BOX OFFICE: PACIFIC RIM Is #1 Overseas; Big Budget Blockbuster May Still Not Turn A Profit

There was some surprising news for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures this weekend as Pacific Rim managed to defeat Despicable Me 2 to become the #1 film internationally. It grossed $35.3 million for a total of $110.9 million overseas, giving it a worldwide cume of $178.5 million. However, this isn't really all that impressive given the fact that it's believed the budget was anything from between $180 - 220 million. Many analysts don't believe that the film will cross $100 million domestically and there's still a good chance that it will fail to turn a profit. Of course, a lot of that depends on how well it performs in locations such as China and Japan, but even then it may not make enough for the studio to confidently move forward with a sequel; after all, a summer tentpole such as Pacific Rim should ultimately reach at least $500 million. Even World War Z (which had a lot of bad buzz going in and was marketed quite poorly by Paramount) has so far grossed upwards of $450 million. Do you guys think Pacific Rim deserves a sequel?





When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. Awesome movie, just enormous mistake in marketing and release date.

It deserves a sequel but I'm sure it will be cancel. Not enough money. Dumb people going to see Grown Up 2.

We all knew what we were getting ourselves into. It wasn't supposed to be a movie with a great story. It was supposed to be a movie with great eyecandy F**KING GIANT ROBOTS VS. GIANT MONSTERS! And that is exactly what we got!

Yes this movie deserves a sequel, although with the ending how could we get one? I suppose the portal

From what I understand though Legendary owns the property, not Warners. That would mean they're taking it with them to Universal. Regardless of whether Warner Bros makes a profit, the decision lies with Universal. After whatever it ends up making theatrically plus home video, I'd wager it gets a sequel. If Kick-Ass got one then why not Pac Rim

Ive never known such a crowded couple of months, I was sure MoS would make 300 domestically and about 750 worldwide, but it will (I say only) make about 670/680 million

It certainly deserves a sequel..infinitely better than any Transformer movie & that franchise has 4 films going.

I knew about this film due to being a fan of Del Toro films but recently realized I never saw a commercial for this film.
It was poorly promoted it seems.

They spent how much on this?! Hopefully after this year's string of big budget flops (hopefully... maybe...) Hollywood will learn not to blow out these ridiculous budgets unless you're positively certain that film can make it back.

Anyway, it doesn't need a sequel. I'd like to have one though because I want them to explore the concept of drifting more and more, unique Yaegers would be cool to see.

Pacific Rim only opened many small territories initially and a couple of the big markets overseas. This weekend it opened in about another ten countries and still not in either of the big giants outside of the US, i.e China or Japan. China get it at the very end of this month, Japan gets it a week into August. For the film to do over $100 million without either of these two huge territories as well as another 12 territories (including Brazil which is also huge) then that' pretty damn great going in just a mere week.

No movie makes over "$500 million" in a week release, not even if it releases everywhere at the same time. World War Z has exactly the same $190 million budget and although its doing better in the US, it made exactly the same amount overseas as Pacific rim in after the first week and weekend, $110 million. Right now World war Z has practically been released everywhere except Spain, Venuzuela and Japan (it has no release deal with China) and still has managed to make $269 million in a month internationally.

World War Z currently stands at $456 million worldwide in a month. Pacific Rim at $178 million worldwide after a week, will make a helluva lot more money in the Asian markets than probably any Hollywood movie this year and compensate for it poor box office in the US easily. It will be interesting to see what both these films finish on since they have the same budget. If they finish on near enough the same amount and they still call World War Z a hit but call Pacific Rim a Flop then I'm calling bullshit!

And the movie is a stand alone flick, it does not require a sequel. The worst thing in this dire age of Hollywood is the retarded necessity to keep making the same movie with a number stuck at the end until people cant be bothered to pay to see how it sightly varies from the original. The dumbass obsession the suits who run Hollywood have with turning everything into a quick-buck making franchise needs to end.

@Maia87 - Say that after you've seen Cronos, The Devil's Backbone or Pan's Labyrinth. His Hollywood movies are an indulgence in what he can get away with making for studios who like to blow insane amounts of cash looking for the next Star Wars. His Mexican flicks are the real deal.

Pacific Rim was dookie stains for sure, but this is unfortunate. Making a movie takes great effort and time out of peoples lives only for it to be a passing thing for consumers.

But the lesson here is; Mr. Toro, get back to making artistic and creative visions of unique weirdness. The big, dumb, blockbuster is not your thing.

good film,could of been so much better.

the cgi was awesome,the fights were fantastic,it was the acting & script which let the movie down.

better than transformers 2 & 3,probably as good as transformers if not slightly better.

best film of the summer 3/5

Here's what went wrong:
Opening sequence was "Flash Bang Awesome", and then you had to settle in for 20 minutes of nothing robotic or monstrous.
Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon take to the sea, and get flattened immediately, so that stunk.
You see Striker Eureka fight a kaiju on a news clip. NO ! I want to see the whole fight scene, not a 10 second scene from a news flash.
In the end, when they went into the ocean, you lost the scale of how big these robots are, they might as well have been just guys in metal suits.
Biggest peev, lots of action in the rain, and the dark. Bust it out in the daytime, like the old Godzilla movies (and hopefully the new Godzilla does this also!).

Good movie, good have been great.

The movie is just fine, though could've been way better, but that's not exactly the reason of why I don't want to see a sequel - I mean, come on, what's left to be told, anyway? If they force a sequel to go, they have to completely deconstruct the first movie in the first place, in order to provide a material for the sequel to tell about...and judging from what we've got, I bet such a move will be an extremely cop-out one! So no, thanks.
