Frank Darabont In Talks To Direct SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN Spinoff

The headline should read: "One of the greatest directors of all-time is in talks to direct the most unanticipated sequel of all-time." A bit long-winded, but completely accurate. According to Deadline, Frank Darabont, is in talks to direct SWATH 2.

Early this month, Deadline reported that three directors: Frank Darabont, Gavin O’Connor and Andy Muschietti, were on Universal's short list to direct Snow White and the Huntsman 2, which is being labelled a spinoff, not a sequel. Apparently Darabont pitch to the studio was a winner as Deadline is reporting he is in negotiations to direct the new film. It is pretty surprising news as Darabont is notoriously picky about which projects he chooses to work on. Darabont is the former showrunner of AMC's The Walking Dead and directed arguably the best film of all time, Shawshank Redemption. He might be a bit rusty, he hasn't directed a film since 2007's The Mist.

The film is said to focus on Chris Hemsworth's character from the first film. There is still no official word about Kristen Stewart's status, though previous reports have claimed that she will not reprise her role as Snow White. Maybe she's not the fairest of them all. Oh snap, I just dropped a fairy tale zing.

The first Snow White and the Huntsman, which was directed by Rupert Sanders, pulled in $400 million at the worldwide box office against a budge of $170M. That's a nice piece of cake, and Universal would like another mouthful.

SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN was directed by Rupert Sanders, from a script written by Evan Daugherty. The cast includes: Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Ray Winstone, and Nick Frost.

Apparently this one will only focus on Chris Hemsworth's character, so I'm definitely interested

Hmmm maybe we'll get the real Thor in this one! I kid, I kid. I definitely can see this improving with Frank Darabont directing it.

Frank Darabont is an amazing director. All his Stephen Kind adaptations were spot on. I'd watch this movie.

I liked the Shawshank Redemption as much as the next person but it is not even close to the "best film of all time"

Finally, Thor will be in a fantasy movie.

S/N: I saw Maleficent earlier today, and all I say to myself was, "Jolie is flying more in this movie than Thor has in 3 movies." WTF, Marvel!

I actually liked the first film. It was a little clunky, but it was a good fantasy/adventure in the vein of the 80's films of the genre.

This move, though. What? This might as well be one of those Disney direct-to-videos starring that super funny character everyone liked.
If it looks maybe, we'll see. It's early yet.

Was on about this in a different thread on the subject: the most appealing thing to me about the first one was having this gritty framework to put distinctly disney-esque fairy tale elements into. The best scene to me was the bit where animals came out and looked on as Snow White approaches the spirit of the forest. Realistic fantasy is stuck way too far up its own ass for me, so that blend was super cool to see.

The movie itself was pretty sleepy, but a sequel could've remedied that. Now it just sounds like it'll be Chris Hemsworth stabbing things, or whatever. And hey! Don't get me wrong! I don't mind watching Chris Hemsworth stabbing things. Or, ahem, doing anything, really. But it's still less immediately intriguing to me than getting another crack at the ambitions of the original.

I really enjoyed the first film but have to agree that it could well have had about 20 minutesof exposition excised and been a far pacier film for it.

I think it's a shame Kristen Stewart won't be back as, having see her in Runaways, I recognise how good an actor she can be, but if the material is lacking and the director can't inspire the performances, then she'd do well to walk away. Personally, I hope she takes on some difficult dramatic roles, as she certainly has the chops for it, but she bears the curse of Bella.

Crappy 1st movie. Even dropping the worst part of it (Stewart) isn't going to make a sequel about a boring character any more interesting, regardless of how awesome Hemsworth is as an actor. His character is just boring.

The first one was [frick]ing awful. Literally fell asleep more than once before it was over. This and Pacific Rim? Is it just Give a Bad Movie a Sequel Day?

If it's just about the Huntsman and Darabont is directing, that means there is a reason to get excited. I will definitely go see this, mainly because it sounds like it could be another great addition to the dark fantasy canon depending on how they spin it.
