AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Director James Cameron Has Words Of Advice For Those Worrying About Bathroom Breaks

With Avatar: The Way of Water set to clock in at a whopping 3 hours and 10 minutes, director James Cameron has shared his thoughts on when moviegoers might want to consider taking a bathroom break...

It wasn't too long ago that a movie being over two and a half hours was considered painfully long, but in recent years, we've seen more and more releases approach the mammoth three-hour mark.

Avengers: Endgame was over three hours, and ended up becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time before Avatar regained its top spot. Now, with it confirmed that the latter's upcoming sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, will be a whopping three hours and ten minutes, James Cameron has weighed in on how moviegoers should handle their bathroom breaks.

"[Viewers should go to the bathroom] any time they want," the director told The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) when asked about the bladder-straining 192-minute runtime. "They can see the scene they missed when they come see it again."

It's not exactly a shock Cameron has that attitude following reports Avatar: The Way of Water cost upwards of $400 million to produce. While the sequel has secured a release in China, repeat viewings from positive word of mouth will be essential to the 3D movie's success, particularly if Disney hopes to turn a profit.

The studio acquired the Avatar franchise during the Disney/Fox merger and the filmmaker points out that he was upfront with them from the start. "I said [to Disney], 'You bought this from a bunch of guys at Fox who agreed to a three-hour movie,' because that's what we said we were going to do. We're going to play the epic game."

That "epic game" will include at least one more movie, though there are already plans in place for Avatar 4 and 5. If Cameron has his way, the franchise will go beyond even those. "I’d be 89 by then," he says of potentially making sixth and seventh chapters. "Obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required."

"I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director," he continued, "you don’t know how to do this."

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, the sequel begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water splashes down in theaters worldwide on December 16.

I think that the studio is going to be very disappointed with the box office on this movie, whether it isa good movie or not.

@DocSpock - disney is gonna be disappointed when this is their highest grossing film of 2022 by a considerable margin? i think they’d be more worried about strange world atomic bombing, but that’s just me

BlackStar25 - 12/1/2022, 9:15 PM
@tmp3 - Why worry about Strange World? They barely promoted it and put it in a poor release window.

@BlackStar25 - maybe because they invested $180m on it, lol

Bold of him to assume people are going to rewatch a 3 hour film again to rewatch a scene they missed. Bold of him to assume this film has the hype the first one had.

Maybe this time the movie will have a good plot & dialog to go with the beautiful visuals.

That’s not exactly good advice. If the movie is bad people might not want to come back and see it.

"I'm not going to be able to make Avatar films forever"

But who actually wants you to?
Why not make a sequel, or heck shoot part 2 and 3 back to back. But 12 years for a full on franchise production that feels more like a vanity project than anything?

I get why he has it, but man the ego on this guy lmfao… he has to train a successful director how to direct avatars and/or 3D… what a joke, he’s never really even had a good eye, framing and composition on his films is barely better than joss whedon circa avengers 1.

@ReverseFlasher - I respectfully disagree. Aliens has some of the most epic shots/sequences of any sci-fi or action movie. Terminator 1, and more so 2 are pretty amazing feats given the era they were made. The sinking scenes in Titanic. The claustrophobic feels in The Abyss. Even True Lies is low key epic in parts. Guy talks a big game, but he’s probably the GOAT of action movies. It’s a bit like saying Jordan’s jumper was ugly.

I remember way back in the day going to see Titanic in theatres in Holland. I had done no research on its length and so was surprised when half way in, a blue screen came up saying "intermission". It was such a brilliant move!

I have a great solution if you don't want to get up and use the washroom.....

Use the washroom before the movie and order a small to medium drink.

It's like Avatar is James Cameron's Star Wars. Think of what we could've gotten from him if he didn't dedicate all of his time to it.

Our advice to James Cameron:

Don't have your beautiful movie suck this time.

Here's an idea: pause it. Disney Plus has that feature! You can get up and take a break from this 3 hour and 10 minute ego-fest. That's certainly what I will be doing.

People can talk shit all they want, but the level of craftsmanship that has gone into this and the last one is above and beyond anything else out there, and that’s what paid off the first time around and likely will this time. I was no big fan of Avatar when it came out 13 years ago, but as I’ve grown older and watched my son repeatedly watch the first, I’ve discovered a new found appreciation not just for the movie on a technical level, but the enjoyment there is to be had in its narrative.

Quite the assumption I'll be watching it twice. I'll probably warch it just the once, and that might not even be in the cinema. Can always pause it at home
