DUNE Opens To $40.1 Million At The Domestic Box Office; Passes $200 Million Worldwide

Dune is now playing in U.S. theaters, and despite debuting simultaneously on HBO Max, Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic took in over $40 million domestically, passing the $200M mark globally in the process.

Dune has exceeded expectations with a strong $40.1 million opening at the U.S. box office, despite debuting in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service at the same time. This gives the movie the best domestic opening of any dual theatrical/streaming Warner Bros. release to date, besting Godzilla vs. Kong ($31.7 million).

Earlier estimates indicated a $30M-$35M opening for Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi adaptation, so Warner Bros./Legendary should be pleased with this result. It remains to be seen if Dune has staying power, of course, but the movie has been performing very well overseas up to this point (it premiered last month in several locations) and has now passed the $200 million mark globally.

Dune was a hit with the majority of critics, but a few last-minute negative reviews have dropped its Rotten Tomatoes score to 83%. This doesn't seem to have deterred moviegoers, however, and the film has a surprisingly high audience score of 91%.

Insiders believe a sequel announcement is imminent, especially after WarnerMedia CEO Ann Sarnoff recently suggested that a follow-up may already be greenlit.

It seems to me that WB's strategy actually worked somewhat. They premiered the film at festivals, and released early in Europe, and it gained a lot of buzz from that. It actually is a global film because US audiences are frankly not intellectual enough, on average, to relate to what they are watching.

I think I saw that it's made $35 mil in China. Put it all together, and I think the movie has made enough globally to make its nut back and earn a sequel.

I am a little worried that the sequel will suffer a bit the same as Muschietti's "IT" though because 2-3 years is a long time to hold the public's interest these days, and the movie also felt, at times, dull and generally humourless. The wrap up of the film made me want to see the sequel right away though, so I would say they need to do something urgently to satisfy our craving for a conclusion. I would compare the whole phenomenon to The Witcher, in that we've had a taste, and suddenly we are facing a perception of scarcity as a result.

Didn’t love the movie but I’m glad DV is getting some box office love. The guy deserves it and I hope there’s a sequel although I probably won’t watch it if it’s not available on streaming

Watched it yesterday and it didn't work for me.
My younger brother on the other hand, who has read the books liked it.

Arrival is still my personal favourite of Dennis Villeneuve's movies.

An amazing movie, I watched it a year or two after it came out and remember being late to the game

@SimplyAz - me too. Wish I would've caught it in theaters. Probably my favorite sci-fi of the last decade or so

@SimplyAz - Arrival is probably my favorite too. Mainly because I had no idea what to expect except for knowing there was gonna be a twist, and when the twist dropped I was blown away. None of his other really ever did that
SimplyAz
SimplyAz - 10/24/2021, 6:39 PM
@bkmeijer -

I think you're right, that movie paid off with what the twist was and an emotional gut Punch.
It was the first of his movies I saw and the others haven't hit the same level for me
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 10/24/2021, 6:45 PM
@SimplyAz - definitely. Most of the time I can figure a twist if I know there is gonna be one, but so far no movie (not just from Denis) have managed to hit that level of blowing me away either

Honestly, seen it 3 times now. Wasn't completely sold on it at first, but I love it now. It's the best Star Wars movie since 1983 lol hope they get to the really weird cosmic shit like the God Emperor of Dune
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 10/24/2021, 6:03 PM
@Dredd97 - I agree. Even though it had some passive protagonists, the first thing I thought after watching Dune was that this should've been the story of the last Star Wars movie. All characters are pretty much interchangable

@Dredd97 - I’m hoping I have the same experience. I didn’t love it on first watch, but both my wife and I mentioned how we were still thinking about it a few days afterward, which is a good sign in my opinion. I will rewatch at home this week and see how I feel about it going in with different expectations.

This film changed alot from the book. How do readers of the book feel about that?
Benjamitesandwich
Benjamitesandwich - 10/24/2021, 12:38 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - As a massive fan of the books, I have some thoughts about this:

I don’t necessarily feel they changed anything, but rather some key scenes were removed for time and pacing (like the dinner scene). I’m a little bothered by this, but at the same time, I know a lot more was filmed, so there’s hope for an extended cut.

I was talking to a friend about this, and he said that his friend, who knows nothing about Dune, loved it. And we both agreed that the fact that Dennis and his team made a Dune movie that was digestible enough for casual viewers is mind-blowing. And I’m happy about this. It’s the best possible adaptation, if this is what it was able to do.

I liken it to LOTR. I have never read the books, but I LOVE the movies. I also understand there are discrepancies between the books and the movies, but this has no impact on me as one who has never read the books. Perhaps this will be how Dune is to those who have never read the books.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/24/2021, 12:40 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - It didn't really change anything major. Probably the biggest thing was not introducing a main character, Feyd, and dropping an important plot point with Jessica and Thufir Hawat, who was barely in the movie.
