Dune is now playing in U.S. theaters, and despite debuting simultaneously on HBO Max, Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic has exceeded expectations at the domestic box office.

Initial weekend estimates indicated a $40 million bow, but updated reports reveal that the movie actually took in $41M, giving the filmmaker his biggest domestic opening and Warner Bros. its best debut for an HBO Max day-and-date title.

Though a sequel has yet to be officially greenlit, this is encouraging start, and it may only be a matter of time before the studio makes an announcement. Villeneuve has always been confident that he will get the opportunity to return to Arrakis to continue the story, and was asked what he could reveal about a potential Part Two during an interview with Screen Rant.

"The difference is just that Dune: Part One, of course, is like an introduction to a world where we explain who is who, who is doing what, and what is the technology? What is the culture here? The second movie, I think, will be an opportunity to have much more fun. In a way, it will be more cinematic. That's what I can say."

"explain who is who"

@OmegaDaGrodd - Exactly lmao, they didn't explain shit. Half the movie I was Googling shit trying to figure out what the hell they were talking about. As someone with no prior knowledge of anything about the world, half the terms meant nothing to me.

And then after finishing the movie I did a little more reading and turns out outside of the terms they didn't explain there was even more that they completely glossed over.

The movie's not bad, but if you know nothing about the world of Dune, then it takes away a lot from it.

I'll just repeat my thoughts from before;

I walked out of Dune saying that this is was like watching a really good TB pilot; it was good, (and the scope was amazing to see in IMAX), but if the other episodes aren't better than I won't be hooked.

Doesn't help it will probably be 2/3 years before Dune Part 2 comes out

@DannRamm113 - I really hope there's a part 2, I think its 1 of the best films this year. it does a great job of selling the universe and lore which I've never read. lots of people have been comparing it to witcher S1 because of all the foreshadowing of destiny and how it ends when he meets the girl he's been waiting for. I think the 2-3 yr wait won't hurt it as it will allow the actor to grow up simba style closer to a man and leader.

it's the 1st film in awhile that's truly "epic" more so than most comic book films released recently. I wonder how Dune is going to compare with Eternals as all the early reviews are saying they are similar.

Really enjoyed the film!

The 3rd act was a tad slow but it sets up the sequel perfectly.

I’m convinced DV needs to do New Gods for DC.

@Cbmfilmjunkie - I think DC should simply cease to make movies.

@SensitivityII - The Batman, Black Adam, and Batgirl are the only movies on their slate that have any potential. Those, and League of Superpets, because it’s hard to screw up a kids movie about pets. Everything else is dropping the ball.

@Cbmfilmjunkie - Dennis Vellinueve already said that with exception to Batman, his not a big superhero fan, so it’s unlikely he’s make New Gods. Would be cool though.

@SensitivityII

Aquaman, the highest grossing DC movie, is getting a sequel. Somehow that movie doesn’t have potential?

I’m not excited about The Flash movie but I am interested. Mostly in Michael Keaton’s Batman return.

Not sure where you’re getting ball dropping. They’ve been on a pretty good run post Josstice League.

I haven’t seen the film in its entirety, but having seen the big spectacle shots on the biggest screen I have ever stood in front of, I am curious how any sequel could be more cinematic.

Loved the movie and reminded me of watching Fellowship for the first time…but much like Fellowship, if the next movie (or movies) don’t deliver then it all won’t matter much because it is setup to the payoff.

@MrDandy - Fellowship shits on this film. It had a better climax. I liked Dune tho.

@McMurdo - that’s because Fellowship shits on every film.

Next film should be much more action heavy and play with expectations of the “chosen one” more. Definitely gives Paul more to do and makes him more active. But first movie was a blast and a great start.

Found myself pretty bored throughout Dune, though I'd probably be ecstatic if I knew more about the source material
