AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Passes AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR To Become Fifth Highest-Grossing Film Of All Time

The box office juggernaut that is Avatar: The Way of Water shows no signs of slowing down, and after recently swimming past Spider-Man: No Way Home to claim its spot as sixth highest-grossing movie of all time, James Cameron's sci-fi sequel has now overtaken another Marvel film on the list.

The latest box office figures are in, and The Way of Water has made $2.054 billion worldwide, just scraping past Avengers: Infinity War, which amassed $2.052B back in 2018.

The 3-hour epic is now the fifth-biggest movie ever, but can it climb even higher? Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion) is its next hurdle, but Avatar 2 will start to face some stiff competition in the coming weeks with the likes of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Shazam! Fury of the Gods on the horizon.

Even if never made another cent, this is an incredible achievement for a movie a lot of people were betting against since it was first announced.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.

Avatar: The Way of Water is still in theaters. No streaming dates have been finalized.

I love how much this movie's success angers people. Hope it breaks more records.

@UrbanEnigma - feel like it only angers people on this site, haven't seen much hate on Reddit or anywhere else.

@UrbanEnigma - It's just so petty and pathetic.

@UrbanEnigma - and let's not forget the crowd pretending they don't see the pathetic losers angry over this.

It's pretty easy to find them. It's the same crowd.

@Taonrey - might be because I blocked quite a few accounts, but I barely see any angered people on here either

@bkmeijer1 - I think blocking those types takes some of the fun away from this site. It's part of the charm IMHO.

@GreedoSarducci - the funny ones I didn't block, but I won't be seeing those anymore that are just constantly spewing negativity

@bkmeijer1 - YES!! "Blocking" has some great uses! I have a pleasant time whenever I visit here.

@UrbanEnigma - Same. It's just not worth getting all worked up over a movie; ANY movie really. When I see people getting all angry about BP, or Captain Marvel, or TLJ, or Avatar 2, or any number of successful movies they hoped would fail, I just laugh.

So how is this compared to the first? I thought the first one was extremely forgettable outside of the visuals.

@Taonrey - I don’t hate either of them, but I would say the first is better. It has a sense of wonder that the sequel lacks.

@Taonrey - It was good, speaking from someone that has only watched the first one once, when it first came out. Not sure I'll ever watch it again though

@Taonrey - I liked the second more because it wasn't another Pocahontas, it has more heart as well

Congrats! I imagine the filmmakers of those top films aren't even competetive about it by that point, if they ever strictly were trying for it specifically. No need to compete, they're all in the club.

Saw it again this past week and it gets better and better each time. The scale of that movie is unbelievable. That last hour is James Cameron in peak form. Wasn't really excited for more Avatar sequels after the first but after this one? Bring them all on.

Bro what happened to this goddamn site that we have people taking shots at Infinity War of all things to suck Cameron's dick? I feel like an old man remembering what it used to be.

@ShellHead

More than half of this site still doesn’t understand why Avatar is an extremely successful franchise. A lot of people here thought it wouldn’t hit a billion before it came out.

Cameron rn:

And before anyone comes at me I enjoyed Infinity War more than Way of Water. 🫡

@ShellHead -Personally I think it’s a result of Marvl alienating the core fans that supported them from the very beginning to instead hire people that don’t care about the source material (Nate Moore admitted this himself).
