Greetings, friends. Since Thor is being filmed and the Heroic age is nearly here, I decided to catch up on the Asgardian hero. I'm following the most recent storyline written by J. Michael Straczynski, I read the TPB of vol 1 and last night I just finished vol 2, vol 3 will be out later this month. So I'm gonna do a quick review on both vols.
Vol 1- this book was a great way of bringing in a new reader like me into the world of Thor, the story takes place after events where Donald Blake no longer exists, The Ragnarok having occured, Thor banished to a voided relm, and all the people of Asgard placed into human bodies, and takes place pre-secret invasion. The story as I said is great, reintroducing the characters familiar to people who read the stories and people just entering it. The character's are all great personalities, my favorite is still Volstagg(he's not stupid, just naive in the new world). Loki in vol 1 is a great, he/she is still as mishevious and a great villain to the Marvel universe. My favorite moments in this Volume was when he and Stark have their talk and small fight. The character and art design are great. Seeing Donald Blake as more younger man is a cool thing to do, considering he seems older in the early years. I'm loving the series so far I give vol 1 a 9/10, great introduction, good art style, characters given a nice rebrith, and the story is a great setup for more.
Vol 2- this volume takes volume 1 and takes it one step beyond. This volume deals with essentially Thors family. This volume also takes place during the Dark Reign(we see osborn and his avengers). The early chapters deal with him and his father coming to terms with the events of Ragnarok and everyone's rebirth except Odin's. The rest of the chapters deal with Balder and Loki interacting with one another and discovering hidden revalations that alter Asgard greatly. Lokis still up to her/his tricks. The other Asgardians are sorta played down in this volume but there were funny scenes with Volstagg. The last chapters have great battle scenes and make it feel cinematic. The ending of it was bitter sweet but it does add more to the story and character of Thor. This was a much better half, the story extended greatly, the reveals are great, the book was much more action based. My favorite moment besides the end was in the middle where he and Captain America talk(the news segments prove how messed up the world is), the characters are drawn really well, the world of thor keeps expanding greatly.
As soon vol 3 comes out I will be reading that also, after that I will jump into the single issues of thor. Now I can be in the moments of Siege much better and not know whats up with Asgard anymore. Til next time, BlackAirs out!
