STAR WARS Legend Mark Hamill Wanted Luke Skywalker To Turn To The Dark Side In RETURN OF THE JEDI

The handling of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars sequels remains a hotly debated topic, but the legendary Mark Hamill has now revealed that he wanted Skywalker turn to the Dark Side in Return of the Jedi!

Luke Skywalker's journey across the original Star Wars trilogy was fascinating, as he went from Tatooine farmboy to Jedi Knight. However, there definitely seemed to be a slightly darker edge to Luke when we met him again in Return of the Jedi, something his black robes appeared to indicate.

In a new interview, actor Mark Hamill has revealed his hopes that Luke was going to follow in his father's footsteps in the 1983 movie, falling to the Dark Side like Anakin Skywalker before him.

Discussing the movie, which was originally titled Revenge of the Sith, he recalled complaining to George Lucas about the film's ending. "I said, 'It's so predictable and pat,' and he said, 'Mark, don't forget. These things were made for children.'"

"Because I was wearing all black, I thought I would go to the Dark Side in the last one," Hamill explained, "And, of course, you have to redeem yourself." He added, "Every actor wants to play their own evil twin."

That's not the way things played out for his character, and Luke eventually overcame Emperor Palpatine's attempts to turn him into a Sith.

The Last Jedi teased Luke's darker nature when he considered striking down his nephew Ben Solo, but by the time we saw him in The Rise of Skywalker, it was clear that he was a true Jedi Master.

"These things were made for children".

Suddenly an intense squeal of overweight, nerdy proportions was heard all over the world. Comicbook nerds and Star Wars geeks alike yelped in unison as their pathetic fandom slowly crumbled.

@TheJustinHammer - I always felt that he used the Dark Side to defeat Vader. I don't think you ever go all the way otherwise Vader and later Kylo (SPOILER) could not be redeemed.

@TheJustinHammer - "You can go all the way"

Can you tho? Not sure if this was intended but Palpatine showed an unusual amount of mercy and concern toward Vader.

He did not show that much concern for his other previous apprentices...one of whom was still alive when we all thought otherwise...something Palpatine should have been able to sense.

@TheJustinHammer - BUT...

There was ANOTHER instance in which Palpatine seemed to think more of Vader than himself. In a back and forth with Yoda, he seems to expect Vader to someday surpass himself.

DARTH SIDIOUS : [ignites his lightsaber] You will not stop me! Darth Vader will become more powerful than either of us!

YODA : Faith in your new apprentice, misplaced may be. As is your faith in the dark side of the Force.

I think these two instances show some level of concern from Palpatine for someone other than himself which to me is a spark of light even in the most evil of characters. It does seem to change when he asks Luke to kill Vader...so it is unclear or just bad writing.

@Forthas - @Forthas - Just becaus a evil character spares someone does not mean he is showing compassion. He finds Vader useful, and he will be more powerful for him, and continue the reign of the sith. If you think a evil character showing is mercy is a act of goodness, then the devil is a real angel.

There is no bad writing.

@SaoriseRonan - Well......no bad writing in this case.

@Forthas - This is an interesting point. Luke clearly beat Vader with anger. He lost control for a minute and went attacked with tons of anger and fury. He was definitely teetering. But he also made the decision not to kill him. He caught himself before completely falling.

Whats more interesting is when Palps told Luke to embrace his anger and the dark side and strike him down. And Luke actually did! He force pulled his saber and tried to kill Palpatine, but Vader stopped him.

To me, that is far more important than defeating Vader with all that anger. Because he COULD have killed Vader, but chose not to. He actually did try to kill Palps. The intent was totally there. Its kind of like, does it really matter that Vader stopped him when he clearly tried to do it anyway? Just the act of trying means he embraced his anger and dark side, whether he was stopped before landing the killing blow or not.

@CorndogBurglar - He says "Strike me down with all your hatred and your journey towards the dark side wil be complete." Luke didn't strike him down, so nah.

@SaoriseRonan -

This line only makes sense if you take the events of The Clone Wars into account (which was not created yet by that point). Otherwise, you truly wonder where that's coming from.

In Revenge of the Sith, Jedi are still truly depicted as heroic figures. In The Clone Wars, it's far more complex as they've clearly lost their way during the war, doing more harm than good.

@CorndogBurglar - You know what...

That is an EXCELLENT point I did not even think about. In a sense he was definitely at least on the road to the dark side and as Yoda said!

YODA: "If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny."

Great catch! Thanks!

It was originally called Revenge of the JEDI not Revenge of the Sith

@alten2345 - Methinks thou dost mix movies. Return of the Jedi was originally called Revenge of the Jedi.

I think the big thing that JJ failed or ignored to pull from early drafts of the REVENGE OF JEDI scripts were the idea that Jedi Force Ghosts could RETURN to human form.

I think that would have made an epic ending in TROS.

@IronGenesis - That would have somehow made it worse
