Roland Emmerich Shares Some New INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Details

Roland Emmerich recently chatted with Empire about the much anticipated sequel, Independence Day 2. He tells them, that even though he wants to make two sequels, he won't film them back-to-back. A third will rely on the outcome of the second.

Ever since the 1996 film, Independence Day a summer blockbuster, you just knew, that one day in the future, there would be a sequel. But, nobody expected it to take 20th Century Fox this long to get Independence Day 2 off the ground. But, the release date, July 3, 2015, appears to be too optimistic, according to director Roland Emmerich.
“You have to set a release date otherwise another film moves into it, [but] Independence Day is my next movie, if I get the right script. I should get the script pretty soon, then I’ll try to get it into good shape for one or two months, and if that happens, we’ll announce it and start production.”

Which actually might be a good thing, as earlier this week Paramount announced that Alan Taylor's Terminator film will also be released on July 1st, 2015.

Whenever Independence Day 2 does come out, don't count on a third being filmed back-to-back. A movie that many large budget planned-trilogies have used to effectively cut costs. Roland tells Empire:
“We’ll only do the first part, because we want to have the audience decide if they want to see the second, otherwise it feels arrogant. But I’m pretty confident, with the right script…”

So, if audiences don't want an unfinished cliffhanger, they had better fill those theaters. While nostalgia for the original will generated a solid opening weekend, a third will rest upon the shoulders of the filmmaker. Anything resembling the quality of the original will probably warrant some solid feedback, which in turn will produce a box office winner.

As for story details, Rolland says:
“It’s a parallel history. Humans rebuild whatever they have – bigger, newer, shinier – and then they forget. Maybe, 20 years later, [the aliens are] never coming back…

“We’ve created a mythology around these aliens, which is really cool. You have to create a mythology because people want to see a bigger picture.”

So, more backstory on the aliens? Okay, I guess that would be okay. Although, I do kind of like the mystery of that species. Oh, and this time around don't expect Jeff Goldblum to save the day with one of his super duper computer viruses. Emmerich was asked about that, and replied, “They won’t fall for that again.”

One of the greatest movie speeches of all time

One of the biggest box office hits of all time delivers the ultimate encounter when mysterious and powerful aliens launch an all-out invasion against the human race. The spectacle begins when massive spaceships appear in Earth's skies. But wonder turns to terror as the ships blast destructive beams of fire down on cities all over the planet. Now the world's only hope lies with a determinded band of survivors, uniting for one last strike against the invaders - before it's the end of all mankind.

You know what would MAKE this movie?

If randy quaids character ended up somehow alive.

Just make hime the central protagonist, a cameo of jeff goldblum, and some...I dunno channing tatum or that twatlight douche.
Also, a one-legged retarded midget who lost a wiener in a weed-trimmer accident wouldn't trade places with trudy.
Then- maybe in the post apocalyptic ID4 world they made bill pullman president for life and he's mad with power.

It's funny how everyone who say "it's a shit film!" Are probably praised it when it first came out and loved it. I know these people would have been younger then and had simpler tastes but no need to slate it because your tastes have matured.
I loved it when it came out and now my taste in movies have matured I still think its pretty decent. it's on my top 50 movie to show my kids to teach them about culture.

I wonder of Emmerich, Bay, and Snyder are all secretly hive-minded......

Anyhow, Another pointless sequel being made like 20 years later. What's the point?

Owning this piece of shit should be a crime, without a doubt the most badly contrived movie ever to have box office success. He can make as many as he wants, I wouldn't sit through any of them.

And yeah, I remember a lot of people getting hyped for this stupid film when it came out and the boost it got from having the Star Wars special edition trailer at the beginning.

I also remember a lot of people realizing how stupid the movie was on repeat viewing once they bought the DVD. The nonsensical Aliens travelling light years to invade simply blowing up every major city and then sitting around enjoying the view from their ships instead of doing any actual invading. The ridiculous notion that a ex-NASA cable-guy can make his Macbook deliver a virus to an alien computer in the age when you couldn't get a Mac to talk to a PC! The 1950's version of an alien ship outrunning a 1997 version X?. Will Smith being strong enough to punch an alien wearing a containment suit and knock him out...? Random survivors in a caravan park getting a speech from the president somehow managing to have more than enough people trained in how to fly a fighter jet to make a squad for the final battle. Africans taking down motherships with nothing but spears and shields as their weapons????

God this film was embarrassing to sit thorough and listening to anyone trying to defend it just reminds me how dumb people can really swallow their entertainment.

One of those movies you can watch every few weeks it doesn't need a sequel.

I can see where a sequel would go but there's no need.

I was in the 6th grade when Independence day came out. At the time I thought it was a pretty bad ass action film. The more you watch and think about it, the more you realize it has a lot of faults. But who gives a damn? It's a movie for funk sake. Just sit back and enjoy the white house being blown to shit. And be happy they decided to go with the Empire state building and not the twin towers or this movie would be banned from existance.
beane2099
beane2099 - 9/19/2013, 4:32 AM
ID4 is a lesson in great marketing. The marketing campaign for this was amazing. When you saw the White House blow up (which wasn't a regular site in the 90's) it was mind blowing. Each month you got to see a little but more. Later on we saw F-16's fighting space ships AND Will Smith. By the time July came you HAD to see this movie. My friends and I were there opening night (as was pretty much everyone else). Pretend you hated it from the beginning all you want but when you walked out of the theater that summer you were pretty entertained.

Now do I think it's a good movie? Yes and no. It has plot holes the size of Texas, bizarre leaps in logic (computer virus), some useless annoying characters, and some awful dialogue. But it definitely had an impact on pop culture (it made the cover of Time Magazine for God's sake). And teenage beane2099 enjoyed the hell out of it. So it did it's job. In those respects I think it was a good movie. You can come in with 20/20 hindsight and trash it all you want (seriously, go to town) but at the very least, ya gotta respect it.

As I recall, Independence Day was scripted in about 2 weeks. With the tone he is painting and also how films have changed since, I think this will be a stinker.

CBM.COM: Age of Haters!

Yes, all the crap about this move is true, but its a movie. Not a documentary about what would happen if aliens invaded. It didn't make any less sense than the best cbm's. Even the dark knight and the avengers have been rippped to shreds, but they are still fun as hell to watch. That's what's important afterall. That's all the general audience really wants. Why do u think the Transformers films or iron man 3 made a ton of money? Are they simple and stupid? yes... Are they fun ass action fests? Hell yea! You "high brow" cbm fans(oxymoronic, I know) think people are dumb for enjoying these movies, but really I feel sorry for you for not being able to...

Independence Day was always a dumb movie. If you like visuals without a care about the script or acting, I'm sure it was great. Otherwise, it was pretty ridiculously stupid.

And no, I didn't like the movie when it first came out. I've always felt this way about it.

Despite that, I'll still probably watch the sequel. :P I can't help but be curious! Whether I'll finish watching it or not is the question. :)

The core idea is already flawed as hell. I can already hear Honest Trailers and others having fun with it.

20 years later Earth forgets and assumes the Aliens aren't coming back?

It's been only 13 years since 9/11 and no one seems to have even begun to have forgotten. And these guys think 20 little years would make Earth forget or let its guard down after ID4?

1st you have a Planet full of people with psychological problems in the aftermath. After such an incident the culture of Earth would be drastically changed. We would have a phenomenon of mass paranoia and mental depression across the planet. Hundreds of Millions would suffer from PTSD. Not simply because of the Alien attack but from outbreaks of riots and total lawlessness that would spread from a lack of Governments, Military and Law enforcement. There would be millions of suicides and millions reduced to insanity and drug and alcohol use would be even worse than now as people use them to cope.

People born afterward would be shaped in many ways by a different perspective of reality than we have.

Bunkers would be everywhere.

Every politician would add promises of a better plan to defend ourselves from Aliens to their list of promises.

Such an incident would change religions and possible create new ones. Every time we would have a Quake people would fear it was the rumble of an attack somewhere.

Then you have the cleanup and rebuilding. At the end of ID4 we had giant ships as large as Cities crashing into the Earth. Not only would we have to clean up our cities and rebuild but we would have those to contend with. And 13 years later we still haven't rebuilt towers at ground zero.

Emmerich said "They won't fall for that again". Why? All the Aliens in the ship were destroyed so how would other Aliens elsewhere even know about the virus?

The premise is so greatly flawed its like it has been attacked by a virus as well.

But considering the enormous amount of money Shit-Films made in 2013 maybe making films that suck is the right thing to do after all. Why even try to make a film good when Iron Man 3 makes 1.3 Billion?

Yes movies like Independance Day & Armageddon are dumb but they are a HUGE amount of fun! Which is the whole point of movies.

PS Iron Man 3 was an enjoyable film.

PPS Man of Steel was dumb & boring.

My dad liked this movie when it came out. I never cared for it. Literally every character is overplayed and unbearable for me to watch. Pullman as President is sappy. Quaid is ridiculous. Will is too arrogant. Even a hotshot pilot would sh*t himself if Aliens invaded. Goldblum does his usual autistic impression, again.

Aliens with advanced technology, masters of interstellar travel, fall victim to a 1990's earth computer virus!!! WTF. Sneaking inside the mothership was cool, but to download a virus... did they still have a USB 1.0 port just in case an alien wanted to access his old college porn collection. Will the sequel have a wif-fi transmitted virus? And of course those same adavanced aliens would want all their ships linked to a single ship so potentially one well placed attack disables all your forces leaving you even more defenseless... Apparently Whedon liked that idea too.. since it was used in the Avengers.

This movie was so cheesy. Will and Goldblum together was funny though... it's only saving grace.

When was the last time Earth lost to aliens? Aren't these movies like the Titanic? Predictable outcome. Except that Earth would never win against an Alien invasion. The power source required for interstellar travel alone could be used to obliterate us. We barely land troops on foreign soil to win wars anymore. So why would aliens land troops on earth to fight 7 billion people? They'd annihilate us using our own tactics; air superiority. We'd be vaporized from space. An Alien invasion would go something like this: We'd detect something in space moving towards Earth. Flash of light. Humans seize to exist. End. Oddly, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is the most realistic when it comes to this.

Spare us the sequels.

@bs77 - well said, sir! Like u said, though, no one would ever make a true to life alien invasion flick because it'd be 5 minutes long... Lol

They are all just an inaccurate as the next, so there's no point in nitpicking.
Either its something ur interested in seeing, or its not. I can understand that. But to sit there and say that the film sucks for things that are just staples of the genre is just plain silly and self serving...

As far ast the sequel, I think that Mandeth and fettastic hit the nail on the head. If the world just rebuilds and goes on about its business, that will be dumb as hell... I'm interested in seen how this film develops...

I was young when ID4 came out, so I loved it. I had the toy alien ship that made noises and lit up, and the action figure alien with the head that split open to reveal the mini alien inside. Sure, the movie doesn't really hold up these days, but it was a fun movie.

And don't expect Will Smith to show up for the sequel unless he can get another chance to shove his son down our throats. Your son is NOT a superstar, Will, DEAL WITH IT!!

Wasn't it stated when the serious ID4 sequel topics came up Smith wasn't coming back?

Personally, I'd think it a mistake to not have CPT Steve back, but Smith's been phoning in some serious crapfests lately.
