UPDATED: MGM Planning To Reboot Five Films

MGM is reportedly planning reboots for five films, 'Robocop', 'Idolmaker', 'Mr. Mom', 'Poltergeist', and 'Hercules'...

Variety is reporting that MGM will soon be getting the ball rolling on 5 planned reboots which will include Mr. Mom and The Idolmaker, the reboots of RoboCop and Poltergeist, and a Hercules movie.

Some of you will remember that Darren Aronofsky was originally set to direct a RoboCop movie in the past. To date there has been 3 'RoboCop' films.

In 1983 we say Michael Keaton in the title role in 'Mr. Mom', which was directed by Stan Dragoti.

The original The Idolmaker was directed by Taylor Hackford and starred Ray Sharkey.

Poltergeist was originally released in 1982 and was followed by 2 sequels.

The Hercules film has been in development hell at Spyglass for quite some time. Peter Berg is rumored to be producing.

According to the trade, the "story centers on the mythical figure, having turned his back on the gods, becoming a mercenary and training a ruthless army."

UPDATE: MGM reps have informed us that they only have three "official" films on the slate for 2012. Here is what they said...

I cannot comment on the record, but wanted to be sure that you had accurate information about MGM’s current film slate. Contrary to what was reported in Variety, MGM has NO films on their slate other than the previously announced HOBBITs, currently in production in New Zealand; the upcoming BOND 23, currently in pre-produciton; and yesterday’s announcement of the new HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS, a co-financing deal with Paramount. All of these films are slated for release in 2012.

Sorry but MGM has lost their marbles.. Classics like RoboCop and Poltergeist don't need to be remade.

95% of all scary movies are all the same generic effects and storytelling. If you've seen The Ring you've seen all the scary movies that have come out since then (with exception to movies like Paranormal, never saw it, but it seemed different) I would hate for The Poltergeist to fall into such a now bland genre. And based on what I've seen from the RoboCop concepts, nope. No, and no.

WTF. Hercules as a mercenary? This is not the Hercules I know. He may not like the gods but a mercenary he is not. And what army are they talking about? I don't know of any army trained by Hercules. There are so many good stories about him. Why not make something about his 12 labors? You have at least a trilogy right there. He is such a good character. Why waste him with such stories?

MGM is no more in the course since few years, I don't understand why the company isn't bought already by another one. By Fox maybe, they like reboots..

I would love to see a new Robocop movie, keep it R and gritty.

Poltergeist however, definitely doesn't need a remake, if anything touch up the special effects (not replace) and re-release on BluRay.

I wouldn't mind a fourth Robocop movie, but a reboot is completely unnecessary! The first 2 were fantastic!

F**king hollywood at it again! I quote the great Edward Van Halen "the record companies feel if you remake a proven hit you're halfway there, I'd rather bomb with my own music than make it with someone else's" That is the logic behind integrity and being original, as for hollywood money is god and all shall worship. The day they decide to remake Star Wars or Godfather is the day I go hardcore postal on these c**ts!!!!!!!!

ROBOCOP, THE CROW need to be left alone!

LOL

Hell no, leave those films to rest. Let them be the film classics they are without the need for a reboot/remake.

As for Robocop, Peter Weller WAS and ALWAYS will be the best Robocop out there (no disrespect to Richard Eden on his take of the tv series).

PS. LOVE the blood-red vibe going on in this topic.

Robocop would be great rebooted. The old one is a classic but imagine what you do with him in todays CGI infested cinimatics. If not a reboot, do an continum with him getting a serious ass whooping at the start of the movie and then getting a complete overhaul/upgrade to badaz Robo 5 O.

This would be seriously bad if it was true? Oh wait it is true, is Hollywood this incompanent and this stupid, that they can't think if there own damn ideas? I mean seriously how heard is IT, to come up with a new chracter?

Its not hard, but appparently it is hard for them! Becasue they must be smoking alot, if this is going to happen.
