BOX OFFICE: PACIFIC RIM Has Warner Bros.' Highest Opening Ever In China With $9 Million

Does this mean a sequel is now a legitimate possibility? Well, the Guillermo del Toro helmed Pacific Rim had Warner Bros. highest China opening of all-time with $9 million, but there's still nothing to say that it will turn a profit. Read on for details!

Deadline reports that Pacific Rim has kicked off its run at the Chinese box office with an impressive $9 million. That's actually a record breaking opening for a Warner Bros. movie and even beats the Harry Potter films. With 70% of the market share in the now vital territory, could a sequel be back on the cards? Well, while there does seem to be buzz around that idea, it's hard to imagine the movie grossing enough to make that possible. Firstly, it's highly unlikely that Pacific Rim will reach $100 million in North America, and while it does have a current worldwide total of $224 million (which is slightly more than its rumoured budget), the Tweet below may give you an idea as to why how well it does in China ultimately won't matter. Will Warner Bros. realistically greenlight a sequel to a big budget film which barely turns a notable profit? I think not. What a shame!

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
