Hollywood Studios Unlikely To Bring End To WGA Strike Until Writers Are Faced With Homelessness

The WGA strike is showing no signs of ending, and with actors likely to soon join writers, it's said Hollywood studios will hold out until creatives are left with no other choice than to meet their terms.

SAG-AFTRA will decide whether its members are going on strike later today, meaning actors could soon join the writers refusing to work as part of the ongoing battle between the WGA and Hollywood. As a result, the entire film and television industry could soon grind to a halt.

However, those of you hoping movie studios will rush to give these creatives what they deserve are likely to be as disappointed as those currently on the picket lines. According to Deadline, multiple sources have confirmed they're planning to treat writers with zero mercy as we head into the Fall.

As of now, all signs point to the WGA strike lasting until late October, with the plan being to wear down the Guild members in an effort to make them more agreeable to the terms being laid out by studios.

"The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses," a studio executive tells the trade, with another insider adding it's viewed as "a cruel but necessary evil."

Studios and streamers feel that writers who are struggling financially will force WGA leadership to resume talks and settle matters before Christmas. Money is a key issue, of course, but the WGA's demands about everything from A.I. to the size of writers' rooms on TV shows appear to be a major sticking point as well.

This means we should prepare for some huge delays heading into 2024, especially as the projects which have already paused production - Daredevil: Born Again, The Penguin, and Thunderbolts, for example - are unable to resume work until the strike ends.

Whether it's Marvel Studios, Star Wars, or even the newly launched DC Studios, countless movies and TV shows are going to slip down the release calendar and that's bad news for theaters, streamers, networks and, well, you the fans.

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

@ossie85 - what are the writers asking for? I keep hearing "livable wagees" but what's the actual ask?

@Ryguy88 - not an expert, but I think not being replaced by AI is key

The fact that they’re capable of holding out long enough to outlast the writers just highlights how vast the inequality is. Truly despicable.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 7/12/2023, 6:50 PM
@Madman - the inequality of....massive corporations vs individual people?
Madman
Madman - 7/12/2023, 7:55 PM
@Ryguy88 - A massive oversimplification, but yes. They’ve spent AND lost far greater sums than what’s being asked for—the monopolistic content machines vs the people responsible for the creation of said content.

However, I did just read one writer’s thoughts that this simply a fear tactic to inspire hopelessness and the reality may be that once content begins to slow, shares begin to drop. How valid that is, I couldn’t say—I work in post production, so this won’t hit me til end of year, beginning of next. Just hope it’s over soon, without being a bloodbath.

@Madman - what is being asked for? What rates are writers currently paid vs what are they asking to be paid?

Damn the folks who said writers were being greedy for demanding better pay and treatment.

@comicfan100 - no, they want Hollywood to agree to never use AI as a writing tool. That's what this strike is really about.

@Origame - Its part of it, not all of it.

@Origame - Part of it, and we should fully support it.

@Dingus - Adam Conover, who's basically been acting as the spokesperson for the writers guild in terms of the strike, has said this is at the heart of the matter.

@TheHumanSpider2 - 1) the main part, as I've explained above.

2) no, we shouldn't. Technology advances and it takes jobs from people in the short term. Every industry has this problem. But it's not even a problem because the existence of the technology doesn't take away the actual number of jobs, just one it was designed to replace (it's existence creates new jobs in its place). And it ultimately leads to an easier time for everyone. Hell, most of the time the AI is being used for unimportant dialog so the writers can focus on the main stuff. Isn't that a good thing in general?

@Origame - Yes, we should, AI is not only taking away their jobs, it will eventually take away OURS.
They are killing art, dont you notice how bad and souless any type of fiction made by AI looks and feels?
