OPINIONS: Should Marvel Comics Do A Relaunch Like DC Comics'??

In the third week of DC Comics' New-52 relaunch, the new #1's are still selling phenominally!! When Justice League #1 hit stands at midnight on August 31st, it became the Most Sold Comic of 2011 with over 200,000 copies sold nationwide. Comic shops everywhere ordered dozens upon dozens, and still could not keep stock. Comic shop owners with enough foresight to do an advanced-reorder were fortunate enough to recieve their second-printings today for the high-demand book, which is STILL selling out amongst stores everywhere.

Last week, we saw the release of the new #1's for Action Comics, Detective Comics, Green Arrow, Justice League International, Animal Man, Batgirl, Batwing, Hawk and Dove, Men of War, O.M.A.C., Static Shock, Stormwatch, and Swampthing. These books, too, sold out in mere hours on the day of their release on September 7th, with countless stores doing advanced-reorders for several of these books as well to meet the high demand that fans have created for the issues.

Now in the third week, readers were given the new #1's for Batman and Robin, Batwoman, Deathstroke, Demon Knights, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Green Lantern, Grifter, Legion Lost, Mister Terrific, Red Lanterns, Resurrection Man, Suicide Squad, and Superboy. The two local comic shops near me, were sold out of 10 of the 13 issues by 4:30 this afternoon, and they ordered 60 copies of each book.

While speaking with the owner of my local comic shop, I brought up how successful this relaunch has been for DC Comics. The owner stated plainly, "DC is going to crush Marvel this month in book sales. I sell out of these new books in 5 hours or less." I then asked him if he thought that Marvel would recognize DC's success and attempt a relaunch of their own? "It's hard to say. It will be interesting to see how many of these titles I sell out of when they get to issues 4, 5, and 6. But I don't know if Marvel will wait that long to see how the books sell. They may just see the instant success and follow suit."

SO, long story short, I pose the same question to you guys, the true-blue comic book fans of the world: Should Marvel Comics initiate an entire Universe relaunch like DC Comics has done OR is Marvel good enough the way it is and stick to their current numbering and storylines?

Personally, as a person who really only got into reading Marvel in the last two years since I heard about the releases of the Thor and Captain America movies, I think a relaunch of the Marvel universe could be great. It really does create an easy launching off point for new and old readers alike.

given thee fact that DC's was huge success, and the fact that Marvel has turned out something new and exciting in a while, i would have to say yes, merge 616 with ultimate, take good parts of ultimate and good parts of 616 and combine the two

such as leave peter as spiderman, but stick with the ultimate origin, things like that, and to ease into something like this

MARVEL: 616 vs ULTIMATE

But, we should also remember the rule that I like to call "The Rule of Superman #75". When Superman #75 hit stands in 1993, and Superman died in the issue, there were over 2 million printings of that issue. People were buying that issue in case loads, thinking that in a few short years, they could sell the book and making thousands of dollars off the issue. People forgot that what makes an issue valuable is NOT the content of the book, but the rarity of it.

We may be seeing something similar here. People everywhere have been hearing about all these brand new #1 issues and thinking to themselves that if they buy all these issues, that in 40 years, these issues will be worth thousands of dollars. So, perhaps Marvel should wait until Decemeber or January to see if these books are still selling as well at issue #6 as they were at issue #1.

@manymade1 I gotta ask why?

I mean, I've been reading DC Comics for 18 years and, I will admit, I was VERY much against the relaunch at first. But when I saw the new character designs and then when I actually read the issues, I gotta say it's one of the best things I've seen DC do. It's really some of the very best I've seen from DC. Plus, they haven't really changed anything about the characters and all the past storylines are still canon. It's basically just a renumbering to make people feel like they're starting at the beginning.

the only thing left that I can say is a quote that Jim Lee said at the Midnight Madness event, "Think of a television series: You're not going to jump into the series at season 7. No, you're going want to start back at season 1 do get a full understanding of what it is you're watching." The relaunch DOES NOT effect long-time readers in any way other than that they changed the costumes. All past storylines are still existant and referenced. The relaunch was to spur longtime readers into trying new books and characters by creating a HUGE, Universe spanning event and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, to create an easy launching off point for new readers!

Whether we want to admit it or not, comic books have been a dying medium for years. While Marvel is the top selling publisher, the fact still remains that the medium is starving for new readers. Renumbering all the titles back to #1 creates an easy opportunity for readers, new AND old!

one of the many things Marvel has been able to maintain within their respective 616 universe is keep their continuity.

sure there have been retcons, but they have all managed to work within 616 without destabilizing the quality of the writers who came before.

Marvel already has an Ultimate Universe which is a reboot of sorts.
why would they want to redo all of the hard work that they have put into creating such a complex and unique universe????

@kryptoman i doubt thats the only reason its selling, people learned their lesson, also considering that multiple books are selling quite alot and most books are getting favorable reviews, im saying it is because of new content, if any book is selling becuase of people thinking its rare, it would be justice league, and that is a quality book, so im guessing it will keep selling, probably drop from being sold out, but will sell at a high pace

This is ridiculous! They reboot all the time with and without renumbering. Remember "Brand New Day?" The storyline wherein Peter reveals his identity was dumb enough. Then they had to erase that, end the marriage, and wipe everyone's memory again.

The point is they will do it in one form or another as DC will...and then one or both will retcon those stories/ideas.

NO.

I have been following the "Uncanny X-Force" and the story is enthralling, the artwork is dark and scary. Superb in every way, if they rebooted it would ruin a great story, im not gonna give anything away, but AOA ain't quite finished...

No, Marvel doesn't need to. They do plenty of alternate universe stuff to bring in new readers already. Marvel has never needed to wipe out 616 and start over from scratch. They'll do some retcons and other weird stuff to keep their continuity in tacked enough so they can do some big event type stuff. Continuity has been the Marvel way for a while now. DC has always had a problem keeping continuity stable which resulted in their addiction to complete reboots.
