Avatar and The Hurt Locker lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each, including Best Picture. James Cameron will also go head-to-head with his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, who made The Hurt Locker, in the Best Director category.

The star of Avatar, Sam Worthington, didnt make it into the Best Actor category losing out to The Hurt Locker star (and rumoured Hawkeye) Jeremy Renner.

Really? Avatar for Best Picture?
There is no way Avatar should beat Hurt Locker in that category...

@state it shouldn't but it will, unfortunatly

Avatar should not be a Best Picture contender, Hurt Locker should win it flat out and I am sorry but from where I'm standing I thought Inglorious Bastards was Tarantino's worst outing yet. I can understand some nods... but 8!?!?

I didn't think either Hurt Locker or Avatar should get best picture. They were good movies but I wouldn't say they were the best movies of '09. I liked IBastards better than both of those.

Esp Hurt Locker, it had a silly ending in my opinion. Saving all the character development for the main character until the end of the movie is weird.

bropous-- You said milquetoast, lol!

Avatar will win everyone. Give it up, Hurt Locker and all the other films have already lost.

I don't think Tarantino should get best director. In fact his Tarantino-isms kept it from being a real masterpiece.

Up, is should get best picture and director, imo.

hurt locker all the way. avatar was disgustingly overrated. yes its a good movie, but its far from original. it does not deserve to be the number one movie of all time.

Hurt Locker should win but Avatar will sadly, it really doesn't deserve it but there ya go...

D9 was not very good imo. What's with all this Hurt Locker love? It was ok at best. I'm not a military guy but I've seen much better contemporary war films. Hell, I liked Black Hawk Down and Jarhead better than Hurt Locker.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 2/2/2010, 8:52 AM
The Hurt Locker most definitely deserves to win best picture and director whilst Inglorious Basterds is probably the least deserving IMO - I just dont think it was anything special...in fact it was probably up there with X-Men Origins: Wolverine as one of my biggest disappointments of last year as I really expected it to be better! Avatar was great and deserves the nominations but not the wins! :)

It would have been a travestshamockery if Worthington would have been nominated for Best Actor. He couldn't hold the cup that Renner pees in as far as comparing the two acting roles.

The over-hype of Avatar will continue and the sales will continue to increase because of it. I'm with Bropus...the Academy is messed up. I don't pay any attention to the Oscars anymore.

I think Avatar for Best director, I still have to see hurtlocker yet, and the bastards so I have no opinion on those.

I don't get why you guys are bitching about Avatar being nominated. You all wne tto see it, and if you didn;t you can't copmlain because you haven't seen it. So what if it got nominated? They don't judge these things based on plot alone. They judge it on the overall work and performances of the cast crew, teh quality of work that was put into it. They also view these films based on the type of work, in this case Avatar's ground breaking graphics.

I mean 'Citizen Kane' is considered by many to be the greatest film ever made, but it is not called that for its plot, no the plot is teh weakest point of the film. It is considered the greatest because of teh groundbreaking visuals used, teh amazing performances by the cast and crew, Welles' amazing work as director and star of the picture.

I don't think half of these should have been nominated, Up shouldn't have, Inglorious Basterds was one of Tarrentino's worst films yet. Precious is good, but overrated, the only thing outstanding about it is
Gabourey Sidibe's amazing performance. District 9 surprised the Hell out of me by securing a nomination, i don't know what to say about that one.

Two films that should have been nominated were Invictus, and Crazy Hearts. They are far better films than half those nominated. But out of teh nominees

10-1 that half teh people complaining about Avatar being nominated would complain if it WASN'T nominated! The same thing would have happened if the Dark Knight was nominated last year! Yes it was good, but TDk was nowhere near Oscar worthy.

HAWK out

Hurt Locker wasn't that great of a movie, it was overhyped as well. Hurt Locker was good, but it was by far the best this year, I would be happy with it over Basterds, but it was hardly the best.

I love most of the movies nominated. I would love to see D9 win but it won't. Its also a travesty that Sharlto Copley didn't get nominated for best actor. Avatar could win..but my money's on either THe Hurt Locker or Basterds. Best actor needs to be Jeff Bridges. Out of the actresses the only performance i've seen is Gabourey Sidibe's in Precious and that was great. Can't believe Sandra Bullock is even invited to the [frick]ing Oscars, what a hack. Out of the directors nominated I hope it goes to Cameron. None of the other achieved as much as he did with their movies.

@rormachine I heard the girl from Precious did a complete 180 for the role, they say that the character that she played is the total oppisite from who she really is, I think thats awsome... I kinda hope she wins.

"The Hurt Locker" will win best picture and it will also win more acadamies. I will guarantee that.

"The Hurt Locker" was a much much better movie than Avatar. It reflects on the past decade and the current overall state of the world, and it means more to more people than "Avatar," I think.

Avatar will win the Oscar for best picture. No matter how much I or anyone else doesn't want it to happen. It will happen.

That being said, I'm actually surprised that D9 is nominated for best picture. It's my personal favorite movie of 2009, but I definitely did not expect those assholes at the academy to nominate it. Intriguing.

The Hurt locker SHOULD win best picture of the year, but alas, it will not happen.

Inglorious Basterds was cool, but I definitely don't see it as a best picture winner at all.

And I love Star Trek, but there was no way in hell that it was gonna be nominated for best picture.

Fine list nonetheless.
