JURASSIC WORLD Sequels Managed To Turn A Profit Despite Having Budgets Twice As Big As Originally Reported

Neither Fallen Kingdom nor Dominion were as successful as 2015's Jurassic World but both movies managed to turn a profit despite the fact their budgets were twice as big as originally reported by Universal.

According to a new report from Forbes (via SFFGazette.com), the Jurassic World sequels - Fallen Kingdom and Dominion - actually cost twice their estimated budgets. This isn't a common occurrence in Hollywood and is information Universal Pictures managed to keep relatively quiet...until now.

The news comes from some recent filings by the studio that note Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom cost $516.1 million. That's nearly three times the reported production budget of $170 million, and while there are extra costs in there such as marketing, that's an insane figure.

Not quite as shocking, but still hard to believe, is the fact Jurassic World Dominion came in at $328.6 million despite its estimated $185 million budget.

As a result, the combined cost of the last two movies in the long-running franchise was a whopping $844.7 million.

You might be thinking of this as an unprecedented disaster for Universal but, believe it or not, both sequels managed to turn an impressive profit. Fallen Kingdom grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and generated a respectable $218.4 million in profit. The odds were stacked against Dominion due to the pandemic, of course, but it too managed to surpass $1 billion when all was said and done.

With a lower budget (despite five months of hotel rooms for its cast and crew during quarantine measures that cost over $600 per night each), the finale to the trilogy made a $235.5 million profit.

Taking all of this into account, we have to believe that it won't be long before Universal revisits the Jurassic franchise in theaters. There have already been some talks about where it could go next, including a post-apocalyptic setting and a lower-budgeted horror movie, but nothing has been confirmed.

Still, with the Fast & Furious franchise racing to the finish line, the studio would be wise to get cameras rolling sooner rather than later.

They need to just tell a simple, character-driven story that keeps the tension high for a single character (or small group)

No more world ending disasters. Just a person who has to overcome impossible odds and dinosaurs to accomplish their basic objective.

@xfan320 - I gotta say, one thing that always bugged me about this franchise is that every movie after the first felt the need to include kids in the films too, and I really wish they would stop that.

@MosquitoFarmer - you're right, every Jurassic Park/World does begin to feel like a "Lesson in Parenthood during Dino Crisis" type movie when you take a step back 😅

Forgot this movie even happened.

They need to lessen the scale of these and stop with the world ending atmosphere. Do a horror story centered around there being an underground sport where people go to the ruins of Jurassic Park to hunt dinosaurs. Alien with Dinosaurs. A 2 hr "Don't Breath"-esq Velociraptors vs humans scenario.

OR

Dinosaurs have escaped captivity and are in the wild. All the first world countries have captured or killed the dinosaurs, but the small countries with less resources have not. Amber deposits are being found in Central American locales other than Isla Nublar.

So you have a story where it's a tiny village descending into chaos as it becomes the focal point of an attempted resources coup, orchestrated by larger power and fending off a wild dinosaur.

You have amber mining, company conflict as the backdrop and side stories/ subplots.

I just can't get into Dominion. I've seen clips from throughout, action beats and such, but this one just left me with no interest to watch it. I can only get so far into it before I just don't care about the plot, or the characters really as I know they'll no doubt be fine ultimately.

How [frick]ing hard is it to make a good movie with the Jurassic Park premise? And they've managed 1 and 1/2 good movies so far.
