Will Ryan Reynolds Jump Ship From Green Lantern For Deadpool Now?

With Green Lantern failing in the box office, is there a chance Reynolds jumps ship to Marvel?

With a budget that was reportedly over $300 million, including marketing, Warner Bros. and DC's "Green Lantern" seems to be a flop after only recording $89 million domestically going into the Fourth of July weekend.

Warner Bros. and DC can't seem to catch a break with any of their characters, not named Batman, on the big screen.

This leaves me to believe that "Green Lantern" star Ryan Reynolds may pull out of any future GL films, due to the poor reception and performance of the film in theaters. Especially since a sequel is now in question.

So what's next for Reynolds?

The obvious choice is to bounce back over to the Marvel universe and continue his on-screen role as Deadpool, the "Merc with the Mouth."

If you're like me, then you were disappointed with how Deadpool was written in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." When Reynolds was Wade Wilson, at the start of the film, I had no issues—but what transpired in the last half of the film really got to me.

Regardless, after the film was released there were rumors a possible Deadpool spin-off might be in the works. Then Reynolds signed up to play GL/Hal Jordan and the spin-off rumors slowed until recently.

Reynolds has openly pursued the role of Deadpool since 2005, when he told the media he was working with screenwriter David Goyer on a script.

Do not doubt the fact Reynolds could be sitting at home right now, contemplating hanging up the green suit for a red one—but this is just my take.

Deadpool rumors never subsided, a director was announced, the script was written and reynolds continuely mentioned that it was still happening, at this point I don't think it's a slight possibility reynolds will choose deadpool, I think it's a sure thing...

Getting kinda tired of seeing this guy in CBMs to be honest.

He never had to choose one or the other. He was always going to do both. It's not "jumping ship" as much as it is "doing what he already planned on doing."

Too tell you the truth, Batman Returns was a pretty great movie. The only wrong made in that movie was the Penguin, but everything else was just perfect.
So again, Batman only have done TWO bad movies.

Batman Returns was my most favorite Batman film and my most favorite CBM in general.

The music was beautiful in a very dark and haunting way. The characters had depth...I loved the reimagining of Penguin and the action plus story were great.

I know Penguin wasn't anything remotely like the classic version...but who cares? I loved it! He was darker...more disgusting and I loved the fact that he was more penguin than human in the movie for a change.

Best CBM TO DATE.

If indeed a sequel did get the greenlight, and if indeed Ryan decides he'd rather not do it and if indeed he manages to find a way out of the contract he signed that obligates him to appear in sequels, he still doesn't have to choose one or the other. So he'd be jumping ship, not "jumping ship for Deadpool" because he could still do both. Not everything has to be DC Vs. Marvel.

Ryan has been in 3 and starred in one. Blade Trinity was Wesley Snipps, Ryan & Jessica were supporting roles. In X-men Wolverine he had about 15 minutes and Green Lantern well you know that story.

The main reason a Deadpool spin-off is so popular is because when Ryan Reynolds played Wade Wilson it was so popular and everyone loved. Plus the script was written for him so not making him the star wouldn't be smart.

P.S blaming him for X-men origins and Blade is unfair, he was the best part of both movies.

Ryan Reynolds is that pretty boy actor who is really suitable for romantic comedy movies, such as The Proposal. This guy has not lived up to all of his comic book superhero hype as some of us keen critics have noticed by now. Maybe it was his director's fault in both films or his false interest who knows. If Ryan does Deadpool,he needs to trash his petty comedy and actually portray his dark character in a serious manner. Not to mention having a potential director to write a solid story. Green Lantern was a joke. It was full of lame superhero showoff which was suitable for back in the 1970s or so. A poorly written script full of laughs for the audience and unrealistic graphics spelled doom to Ryan's guarantee to his GL fans!

I fail to understand how this hack continues to get work as an actor, no matter the genre. I have seen him four or five movies over the years, and his acting always makes me want to throw something through the screen.

@SCOURGE- Reynolds is a great actor. He just really sucks at picking CBM roles. 3 CBM roles he's had have all stunk badly.

Ryan is a fine actor. He had 15 miniutes in X-men origins, his role in Blade for me is great! I enjoyed the Green Lantern, it needed more character development and I have a feeling the chop this movie to pieces in editing which was not Ryan job. The final product was the producer and Studio.

As much as I support the idea of a DEADPOOL movie, I just don't think it will be a financial success. If you can't get GREEN LANTERN to sing, good luck with DEADPOOL. BTW, w/ that much money lost, there's no way GREEN LANTERN 2 happens. I don't care what the recent stories swirling around were claiming.

@marvel72, I think that's just a bad coincidence, despite those films being average at best (never seen Blade 3 mind) Reynolds is consistently good as an actor, and always does the best he can with the poor material he is so often given.
I think being such a big comic fan is actually his downfall in a way, he's so eager to get the roles he wants, he probably settled for things like X-Men and Green Lantern just to solidify his name in the roles as a set up to better quality sequels where his comic knowledge could come in useful.

@LEEE... "beautifully made"... really? The first half was fine (not amazing, not beautiful, just fine) while the second half was an attrocity. I agree that there should be a "bigger better GREEN LANTERN II" but I also don't think it will happen, the film is a critical and financial flop. They have potentially lost 200million dollars on that film, hardly a success. It looked good, but it wasn't a good film. Sorry, but hey, it could be a good thing. Next time around, they'll treat it with more respect. And as for FOX, First Class was 10 times better than GL. Again, sorry if I sound harsh, but I'm being realistic, and I also think both characters deserve more respect, and I think Reynolds is better suited to Deadpool.

I'd prefer to see Reynolds in a great Deadpool film (the role was made for him) than another mediocre Green Lantern. His 15 minutes as Wade in Wolverine was like a comic come to life (the rest of the film, not so much)

Ryan did a video interview right before GL came out saying that a director had been chosen. An article with the video interview is here: http://veryaware.com/2011/06/deadpool-movie-will-be-nasty-says-ryan-reynolds/

I love that they talked about Deadpool when the interview was supposed to promote Green Lantern.

Your so right Ryan Reynolds is one the Best Male Actors
And Dropping the GL role would be amazing And to change to one of the Greatest Super Heroe/Villian is great

To be fair the bad reception wasn't aimed at Ryan himself. The failings laud with the editing and script. It is in no way a sinking ship that he needs to exit. It's an expensive mistake (in most people's opinion) but it is a great character that can be salvaged.

I think that after R.I.P.D. (which is his next picture, I think) he should stick with GL. As much as WE want a Deadpool movie I'm not sure an R-rated superhero would draw much more popularity. Even though the budget to profit ration may be more lucrative than GL.

Losing Reynolds to another, potential, franchise will mean we will not see an improved GL movie. A chance to learn from past mistakes and get the perfect GL movie we deserve

jesus.

and why would he need to "jump ship" to do Deadpool? he signed on for GL sequels, and he also signed on for Deadpool. The plan was always to do Deadpool after GL. There is no conflict.

From day one of signing on to both movies, he's been saying he can do both.

also, jumping out of a contract is very bad for business if you're an actor. it gives you a bad name, and almost no one does it.

so the only way he would not do GL2 is if WB decided not to make it. but he's doing Deadpool regardless.

deadpool movie is not going to happen.

theaceofknaves - 7/9/2011, 9:03 AM
@superwolverine- there is more chance of a deadpool movie than a green lantern sequel.

green lantern will not get sequel, it's a financial disaster. the green lantern franchise is D.O.A

deadpool will be made for around 50 million dollars and be rated r. which is perfect for the character.

as for fox? seems to me they've turned over a new leaf. first class was excellent and matthew vaughn wouldn't have even made it if he felt fox were up to their old tricks again.
