GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Director Wants A Crossover Movie With Marvel's AVENGERS

The Avengers have their hands full with Thanos at the moment. Godzilla prepares to face a battery of god-sized monsters. But can you imagine a movie in which Earth's Mightiest take on the King of Monsters?

Back in the 1970s, Marvel acquired the licensing rights to make a series of Godzilla comic books, resulting in a 24-issue run of comics that thrust the giant beast into the Marvel Universe.

Throughout the series, Godzilla faced off against a number of iconic Marvel heroes, including the Fantastic Four, the Champions, Devil Dinosaur and Moon-boy, and the Avengers. It's that last encounter that has caught the attention of Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty.

Dougherty took to social media and shared a photo of the cover of Marvel's Godzilla #23, floating the idea of a crossover movie into the Twitterverse. "This movie would make the world a better place," the director captioned alongside the image.

As you can see, this was the issue in which Earth's Mightiest — Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hank Pym, Wasp, Vision, and Scarlet Witch — were called in stop Godzilla's rampage. I won't spoil how it ends just in case Dougherty's dream of making such a crossover movie ever comes true.

Can you even imagine seeing this battle unfold on the big screen?! Rights issues would probably prevent this from ever actually happening, but I'm sure many felt that way about Spider-Man returning home to Marvel Studios, and look what happened there. We've seen stranger things happen in Hollywood before and while the idea may seem silly or completely unrealistic, there's so much potential for this sort of blockbuster film, both from an entertainment and box office perspective.

Not that Marvel Studios' is hurting at the box office; the recently released Captain Marvel is nearing $1 billion at the box office and its success has pushed the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a whopping $18 billion worldwide since its inception. That number will undoubtedly grow next month when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' cinematic MonsterVerse is experiencing its own success. 2014's Godzilla and 2017's Kong: Skull Island each hauled in over $500 million worldwide. Riding that momentum, the studios are gearing up to release the next chapter in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, in just a few months.

Both Godzilla and the Avengers seem to have their hands full at the moment, but the idea of a future crossover between the two franchises has now been suggested. I can't be the only one hoping for this sort of thing, right?

Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Avengers: Endgame arrives on April 26. Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters about a month later on May 31.

@Doomsday8888 - I've been so checked out of the X-continuity that I don't even know what's going on with a lot of these people.

I mean... is that some kind of Colossus/Magik fusion?

@Spock0Clock
Tbh, we're all in the same boat! :P
That pic is just a tease of what they've planned, as you can see we have 3 Wolverine, Jean, 2 Storm, Nighcrawlers etc... because there are future/past versions of those characters.
Everything is there for a reason tho. :3

@Doomsday8888 - After commenting, I realized it was probably some future alternate reality daughter of Piotr and Kitty (hence having a soul sword) or something.

But hey, at least Gateway got some love. Good for you, Gateway.

Marvel really needs to get into the kaiju game. Fin Fang Foom. It the Living Colossus. Giganto. Ant-Man and the Wasp thrown into the mix. They could (and should) do an Avengers vs. "Godzilla" movie any time they want. My personal pitch has been as a Hercules and Cho film (Herc and Cho unleash It to take down FFF).

Sure, why not? Marvel did it in the comics. This is a perfect what if story for the Disney+ series.

@Soos -

That's true. Though Disney can afford to do it if they really want too.
