GODZILLA MINUS ONE Sequel Will Likely Have A Monster Battle According To Director Takashi Yamazaki

Would you like to see Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki's take on classic Godzilla foes such as King Ghidorah, Destroyah or Gigan? Or should he introduce an original kaiju?

Given its widespread acclaim and remarkable box office performance despite having a small production budget, a Godzilla Minus One sequel seems like more of an inevitability at this point.

However, in the midst of Minus One's theatrical run, director Takashi Yamazaki was loathe to discuss any possibility of a sequel, however, after the film's Oscar nomination, even Yamazaki acknowledges that he'll be making a sequel at some point.

And in that inevitable sequel, it appears Yamazaki intends for Godzilla to engage in combat with another kaiju instead of tearing down Japanese cities.

Speaking to Empire Magazine he stated, "I don’t know if anyone has achieved a more serious tone of kaiju vs kaiju with human drama, that challenge, is something I would like to explore."

He went on to add, "When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it's very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component."

However, there might be a lengthy wait for the sequel as Yamazaki recently told Collider, that he's already committed to filming another project that he'll need to wrap up before starting work on a Minus One sequel.

"I can tell you [the Minus One sequel's] not going to be my next film. I've already got my next film in development that I'm working on but will it be the one after that? That remains to be seen," Yamazaki teased.

Minus One recently ended its North American theatrical run as the 3rd highest-grossing foreign-language film of all-time after Life is Beautiful and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The film also recently secured a Best Visual Effects Oscar nomination, where it will compete against The Creator, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, and Napoleon.  It is the first Oscar nomination for the Godzilla franchise in the IP's history.

Yamazaki (Lupin III: The First, Dragon Quest: Your Story) directed and wrote Godzilla Minus One. In the film Ryunosuke Kamiki portrays Koichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe portrays Noriko Oishi, Yuki Yamada portrays Shiro Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki portrays Sosaku Tachibana, and Hidetaka Yoshioka portrays Kenji Noda.

The official synopsis for the film reads, "In the final days of World War II, a small group of Japanese soldiers encounter a dinosaur-like creature on a remote island and are massacred—leaving only two survivors. Two years later, the creature, now many times its original size and capable of shooting thermonuclear breath, appears and begins attacking ships off the coast of Japan—moving ever closer to the still-devastated, post-war Japanese mainland."

Godzilla Minus One started its limited theatrical run in North America on December 1, following special fan showings on November 29.

What the heck is that mechanical, wanna-be Godzilla?

It's like they took parts from Robo-Cop and a T-800 to put on Godzilla and injected the suit with electric crack.

and since its got samurai swords for hands, how in the world does that think eat? Does it live off the crack with a pump like a diabetic uses to monitor and release insulin when your blood sugar gets too high?

Freaking Junkie Godzilla.

Honestly I hope we don't get a minus one sequel. Don't get me wrong, I love that movie. But I feel like continuing that godzilla will just take away from the impact of the first movie. Especially since we're most likely gonna follow new human characters (really can't see them bringing the originals back).

While my personal TOP-3 Godzilla movies (1954's original, Shin and Minus One) are all movies where Godzilla is the only monster and the plots are very human/drama-driven, I am hungry to see a proper Japanese made kaiju battle again. Personally would be happy with Godzilla facing a new original kaiju, but can't hide my love for MechaGodzilla.

Using Zilla's voice underwater to summon him in Minus One will bring the next Monster, a perfect setup. I just hope they find more ways to have likeable characters in the story. Other than Minus One and 1954 Godzilla that's it, I'm fine with keeping Zilla as the bad guy, it's better than what WB is doing

It would be interesting to see giant monster battles that handle the human perspective.
As much as I've enjoyed Monsterverse, only the first installment really seemed to nail that.
In the others it was more of an afterthought.

@HashTagSwagg - to each their own.
As someone just there to see monsters fight post-2014, I got all I wanted out of both KotM and GvK and look forward to GxK.
With that said, it's a shame to not see them have tapped into the ending of KotM where Titans were active again.

That Gigan redesign piece was made by creature designer Jared Modina. Please credit him. His instagram is jaredmodina.design Such an underrated artist.
Yamazaki, Legendary and Toho need to hire him! I always love his redesigns especially for the monsterverse and his stuff is better than most of the stuff we’ve seen. He even did his own design for Godzilla Minus One. I think Yamazaki and Toho would be impressed

If they want to keep it grounded (which they should): Anguirus, Rodan, Varan, Titanosaurus, or even Kong. Any of the mutated dinosaur/animal Kaiju. Alien and giant robot Kaiju don't fit in Minus One's universe.

Does this movie really need a sequel?

@Himura - I don't think so. It's literally a perfect Godzilla film. The best ever. Just leave it alone.
