AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Director James Cameron Defends Sequel's 3-Hour Runtime: "Give Me A F***ing Break!"

Like Avengers: Endgame and The Batman, Avatar: The Way of Water will boast a three-hour runtime. Now, filmmaker James Cameron has lashed out at those who feel that's too long for a blockbuster movie...

Blockbuster movies have gotten increasingly longer in recent years, and it's become commonplace for major studio tentpoles to boast three-hour plus runtimes  (Avengers: Endgame and The Batman are two recent examples). Marvel Studios has gone down a different route lately, however, as the Doctor Strange sequel and Thor: Love and Thunder are among their shortest movies.

Avatar was a longer movie than most back in 2009 at a whopping 162 minutes, and filmmaker James Cameron is unsurprisingly pulling out all the stops with Avatar: The Way of Water.

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine (via SFFGazette.com), the director made it clear that he doesn't care if people aren't on board with his plans to deliver a sequel that's at least three hours long. "I don't want anybody whining about length when they sit and binge-watch [television] for eight hours," he says. "I can almost write this part of the review. 'The agonisingly long three-hour movie...'"

"It's like, give me a f***ing break," Cameron continued. "I've watched my kids sit and do five one-hour episodes in a row."

It's a fair point in some ways, though it's worth bearing in mind that you can pause a TV show or take a break between episodes! For those who don't want to miss anything, sitting through a three-hour movie can be a bit of a pain...particularly for those with a somewhat weak bladder.

To that, Cameron simply said, "Here's the big social paradigm shift that has to happen: it's okay to get up and go pee." Well, if he says it's okay, we're guessing missing a few minutes of Avatar: The Way of Water won't matter too much.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

To whet audiences' appetites, Disney/20th Century Studios will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23. As for Avatar: The Way of Water, that arrives in theaters worldwide on December 16.

Long movies used to have intermissions. I remember half dying during a summer screening of Lawrence of Arabia at university. There was an intermission in Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet. It would not kill Avatar to have a break in the middle, and it's great for the cinema concessions.

@zeon00 - I'm not sure how this pertains to my comment. I realize there are indigenous people all over the world but in regards to my comment I feel that the Navi are blue Native Americans.

Not really... unless we have the ability to pause Avatar 2 whenever we want and just go take a sh*t and come back. A majority of the time a longer runtime means either you can trim stuff or that you'll feel every second of that larger runtime and be more scrutinous when it comes to reviewing. It's incredibly rare you watch a 3 hour film and want to see more

The simple reality is you can binge content at home a lot easier because you have no social pressure to behave in a set way, you can be loud, you can relax, you can pause the media and go jack off or rewind if you missed something.

In a cinema, you are stuck in a room with a lot of other people. If you leave and miss stuff, you can't go back. If Avatar 2 was releasing online this would not be a problem but it's releasing in cinema.

As long as the movie is good, 3 hours can pass by quite quickly.

Yeah, it’s not about length it’s about pacing. If you get the right pacing a la Endgame, the film can be long. However, perceptions of pacing can be subjective.

I seem to remember Avatar feeling a little long around about the time the massive tree came down.

Pacing is definitely a factor, but length is a problem when you are consuming media in a crowded cinema without the ability to pause if you have to leave.

Honestly, Avatar should have been two films. The first film ending when the tree came down with the emotional defeat and the impression the villains won. The second film should have tackled a rising resistance force as the humans slowly encroach upon the territory and feature Jake going around convincing the other tribes to join - something thats skimmed over in a montage in the first movie.

Honestly, Jake convincing the other tribes kinda damages the nature of any sequel, because he already united every tribe in the planet once - it shouldn't be difficult for him to do so again.

Im fine with 3 hours

Assuming the movie is something im interested in and its actually good

Not interested in this avatar

On another topic, the first 3 movies for the real avatar franchise are a Zuko movie, a Kyoshi movie and a Korra movie

@dracula - Looking forward to those myself too. Avatar is one of my favorite franchises ever. Last I heard, one of the movies was set in Korra-era in the timeline, but have they since confirmed that it will focus on Korra as the main character?
