BOX OFFICE: Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Opens With $14M On Friday!

After a solid opening in midnight showings, FOX and Rupert Wyatt's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes collected $14 million on Friday and it's on track to gross between $35M and $40M.

In August, box office numbers are not usually big, especially compared to months like May, June or July. But, Rupert Wyatt's latest film Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes starring James Franco, Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis playing Caesar, is off to a solid opening. Film grossed $14 million on Friday and it could get to $38M by the end of this weekend. From The Hollywood Reporter:

"Twentieth Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes is off to a strong early start at the domestic box office, with preliminary returns suggesting a Friday gross of $14 million."

Film had a reported budget of $93 million, which is not a lot when you look at Thor and Green Lantern's budget, and almost every big film this year was playing in 3D. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is a 2D film, and usually 3D adds $8-10M. Many are comparing this one to Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens, which had a budget over $160M and it opened in the (probably) same range as Apes. Stay tuned for full report.

Wow. I hate monkeys, especially gorillas, they're disgusting creatures so I kinda didn't wanna watch it. But it looked really good and it has James Franco which I always found it weird seeing him play a smart guy since I'm used to seeing him as a stoner now. O.o The bf wanted to see it and it made so much frickin money and got good reviews I think I'ma have to watch this one and I think I will like it. Wanted to watch Cowboys & Aliens first but I might have to really watch this! I'm actually starting to really want to. Crazy.

I smell a new franchise brewing! This will make loads of money around the world just like the originals.

@HellsHammer: Thanks I'll keep that in mind.

Still curious as to where all these apes come from in San Francisco and how with spears they can overtake law enforcement and military with assault rifles. Seems like a stretch for me, but I will have to wait til it is out on Netflix to see. Not really interested in it other than that curious factor.

Does anyone know if the apes learn to speak in this or not?

@PandaSquidMonster
(SPOILER)

Only Caeser learns to speak and its bout 4 words total. But in one spoiler scene, it seems one of the Apes is trying to speak with his last words before dying almost. All in all, his Caeser's speaking parts are quite EPIC even with the very few words that are spoken.

@Ranger14- and AR15 would do little to stop a large animal like a gorilla. Contrary to what the news says most assault rifles are not "high caliber". If you went hunting predators with an AR or AK you would likely be mauled by a pissed off and wounded animal.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 8/5/2011, 10:53 PM
^^^That was just thrown out as an example. It would definitely stop a chimpanzee or orangutan and a clip into an ape would also do the job. I have shot an assault rifle and it can do some serious damage. SWAT teams don't even use and AR15. The military and law enforcement do have much more powerful weapons than an AR15l. I just think it looks ridiculous that a bunch of apes with spears can overtake a modern technology protected city.

Boxofficemojo may list Superman Returns at 270 million to make but according to Singer,it cost 209 mil. Boxofficemojo and others keep adding the development cost of various Superman film projects that took place between Superman 4:The Quest for Peace:(1987) and Superman Returns (2006) Those cost were eaten by WB years before Superman Returns came along and were paid for by the Batman and Harry Potter films.
If we stick with Singer's production budget,that would leave Superman Returns with a profit of 182 mil.That might explain why WB is still interested in Superman as a movie property after a rather boring Superman Returns.

@Ranger14

The apes (spoilers ahead) don't take on the military.The fact they defeat the police is due to the fact the cops don't know what they are up against.The cops think the apes are infected.What they were not told is they are intelligent and organized.

I dunno. I was excited about the Tim Burton remake and saw it on opening day...I still feel violated by that one. Been burned by this IP before, so I may wait for a more affordable viewing opportunity. Mind you, I HOPE it's good.

Guys, this movie was absolutely GREAT! I just got home from Movie Tavern and was watching it strictly for the "curiosity factor."

I left a POA convert because it thoroughly impressed me.
@@wholebutkevin is right, the few words Caesar does speak are truly EPIC because of the way Serkis brings him to life, and the deep, deep character development behind him and the other apes.

You will be blown away by how the events unfold of him picking up his ape army! Really cool....

And @@Ranger14
They do not go head to head with the police/military....they "outsmart" them and it is executed very well on screen and also helps to encourage and strengthen your real belief in the idea that they are getting smarter and really could overthrow us. **Spoiler** There is actually a scene that's in the trailer that is depicting EXACTLY what you were just referring to.

@blkyank - Superman Returns had a $230 million production budget and a $40 million Marketing budget, that's why it cost $270 million to produce. The money pent developing the movie between Quest for peace and Superman Returns were legitimately still part of the project so has to be accounted for with the movie. Each film project has its own accounts, the success or failure of another film like Harry Potter or Batman has no bearing on the accounts of another films success or failure when it comes to accounts so its impossible for Harry Potter and Batman to pay for the expenditure of an ongoing Superman Project, that simply isn't how business works.
