Top 5 CBM Directors

Top 5 CBM Directors

My top five picks of the best CBM directors. The criteria for this list is that the director must have directed a CBM, the CBM must be good or noteworthy, and work on the film must have been finished. This means that credit for works such as Guardians of the galaxy, Noah, or Ender's Game are disqualified. This said, hit the jump to find out my Top 5 CBM Directors.

5. Zack Snyder

For the longest time I considered not putting him on the list at all because of his reputation for Sucker Punch and divided reception on MoS. I thought that instead I should put David Fincher, but the only true CBM he directed was Alien 3. But it isn’t like Zack Snyder doesn’t have credibility at all. He did direct Watchmen and 300 and that is exactly why he is on this list.

4. Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright commands this position for his work on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, with its action, comedy, romance and heart, which leaves many a fan desperately awaiting his upcoming work on Marvel’s phase 3 film Antman.

3. Matthew Vaughn

For this position, look no further than Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class. Kick-Ass would have been enough to cemented Vaughn on my list, but extra merit goes to his work on reviving, against seemingly all odds, a franchise thought almost to be beyond saving: X-Men. Though it did come with its own set of problems, they are almost nothing compared to the epic story of First Class. Matthew Vaughn not only delivered on a rushed schedule, worrying reshoots, and nearly insurmountable pressure from both the studio and fans alike.

2. Richard Donner

Before Superman, super heroes were looked at as being nerd material, and while it was still looked at that way after Superman’s release, it was a concept which Donner had begun the downfall of, and started in mainstreaming, for better or worse. His work on Superman and Superman 2 are considered not only to be classics, but as essential for watching as the likes of Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz.

1. Christopher Nolan

I think we all knew he was going to be on this list somewhere. His work on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight is unparalleled. This man has single handedly revolutionized the super hero genre, with his only black mark being The Dark Knight Rises. This being said, The Dark Knight Rises was never a bad idea, just one I consider to be half baked as far as writing goes. But even this film has its fans, and when your worst film is still liked by many, you know you have a master director.

Honorable mentions go to Darren Aronofsky, Joss Whedon, Joe Johnston, Jon Favreau, Guillermo Del Toro, Tim Burton, Josh Trank, Sam Raimi (Whom I will not forgive for the god awful Oz), Joseph Kosinski and Niell Blomkamp.

Aronofsky released The Fountain as a Vertigo graphic novel over a year before he released the film. Does that not count? Otherwise they're all realy great choices.
Some you may or may nt have have overlooked:
Frank Bakshi (Fritz the Cat)
Terry Zwigoff (Ghost World)
Alex Proyas (The Crow)
The Hughes Bros. (From Hell)
Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)
David Cronenberg (A History of Violence)
Sam Mendes (The Road to Perdition)
Robert Rodriguez/ Quentin Tarantino (Sin City)
Wes Craven (Swamp Thing)
Sam Raimi (Spider-Man)
Bryan Singer (X-Men)
Joss Whedon (The Avengers)
Kenneth Branagh (Thor)
Tim Burton (Batman)
Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy)

All class acts.

Can't wait, MrCritic.
That Fountain GN is a technicality, though, as the GN was based on an early draft of the script. But it was still a GN first, so it does kinda count as a cbm. And a DC one at that. Whoda thunk it, right?

I feel Donner is overrated, but Joss Whedon needs to make Avengers AU as good, if not better, than the first to become one of the best CBM directors. He's only made one!

Chris Nolan is over-rated. He's still a great director don't get me wrong, but he doesn't deserve to be number 1.

"This man has single handedly revolutionized the super hero genre, with his only black mark being The Dark Knight Rises."

Are you aware that the movie has an 8.6 on IMDb and an 87% rating on RT? It's also one of the only 4 comic book movies to ever get an average rating of 8 or higher on RT (the others being TDK, SM2, and TA). It's also one of only 4 comic book movies to make the AFI's year-end top 10 list (the others being SM2, Iron Man, and TDK). And it's one of only 4 comic book movies to make a billion dollars at the BO. I don't get how it's a black mark? It's universally rated higher than Batman Begins by every measure available. Or do you also consider Begins a black mark? Unless you were just letting your own contrarian opinion be known. As in, it's just a black mark in your eyes and not in the overall scheme of things.

I think Jon Favreau should be on this list even before Joss Whedon is. I think Iron Man is still Marvel's best movie.
