EDITORIAL: Minty's Most Anticipated Comic Book & Sci-Fi Movies Of 2015

2014 may have been one of the best years for film in a long while, but how will next year compare? The competition certainly looks very tough. Hit the jump to find out which big sci-fi, fantasy and superhero blockbusters make my most-anticipated list for 2015!

It’s that time of the year again! 2014 produced some pretty great films – while solidifying superhero movies’ status as the ‘top dog’ in Hollywood at the moment. I should point out that my choices might not necessarily be the best 2015 has to offer – just the ones I’m personally looking forward to seeing the most. Are my choices similar to yours? Scroll down to check them out below!

Honourable Mentions

The big exclusion here is George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, which I know many people are very excited for. Rumoured to be one giant chase sequence, it only just misses out. Terminator Genysis also fails to make the cut – simply for chosing to spell Genesis with a ‘Y’ (well... that and possible franchise fatigue). Other nods go to Neil Blomkamp’s Chappie, which had a very emotional first trailer, Pixar's Inside Out, and James Wan’s Furious 7 – which simply looks like unapologetic fun (and sadly features Paul Walker's final onscreen appearance as well).

And last but not least - is it cheating if I sneak this guy in as well? Marvel & Netflix's Daredevil may not be being released in cinemas, but it could end up being the best comic-book adaptation of 2015. With a great cast, talented writers and the freedom of a 13-episode run on Netflix, this show will pave the way for Jessica Jones and the rest of Marvel's small-screen Defenders over the coming years...

10) The Fantastic Four

Director: Josh Trank
Written By: Seth Grahame-Smith, Simon Kinberg, Jeremy Slater; Josh Trank (story)
Cast: Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Reg E. Cathey, Tim Blake Nelson

Why It’s Interesting? Let’s get the most controversial out of the way first, shall we? Regardless of how a lot of people feel about Fox’s mysterious reboot, this is a CBM – and as such, we should all want to see it do well. Trank proved he had a lot of potential when he made Chronicle – which felt like a truly unique take on the superhero genre. Hopefully he’ll deliver more of the same here – ably supported by a talented young cast. Toby Kebbell (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes) looks like the pick of the bunch as Doctor Doom.

9) Mission: Impossible 5

Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Written By: Drew Pearce, Will Staples
Cast: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Alec Baldwin

Why It’s Interesting? Make no mistake, Tom Cruise is in the form of his life at the moment. After kicking this franchise back into gear with 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Cruise has since had a number of excellent sci-fi & action hits that have sneaked under the radar – from Jack Reacher to Oblivion to the excellent Edge Of Tomorrow from earlier this year. Reunite him with frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie and actors Jeremy Renner & Simon Pegg and your definitely on to a winning formula.

8) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

Director: Francis Lawrence
Written By: Danny Strong, Peter Craig
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour-Hoffman, Natalie Dormer, Elizabeth Banks, Jena Malone, Sam Claflin, Donald Sutherland

Why It’s Interesting? The Hunger Games series may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and a few fans were even a little disappointed with this year’s Mockingjay – Part 1. However, so far I've really enjoyed this franchise, which looks to go out with a bang next year. Centring around exciting themes of revolution, the filmmakers have prioritised action and the characters over romance and teenage fluff. Meanwhile, the acting talent on display is magnificent – with special mention to the late, great Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

7) Kingsman: The Secret Service

Director: Matthew Vaughn
Written By: Jane Goldman & Matthew Vaughn
Cast: Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Michael Caine

Why It’s Interesting? Matthew Vaughn has to be one of the most versatile directors working in Hollywood today. Over the last decade, the man has produced four fantastic movies – topping them all with 2011’s excellent X-Men: First Class. While it was a shame to see him depart the sequel, no movie appeared more suited for him than this. Based on the graphic novel by Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons, Vaughn’s next hit-in-the-making blends the tongue-in-cheek tone of old school spy movies with gratuitous violence. What’s not to love?

6) Ant-Man

Director: Edgar Wright Peyton Reed
Written By: Gabriel Ferrari, Andrew Barrer & Adam McKay
Cast: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Judy Greer

Why It’s Interesting? Because it’s a Marvel Studios film! Guardians Of The Galaxy proved that Feige can slap that logo on anything right now and audiences will eat it up. Yes it’s a huge shame that Edgar Wright never got to complete his vision (he had a lot of time to do so, mind you), but in Peyton Reed you’ve got a decent director who seems like a big fan of the source material. It’s also got a great cast (led by Paul Rudd & Michael Douglas), and a plot that potentially leads-in to 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. I (for one) can’t wait!

5) Tomorrowland

Director: Brad Bird
Written By: Damon Lindelof & Brad Bird
Cast: George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn

Why It’s Interesting? Not much is known about Brad Bird’s latest gig – but that hasn’t stopped people from being extremely excited about it. An intriguing first trailer had me convinced this was going to be a hit – while George Clooney’s involvement is always a plus. Claudio Miranda’s history as a cinematographer on Oblivion and Life Of Pi promises some truly breath-taking visuals, while Bird’s name itself should be enough to get you into that theatre. He’s had hit after hit after hit – from The Iron Giant to Ghost Protocol. Somebody give this man a CBM!

4) Jurassic World

Director: Colin Trevorrow
Written By: Derek Connolly & Colin Trevorrow
Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, Judy Greer, Irrfan Khan

Why It’s Interesting? Jurassic Park is still one of my all-time favourite movies, and while the sequels never lived up to the original, something tells me the fourth instalment looks ready to recapture the magic and nostalgia from Spielberg’s classic. Chris Pratt (ya know, Star Lord, legendary outlaw…) heads up an impressive cast, as he swiftly becomes Hollywood’s most in-demand actor. Meanwhile, Colin Trevorrow looks to follow Gareth Edwards from a small indie hit to a big screen blockbuster. Also: it’s got dinosaurs dammit!

3) Spectre

Director: Sam Mendes
Written By: Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, John Logan
Cast: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Monica Bellucci, Andrew Scott, Dave Bautista, Ralph Fiennes, Naomi Harris

Why It’s Interesting? After the disappointment of Quantum Of Solace, Sam Mendes’ Skyfall re-invigorated the Bond franchise once again. Was it the best Bond ever? I’d go have words with the Casino Royale fans about that one, but it was certainly up there. Mendes looks to have filled the void left by Judi Dench and Javier Bardem by bringing in some quality talent – including Andrew Scott (of Sherlock fame), Christoph Waltz and the lovely Léa Seydoux. Meanwhile, Daniel Craig just keeps getting better and better as 007.

2) Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Director: Joss Whedon
Written By: Joss Whedon
Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Andy Serkis, Samuel L. Jackson, James Spader

Why It’s Interesting? James [frick]in Spader. That’s why. Well, that and the fact that it’s the sequel to the most successful superhero movie ever. Marvel have moved from strength to strength in Phase 2, producing some truly great films. The pressure is now on Joss Whedon to top his 2012 mega-hit. A darker tone, more in line with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will likely please the critics, while the aforementioned Spader looks like he could be one of the best CBM villains ever as Ultron. There are no strings on that man.

1) Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Director: JJ Abrams
Written By: Lawrence Kasdan, JJ Abrams
Cast: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Warwick Davis

Why It’s Interesting? So what tops the sequel to the third highest grossing movie of all time? A Star Wars movie of course! The Force Awakens stunned audiences worldwide this month with that fantastic teaser trailer. JJ Abrams looks like the man to kick the franchise back into gear after the lacklustre prequels, having performed similar heroics with 2009’s Star Trek. The old favourites all return - joined by a dynamic young cast, while the legendary John Williams is back too! This has to be the movie to beat for 2015.

Well there you have it! What do you think? Does The Force Awakens deserve to be number 1? Disappointed by the lack of Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2? Let me know in the comments below, and hit the big red thumbs-up if you enjoyed it!

I'm still on the fence about FF. I think Toby Kebbell will make a great Doom and I have no doubt Trank is a talented director, but some of the other aspects of the film seem a bit too off point for me. If they can pull it off, by all means I'll buy the beers myself.

Jurassic World seems promising, I'm certainly looking forward to it. Pratt is one of my favourite actors right now and his stardom seems to only increase with every performance.

Age of Ultron will probably kill me and so will Episode VII. The rest, apart from Spectre because I never got into Bond, I'm certainly looking forward to them.

Great list @Minty! I was actually thinking of doing a write-up for my most anticipated movies for next year, but you pretty much nailed every single one of them haha. Plus, your top 4 practically mirrors my own (though I'd swap The Force Awakens and Age of Ultron, but that's just me =P).

Next year is going to be a delight for moviegoers, no doubt!

Great response guys! Keep 'em comin'!

Cheers @DrunkenNukem, yeah I reckon I should have put Man From U.N.C.L.E. on my honourable mentions actually. And yeah each to their own about The Hunger Games, I get that it's not everyone's favourite series.

@WorstUserNameEver - Thanks bud. Crimson Peak looks pretty great. Anything with Jessica Chastain has my attention!

@NovaCorpsFan - Fair play on Bond, and yeah I'm trying to stay positive despite some of the things I've heard. Hoping the movie can surprise everyone - or at least be half-decent

@SauronsBANE - Cheers man, as always I appreciate your support! Haha I thought the same thing when you made that excellent Top 5 for 2014 - we have too similar tastes! ;) Can't wait for 2015 to start!

@DaveAriKhanlark - Unpopular opinion: I really like Teller. Dude may have a really punchable face but I've found him great in everything he's in so far, so I definitely agree with you on that man.

@REPOMAN - So you don't want it to be a good movie?
Minty
Minty - 12/27/2014, 4:13 PM
@Batmaniac - Cheers man. I'm kinda with you there on Daredevil. That's 13-hours of pure CBM goodness - rather than the 21/2 we'll get from the others.
Minty

Lol, in all seriousness there's no way this top 10 list competes with that monster of a theory ;) Haha cheers anyway Doop!

"Regardless of how a lot of people feel about Fox’s mysterious reboot, this is a CBM – and as such, we should all want to see it do well."

That is one absolutely horribly flawed sentiment.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 12/27/2014, 4:54 PM
@Minty Haha great minds =P

@Torpedo Umm, not really. Anyone who's a true fan of comic book movies should root for the continued success of comic book movies. That doesn't seem too complicated or flawed to me.
Minty

Haha jks ;) Lol yeah I'm lovin the high standard atm. You could definitely add SauronsBANE and Pasties to that list to tbh. Cheers bud, I'm looking forward to seeing some more [frick]in great artwork from you too mate!

@Torpedo - What @SauronsBANE said.

Torpedo
Torpedo - 12/27/2014, 5:17 PM
@SauronsBANE

The most successful movie of the year was Transformers: Age of Extinction. Should we hope Fantastic Four is more like Transformers: Age of Extinction? What if Fantastic Four is a financially successful piece of crap? Fox will consider that "doing well" and produce more of the same.

And if the author simply meant we should all hope the film does well meaning it's a quality film, well, duh, of course. Why wouldn't we want any movie to be good? You can swap the "CBM" for any genre--"We should all hope this crime noir/western/robot apocalypse/romantic comedy/animated squirrel movie does well."
Torpedo
Torpedo - 12/27/2014, 5:20 PM
@SauronsBANE

Also, are you suggesting I'm not a "true fan" of comic book movies than you?
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 12/27/2014, 5:26 PM
@Torpedo Simmer down. I said "true fan" as a point of comparison to the opposite end of the spectrum - those who are just rooting for individual studios to do well. I was never insinuating, nor implying, that you're not a "true fan".

And I think you're reading WAY too much into what Minty was trying to say. Using context clues, I believe he just meant that as shorthand for us rooting for Fantastic Four to be of a high quality. And even if he did mean it to be financially successful, what's the harm in that? Rooting for a movie to make as much money as Transformers doesn't mean we automatically want it to be "more like" it. More money means a higher chance that it'll get a sequel and continue the story. And not coincidentally, higher quality usually leads to more money it makes. Should we not root for that?

xcan - 12/27/2014, 5:38 PM
trying to be polite... but there seems to be a lot of young minds at work tonight.

I'm supposed to cheer or support a CBM SIMPLY because it's a 'cbm'? no sir, fucck that. I ONLY support people or projects which meet my expected level of standards or quality and this movie has admitted that it won't, so I want it to fail... miserably.

let's say on the off chance that this ffino movies does provide a positive financial return to fox. All that does is encourage them to take more liberties with this franchise, and most likely x-men as well, and that is something that I won't support or encourage.

burn, FOX four, burn.

Hopefully there's some sleepers for 2015 though as it seems to be a pretty lame summer after ultron.

Damn you fox and we for your date changes. what an awesome summer it wou live been then...
Torpedo
Torpedo - 12/27/2014, 5:42 PM
@SauronsBANE

Thanks for clarifying the "true fan" comment. Consider me simmered.

I am, indeed, reading too much into it because I'm actively hoping Fantastic Four fails critically and commercially. The FF is my favorite Marvel Comics property and to date FOX has shown me no evidence that they know what to do with the franchise. I don't care if FOX keeps the X-Men and I don't care if Sony continues to screw up Spider-Man; I want the Fantastic Four back at Marvel Studios because I trust Marvel Studios to make the Fantastic Four a) fun, b) recognizable to the characters I personally love from the comics, and c) financially successful.

There are like 30 comic book movies coming out in the next six years. I have no intention of seeing them all, so I really don't need them all to "do well" as Minty says. I would much prefer they "do well... on MY terms."
Minty
Minty - 12/27/2014, 5:49 PM
@Torpedo - Yeah man, I always meant that in the quality sense. If this movie is as crap as Transformers 4 and still does financially well than I will join you in condemning it to hell ;)

@xcan - See above. Im not judging the movie till Ive at least seen the trailer. You cant begrudge me that man, can you?

@cinnamon - Missed your comment first time round. Same to you you krazy kat ;)
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 12/27/2014, 5:54 PM
@Torpedo You got it!

And to be clear, I fully understand why a lot of fans are uneasy about the Fantastic Four reboot. Heck, I don't even have all that much confidence in it. But personally I don't see the harm in rooting for it to surpass expectations and become a critical and financial hit. It's a perfectly harmless mindset, born from being an optimist.

But if it ends up truly eviscerating the characters and doesn't understand what makes the FF so great...well, by all means, root for it to bomb. The Amazing Spider-Man movies missed the point of Spider-Man and have underperformed at the box office so far, and that seems to have forced Sony to reevaluate their plans for the character.

Who knows, maybe the same thing happens with the FF! But at this point, it's much easier and much more pleasant to simply root for the reboot to be great and re-launch the franchise in a great way.
xcan
xcan - 12/27/2014, 6:02 PM
@minty could never have a grudge against your opinion as it's yours so it's cool... even though I may disagree ;-)

my worry is the precedence it sets if it's successful. fortunately marvel has moSt of its characters in house (which isn't perfect, but they have shown a strong desire to maintain most of the core values of the characters), and believe me, if successful, fox and Sony will move forward with watered down ff, spidey and x-men movies with a shoe string budget and characters that are unrecognizable from the source material.

and I sure don't want to see that happen...
Minty
Minty - 12/27/2014, 6:14 PM
@xcan - Absolutely man, I see where your coming from. Id hate for studio execs to get swollen heads if they make a bad film so I can see why youre being cautious. I was a supporter of TASM2 before I saw the film - boy do I regret that now. Hopefully Im not making a similar nistake here!

@Repoman - Alright, lets just agree it was a poorly phrased sentence. Stop being so frickin pedantic. Read the comments to see my opinion on if it is a bad film. If its crap I hppe it bombs - till then why does it hurt to be optimistic?

Folks, I was 20 when Star Wars came out and probably paid to see it 25 times - we didn't have VCRs in the 70s. I loved the first two and liked the third. All in all, I was a Star Wars fanatic. But those godawful sequels soured me on Star Wars. Those of you in my age group probably remember the crushing disappointment and embarrassment, the damage to the Star Wars brand wrought by George's 2nd trilogy. For that reason I have to go AOU over The Force Awakens. I truly care about what happens to the characters in the Avengers....Star Wars? meh, not so much....
