Oscars 2013: Visual Effects Short List Announced

CBM fans should be glad some of our favorite 2013 movies made the cut. Here is the list of the 10 titles nominated:

1. Elysium

2. Gravity

3. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

4. Iron Man 3

5. The Lone Ranger

6. Oblivion

7. Star Trek Into Darkness

8. Thor: The Dark World

9. Pacific Rim

10. World War Z

We should be exited to see IM3 and TTDW as part of this list, but disappointed that 2 other CMB titles didn't make the cut. As you were already able to tell Man of Steel and The Wolverine did not get nominated. I don't know of anyone who was rooting for The Wolverine, but Man of Steel, in spite of its lukewarm critical reception, I think everyone could agree it featured some groundbreaking visuals. What do you think? Is it unfair for the Academy to overlook these CBMs? Do you agree with the list? Do you have a better list? Who do you think should win? Leave your opinion down bellow.

Down to Gravity or the Hobbit, the CBMs don't stand a chance

These are the 2013 Oscars. Not the 2014 Oscars. It doesn't go by year of presentation, it goes by the year in which the films were released.

Probably the Hobbit part duo could be the winner here

Thor 2 and Elysium are also on my radar.

Academy has a thing for movies that were critically well received.

MOS and Pacific Rim divided the audience.
Thor 2 is definitely not an Academy thing,
I think Gravity will win because they will want to honour this movie somehow. It won't be nominated in any major category for sure. Visual Effects, montage, sound ... Gravity could be a winner here.

Gravity will win no matter how good the CGI of the other movies are. It's Life of Pi all over again.

How the [frick] did WWZ get a nomination! This just proves the academy has lost the last of it's meagre reputation.

I remember the year I saw that Alex Ross Oscars poster. That was awesome. Now, this year, The Dark Knight Returns has had a small theatrical run, so that means it could actually stand a chance at being nominated for Best Animated Feature, right? I mean, what other animated features have we had? The Croods was good. Despicabe Me 2 and Cars 2, not so much.
It would be so awesome if The Dark Knight Returns was nominated. Bruce Timm picking up the Oscar, as producer? That would be awesome, indeed.

Frozen will win the best animated feasture I think. Most of critics liked it.

Gravity will be the winner. Pacific Rim is a strong contender too, but I think Cuaron's film has the edge.

The fact that Man of Steel wasn't nominated is really unexpected.

"Visual Effects" means a lot of special effects, not only CGI, it means also certain stunts (for example the barrel scene in The Hobbit:DOS) and the quality of the realization of them. Man Of Steel didn't have a lot of special effects, nor it needed some kind of particular work for those, the MoS effects needed the same crafting ability that was used in a lot of other movies.
Think to Gravity, or Star Trek, or Pacific Rim, those movies are completely made with CGI/special effects, so it's a no-brainer that they made it into the list. i don't even want to talk about The Hobbit, because beside all the (fantastic!) CGI, it has the master job from WETA... And for me it is the most likely winner..

Gravity was the flawless work of a true cinematic master; but having not seen Elysium, I must still expect the follow-up to District 9 to be similarly masterful. World War Z- from what I saw of the trailers- will never win. Thor 2 was cool and fun, but flying effects and the rock giant didn't always sell me. Man Of Steel for similar reasons- perhaps the most crucial aspect of a Superman film- could never come against the likes of Gravity or Elysium- or even Oblivion, though I only enjoyed the first maybe 3 quarters of that film till it got REAL typical and uninventive in the final act while its effects were pretty top-notch. Iron Man 3's effects were pretty great but overindulged maybe, till they got boring, if that makes any sense? Gravity's my pick, anyhow.

Elysium, The Lone Ranger and World War Z have nothing special about visual effects.

The transition from actors and digital stunts in Man of Steel is simply wonderful.

I can't understand the academy...
