THE BOYS Television Series Headed To Premium Cable TV

THE BOYS Television Series Headed To Premium Cable TV

After teaming to bring Preacher to AMC, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will bring another Garth Ennis comic book to TV. Cinemax has greenlit development on a live-action adaptation of The Boys.

After many years of languishing in development hell, a live-action version of The Boys just gained some serious traction. However, unlike previous attempts, the project is headed to television, not the cinema. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Neal Moritz just successfully shepherded Ennis' Preacher comic series at AMC and they'll look to do the same with The Boys. However, where Preacher will air on basic cable, The Boys will air on subscription TV, meaning there'll be looser requirements from the  FCC.

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke will also serve as an executive producer.

Written by Ennis and illustrated by Darick Robertson, The Boys follows an eclectic team of CIA contractors named Billy Butcher, Mother's Milk, 'Wee' Hughie, The Frenchman and The Female or more informally, "the Boys".  In a world where superheroes exist and are very often revealed to be deranged and psychotic, Butcher and his team are tasked with keeping the superhero community in line, sometimes with lethal force.

Interestingly enough, Cinemax recently picked up Robert Kirkman's Outcast to series, possibly indicating that the premium cable network will become a leader of adult comic book adaptations.

LOOOOOOOVE THIS COMIC ! I am loving Ennis getting his work on the silver screen. He's so underrated. He's a legend imo. This is great.

This is great for indie comics becoming live action adaptations. The smaller non superhero comics.

It's probably better on this medium but it's a shame in that I feel like Adam McKay just got enough juice to get a movie green lit. Especially in a post Deadpool world.

so ... if Preacher TV series ends up being a hit and The Boys ends up being a hit ... can i get Ghostrider miniseries as well ?

GoogleWasMyIdea - 4/6/2016, 2:17 PM
@jerryblake - No, because that's a Marvel property, and they'll probably be saving that for the movies. Also, who WOULDN'T wanna see an actual GOOD Ghost Rider movie? Preferably with a connection to the Sorcerer Supreme?

@GoogleWasMyIdea - Ghost Rider is a prime candidate for a netflix series. I don't think they'd want to risk another movie. The only problem being the budget required. I don't know that they'll ever dust off Ghost Rider.

@Earth2SpecialKa - They HAVE to. I mean, the effects for Daredevil and Jessica Jones, while they're good shows, are pretty damn bad. Ghost Rider just can't work to his full effect on a T.V show.

@GoogleWasMyIdea - I wouldn't say the effects are bad at all for those shows. They're really non existent. There really won't be any indication until Iron Fist comes out how they would do anything like that.

Honestly, Ghost Rider probably isn't going anywhere in live action anytime soon.

@Earth2SpecialKa - The wire-work in both series is cringe-worthy. Like, laughably bad. Ghost Rider pretty much HAS to be in live action, or just not exist at all. How can you make this on a TV budget?

Earth2SpecialKa - 4/7/2016, 4:06 PM
@GoogleWasMyIdea - like i said, he's probably not going anywhere except the pages of a comic book.

@Earth2SpecialKa - your best hope, in my estimation, would be if they rebooted or continued the Blade series. I could see them doing a Marvel Knights kind of thing. Getting Blade and Ghost Rider and maybe the Howling Commandos (the monster ones not the ww2) together. Thing is, all of that fits right into the Netflix stuff. I don't see Disney/Marvel going that dark on film. So, you can either hope for a really excellent portrayal of GR, with middling to poor special effects, or boot up that sweet, sweet Nicholas Cage saga. (sarcasm, obviously.)

I just hope it's faithful to the damn comic... unlike Wanted.

@ICStoopedPeople - that film was heartbreaking from the moment they said Angelina Jolie and called them heroes. I have never been so completely outraged at a film adaptation.

Probably best that it might land on a channel with fewer guidelines. I'm not sure they could handle this on AMC. Kripke as EP is interesting.

"The Boys will air on subscription TV, meaning there'll be looser requirements from the FCC."

The FCC doesn't actually control cable channels. They only enforce their rules on broadcast. So AMC can do or say whatever they want. Like how FX dropped an F bomb on their OJ show uncensored. It's just that the farther you push into R rated territory, the more likely you are to lose ad revenue.
