Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuts tonight on ABC, and I’d like to take a quick moment to be a little reflective. This is a pretty big moment for superhero fiction. Comic Book Movies are in a golden era right now, but aside from Blade: The TV Series, this will mark the most notable spin-off to come from a CBM. (No, I’m not counting Mutant X)

We’ve come a long way. The Adventures of Superman kicked off a history of adaptations (From Lois and Clark to Smallville, Superman has had the most) and usually, superhero TV is reserved for the biggest names. Even The Flash got his own show! But that doesn’t mean lesser-knowns like The Tick or Witchblade can’t get a shot too.

If popular, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could mark a renaissance for heroes on TV again. To be fair, some credit should go to Arrow for being so successful and reigniting audience interest. Vigilante shows are even trickier than the ones that feature superpowers. Just ask Birds of Prey or The Cape. When these shows fall, they fall hard.

Instead of listing the best Superhero TV shows ever, and going over all the usual suspects (Batman ’66, The Incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman), I thought I’d take this time to suggest that fans check out these 4 shows- the best of the more original superhero programs, which despite the Marvel attachment, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to be.

No Ordinary Family
I’ll start with ABC’s last foray into super powered adventures. This was a charming show that was refreshing in that it didn’t take itself as seriously as others in the genre tend to do. Michael Chiklis started as the head of a household that were all mysteriously bestowed with extraordinary abilities. He gets super-strength, Wife Julie Benz is a speedster, and the son and daughter get super intelligence and mind-reading respectively. If you enjoy stories like Fantastic Four or The Incredibles, this is a fun, serialized version of those.

Alphas
Alphas will probably be the most like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. What was neat about this SyFy series was their focus on being relatively grounded with the powers we see. Leading the show was David Stratharin as a doctor who studies human beings he dubs “alphas”, people with abilities that they even try to explain by science. The whole cast is great, but autistic Gary is the highlight, and one of the most unique characters you’ve ever come across. Think of it as a more detective-ish version of X-Men.

Misfits
British import, Misfits is NOT for the faint of heart. If you’ve always wanted something a little edgier, and a little raunchier, this one’s for you. This series follows a band of delinquents who accidentally get zapped in a storm (classic comic book fashion) and find themselves with new powers they either love or hate. You will find a ton of creativity here when it comes to abilities, and another refreshing approach in that these guys never really become superheroes. They do what anyone young people do- abuse the sh!t out of their gifts in their day to day lives!

Heroes
Don’t’ boo! *dodges the tomatoes* Yea, so I have to talk about Heroes. At the very least, season 1, which was a bonafide phenomenon. This was a dark series that was as intriguing as anything on TV produced in ages. Random people from around the world suddenly finding out they have unique gifts. (The cheerleader suicide marketing was genius, btw) At least for one year we followed the discoveries of mind-reading cops, and time-bending office workers, and a shadowy serial killer who’s answer may lie in a drug addict’s artwork. Yes, the show’s quality declined over the years, but there will always be NBC's initial season, that had everyone everywhere buzzing.

What are some of your favorite superhero/Comic Book TV? Should I have counted The Green Hornet or Human Target? Sound off!

I own the first season of Heroes. For me, the show ended when that season ended. Of course, with Netflix, I watched the rest of the series, but that was really out of boredom and slight curiosity. It had so much potential and wasted it.

misfits is great until they start changing the cast, then it just went ridiculous. i don't know, it didn't feel like misfits without nathan for me.

also i'm with Tainted87 about heroes. loved the first season, hated the rest. they should've added kristen bell in the first season though, she was great.

Misfits was great I'd recommend it to anyone and sure they swapped the cast around and eventually all the original cast were gone but it was still good.

The girl that played Kelly was actually put in jail for attacking a taxi driver or something (must have been cast close to type).

Misfits: Started great and was good for two seasons only, spiraled downhill due to cast changes and is now a sad reflection of its former glory. Not a single member of the original cast is in the show now.

Heroes: Had one excellent first season full of promise but then it got too popular to follow its original plan of basing each season on a completely different cast of characters. This meant the kept Sylar alive at the end of the first season instead of killing him and then used every bad cliche from comic books to make season after season of utter crap.

Alphas: was simply great viewing, very much like X-men in its execution but unfortunately not enough viewers so it got untimely cancelled.

The 4400: Not mentioned on this article but ran for 4 great seasons and predated Heroes by a few years. Was utterly fantastic show about people abuducted by presumed aliens over 100 years and all returned in the present time with abilities. Had some amazing effects for its budget and a really cool them tune. Again untimely cancelled before its time but at least the last episode gave some closure depending on perspective.

No Ordinary Family: Another overlooked show by fans of the genre, one that started of pretty good and got better and better as the season went on. Unfortunately it was only given one season and ended on a major cliffhanger but what a spectacular first season, like having PIXAR's The Incredibles in live action. Superstrength, Woloverine claws, superspeed, super-intelligence, telekenisis, Human torch type flying villains, shape-shifting and more in one season alone. Show most deserved of a second season for the babes alone, Katie the lab assistant/comic geek, was drop dead gorgeous.

Katie!!!!! :-D

Alphas was a really great show.
I loved it, it deserves to last longer.

I liked No Ordinary Family, it was sweet and did y take itself to seriously.
As a Brit, I have watched Misfits religiously and loved it. The cast and power changes is what made me start to lose interest.

Birds of Prey will always be one of my favourite TV shows, comic or not. The cast dynamic was great, I loves how they gave Huntress superpowers. It was entertaining, Harley Quinn was awesome and Barbara Gordon was great.

Blade was good...barely had Blade in it but Blades actor was shit.

Misfits is the best of these started with a BANG finished with a whimper.

Alphas was really cool, too bad it didn't last longer.

All of these shows Pilots were better than Shield....Christ I hope that gets better.

Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future! I know it's not a show based on a comicbook but it has all the right elements. Their has been talk for some time now that the creators and writers of Captain Power have been currently working on a new Powers show that will be set in the same continuity. I believe it's going to be called Phoenix Rising. Can't wait for this!

No Ordinary Family had potential, I loved the show but they dragged to many things throughout the show HOPING that everything would unfold in the following Seasons...they literally wiped their arses before even taking the shit.

I agree with others that Misfits is the best of the list. I still enjoy the show despite the cast changes, although it certainly has dropped off in quality from the first season.

The first season of Witchblade was excellent. I've never read the comic, so I don't know how far it deviated from the source material, but I very much liked what they did with the show.

I loved The Greatest American Hero from the 80s. Read a rumor once that Nathan Fillion once thought about redoing. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. Now, where did that instruction book go?

Man I loved Alphas, and Heros was good I like all the seasons except the one when they turned syler into Nathan, so dumb. And Blade was a good show even with sticky fingas crappy acting. Was a huge fan of The Flash and all it's campiness. Why no Green Hornet, Bruce Lee as Kato was boss!

Out of the 4 highlighted above I like No Ordinary Family
the best because it never got bad of coarse it only lasted one season and could have ended up like Misfits and Heroes. But if we just counted season 1 on all of them then Misfits is my fav.

Torchwood is one of the better shows I've seen (It's a Doctor Who spin-off) and it's fairly similar to AoS.

You know what? My favorite is still The Incredible Hulk. Of course, production-wise, you can't compare it to present CGI-crammed shows and movies. However, the story is almost always good, Bill Bixby's performance is amazing. You can't help but love David Banner and pour all your sympathy for him.
