Kevin Smith, a renaissance man of sort, is well known among the geek community for being heavily involved with comic books and owning the comic book shop “Secret Stash”. It was only a matter of time that a series would revolve around the Red Bank, New Jersey shop chronicling the everyday lives of the team as they discuss, sell and purchase comic books. Is this the show for comic book geeks by comic book geeks or a lackluster entry that will keep the community under a dim light?

From left to right: Ming Chen, Bryan Johnson, Kevin Smith, Walt Flanagan and Mike Zapcic.

I am happy to say that this show is a definite watch. After the hilarious open discussion of Batman and Dick Grayson’s Robin, I was immediately entertained and hooked. Being the first entry of the series, there may be a few to a couple of gripes that the public may point out.

The cast of Comic Book Men consists of Manager Walt Flanagan, Mike Zapcic, Bryan Johnson and Ming Chen who seems to take a verbal beating from some of the cast, mainly from Bryan. Everyone is a different personality, but deliver the laughs as they rip on each other and discuss comic related bits. The set up is shown as a live video podcast divided into three parts as they discuss characters, rarities, comics and other events that unfold throughout the day, while being reminiscent to Pawn Stars as they barter and purchase collectibles from customers. Being the first entry of the series, instead of a lengthy introduction of the crew we’re immediately thrown into their working days as we find out more about them during the show. It was great to see the amount of passion and zeal displayed, especially from Mike as they came across a rare 6 Billion Dollar Man action figured which he reminisced his fondest memory of watching Steve Austin in action and a kid. The show had some slow moments, but the crew and their customers kept things interesting. There wasn’t a lot of “oh my gosh awesome collectible” present, but surely as the series progress we’ll be treated to see the prized collections from the owners.

My only gripe overall would be the treatment of Ming. No it wasn’t Precious extreme, but he did take a lot of shots. A lot of this was evident during the Garage Sale at the Collingswood Flea Market where Mike, Bryan and Ming were selling memorabilia and other comic book related items (or junk)as a contest to see who can make the most selling. Though some of the things Bryan said were funny, as it kept going it showed him to be a bit of a brute especially when he smashed a plate from Ming’s sale table. It was awesome that another seller stand up for him, but none the less despite the lack of salesmanship from Ming he shouldn’t have been treated like that. He did however, show dedication as he was there early, left last and ultimately ended up selling more than Mike and Bryan to earn a “good job” from the guys and a prize winning hotdog. Am I expecting a change of attitude towards Ming? No, but it would be nice to ease off of him a little bit.

Despite the show’s pacing, lack of standout collectibles and meanness displayed, this was a solid debut from Kevin Smith and I’m looking forward to what’s next in store. Comic Book Men is a one hour, six-part series airing on Sundays at 10pm. What moment stood out to you the most? What would you have liked to see different? What prize possession would you take to Secret Stash? Discuss and share your thoughts below. This is Mareado and thank you for having salsa with me.

Bryan: Did you ever find out why Batman's voice sound like that? (Bale's Batman)

Mike: He's a man in a costume and he uses that voice for intimidation.

Bryan: I can see how that can be scary.

Mike: If I heard that voice, I'd make sure he'd get what he wants...you should use that voice around your girlfriend.

Bryan: That sounds like a great idea! "We can go to second base." *Bale's Batman voice*"I was thinking third."

These guys are great. I live in New Jersey and this is the comic book store that I shop at. I am so happy with this show

This show is exactly what I thought it would be, an homage to Kevin Smith's huge ego. The guy was once a talented writer and his early stuff was excellent. I even liked Jersey Girl, but I can't watch the man speak anymore. He always comes off throwing a fanboy tantrum, then drifting into a story from his past that has no relevance to the topic he's speaking about. To take a quote from Skin Deep, "Don't say it dear boy, write it!"

In more direct respect to Comic Book Men. It just wasn't that interesting.

Great stuff dude, I'll check thsi out when I get the chance..even though Smith has officially become one of the most annoying human beings walking to Earth to me over the past couple of years.

Can't get enough of theses guys. Whether its SModcast, TESD or I Sell Comics! I always thought they should have their own show. Now they need to get Brian Quinn, Sunday Jeff and Jason Mewes to guest star!

@ Mugwamp - In what way was Kevin Smith trying to flaunt his ego? He always comes of very humble and constantly mocks both himself and his work. Your comment makes zero sense.

I agree with u Mare, poor Ming, they were a lil too rough on the guy. That's the only thing that bothered me otherwise I thought the show was great.

It does shine a light on our community and the staffs banter is friggn hilarious. They had me rolling.

I'm not sure why so many people dislike smith. I was never a huge fan of his to begin with so I never really followed his career. So as a viewer with little info on smith, I didn't get the sense of Smith's ego that i've seen people speak of. it's his store bla blah blah but i felt the show focused on the staff and somewhat on the collectibles. They need to start discussing more about comics and heroes tho and lay off of ming :(

I can't say why anyone else is annoyed by Smith, only why I am. I used to actually kinda look up to the guy..to get Clerks made on such a shoestring, clever dialog etc. The movie was very flawed but shone through as a piece of guerrilla style film making. Then he started to make a few more movies..budgets started getting bigger, and it became apparent that the reason Clerks was so flawed wasn't the budget or limitations, it's that he';s just not a very good film maker. His movies have a few funny scenes, and some bright spots..but overall he just never grew the [frick] up and honed his craft, he just kept throwing the same shit at the wall and when some of it stuck his fans called them great movies. Then with the whole Cop Out/critics thing he just showed what a hypocrite and a child he ultimately was. I still think he's clever and occasionally funny, but he annoys me more than he entertains me.

it was a good episode for a first episode. pace was a little off I thought. I would've like slightly longer pod conversations and longer segments inside/outside the store.

Plus, they got the caption under the photo wrong though. I believe its From left to right: Ming Chen, Bryan Johnson, Kevin Smith, Mike Zapcic and Walt Flanagan.

I really enjoyed the show - and am pleased that AMC Canada ran it and Walking Dead on the same night as the US (which is a rarity for us)

I had to laugh at the people coming in and WAY over-value-ing their stuff. $800 for lobby cards? $500 for a Chucky doll? Sentimental value does not equal dollars. A good friend of mine owns the Comic Book Shoppe here in town so I know the types of people he gets coming in. Waiting to see "them" portrayed on the show, too. Overall, I thought it was pretty ok.

Kevin Smith reminds me of Zaphod Beeblebrox... "If there's anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now."

That said, he worked his ass off to get to where he is, and I feel his glory hogging is balanced with his self deprecation. Over all, there were lots of good laughs, good natured ribbing, and other facts that may not be well known to everyone. Yeah, I'm a fan, and enjoyed all of his "Evening With" shows, as well as his movies.

@ChubbyDeadpool I worked in a Spencer's Gifts for years and we couldn't GIVE away any of those cheaply made Chuckie dolls. What's MORE unbelievable than the fact she wanted $500 for it was the fact that I he was gonna give her $100 for one!

I watched this and it was an alright show in the vein of Pawn Stars. But Bryan Johnson -- the fat, ugly, hairy troll of a man is hard to watch. He is a large man on the outside, but such a tiny, pathetic man inside - he is so clearly jealous of never attracting women and other insecurities I'm sure, like wondering if he's funny enough or smart enough to make up for his ugliness - but to be such a blatant asshole as to smash Ming's plates at the Flea Market really pissed me off. It's a turn-off and I doubt I'll be tuning in to this show again - that sort of pathetic attitude is hard to watch when it isn't vilified and frankly, not even funny. To sum up this show: overweight, pathetic men taking their insecurities out on skinnier, younger, shy men.

I grew up there in Collingswood NJ and left right after graduating HS. I heard it has changed a bit since then (early 90's). But, I have to say, I fell off of my chair laughing at the positive characterization Smith lent to the people of Collingswood and their flea market. Oh New Jersians and their flea markets! Gotta miss them!

This show was lame....the only funny part was when they were talking like "batman".

The manager remonds me of the sweaty guy from Ocean's 11.

I love how the reviewer says "Despite the show’s pacing, lack of standout collectibles and meanness displayed..." and still says this is a must watch. These things are what is essential to make this show work. Without the things listed this is possibally the most worthless show on TV.
If all it takes is Kevin Smiths fat ass and some variation of "comics" in the titles to get folk (specifically this forum) to watch then not wonder Geroge Lucas can still make hundreds of millions per Star Wars movie...after the 5th or 6th screening.
