Screenwriter Frank Darabont Discusses His Take On GODZILLA

The Walking Dead's Frank Darabont, who was recently hired to give a final rewrite to Legendary Pictures' Godzilla reboot, talks about his take on the iconic monster, saying that it is not campy and that the creature should be "a terrifying force of nature".

Recently, Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead, The Shawshank Redemption) was hired to write the final draft for Legendary Pictures' Godzilla reboot, which is currently targeting a March production start date. Now, in an interview with io9, he discusses his take on Godzilla, as well as what attracted him to the legendary monster. Darabont says that this version will not be campy, which goes along with prior comments of the film being more realistic/contemporary. "What I found very interesting about Godzilla is that he started off definitely as a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And some of the atom bomb testing we were doing in the South Pacific in the subsequent years. The giant terrifying force of nature that comes and stomps the shit out of your city, that was Godzilla. Filtered through the very fanciful imaginations of the Japanese perception. And then he became Clifford the Big Red Dog in the subsequent films. He became the mascot of Japan, he became the protector of Japan. Another big ugly monster would show up and he would fight that monster to protect Japan. Which I never really quite understood, the shift.

"What we're trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy. We're kind of taking a cool new look at it. But with a lot of tradition in the first film. We want this to be a terrifying force of nature. And what was really cool, for me, is there was a very compelling human drama that I got to weave into it. It's not that cliched, thinly disguised romance or bromance, or whatever. It's different, it's a different set of circumstances than you're used to seeing. And that's tremendously exciting as a writer when you're asked to do something else."
Additionally, Darabont confirms that he's looking to connect Godzilla to a contemporary issue, "but I'm not going to give it away."

Godzilla is currently in the casting phase, with Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson reportedly being the frontrunner for the lead role. Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters), the film is set to hit theaters May 16th, 2014 in 3D.

I am all about Frank Darabont adding his touch to this movie. I just hope they get to film it. I've been in the Godzilla army for a long time. Been waiting for a big budget outing of the Big G (cause I don't count whatever that was in 1998 with the velocizillas).

Guarantee it's more heavy handed Avatar esque environmental propaganda. Hollywood loves that hippie crap.

I need to see what he's going to look like. There's no way there going to make him look like the traditional rubber gumby looking Godzilla I'm hoping, and that will definitely piss off a lot of people.

Sounds like they'll probably ties Godzilla's origins in with global warming instead of the atomic bomb.

"I hope they DONT bloody make him some kinda of protector of humans by helping them fight another monster..."

There are reportedly other monsters in the film for Godzilla to fight, but whether they're classic Toho monsters or new creations remains to be seem. However, Godzilla hasn't always fought other monsters to protect mankind. That came later in the 70s films. Sometimes, Godzilla fights other monsters simply because they're there and Tokyo isn't big enough for the both of them. Sometimes, the other monsters are a threat to Godzilla personally or a threat to the world in general and Godzilla has to protect his turf. If that happens to benefit mankind, it is often just a happy coincidence.

Whoever wins, we lose. If Godzilla kills the other monster, we still have to deal with Godzilla.

All I know is there better be some freakin' nuclear breath attacks from Godzilla. That was the best part about him besides the fact he was almost indestructible.

I hope the producers get their shit together and get this movie done!

SN: There was a design I saw for Godzilla awhile back that looked great. It looked like a mix of an Alligator and the T-Rex from Jurassic Park. Can anyone find that pic for me?

I hate to say it but this is basically what they were saying before the Matthew Broderick Godzilla. "We're taking it a more realistic direction." "We see Godzilla as a force of nature."

I hope it turns out better.

Perfect idea Godzilla as a metaphor for the destructive force of nature. Is that what we will get? Time will tell. If the lawsuits don't screw it all up.

Darabont brings death in a way Whedon could only daydream of.., during a college production of Hamlet in the park where he's forced to play.., I give up, Whedon blows.., Darabont on this rewrite looks and sounds promising! We'll see. One thing Darabont can do in give an awesome, non-vote getting, true ending to a piece. After his films are done you marinate with them. He's a filmmaker. When anyone questions TWD and his dimissal.., I say try to get one of those useless online Entertainment Law degrees. Those cokeheads need your money.

He should be an animal (a smart animal, but an animal nonetheless). Have him tear up the city and then become territorial about protecting it. Then have another monster and have them fight over the territory. Thus, Godzilla is helping people only indirectly and isn't some big goofy mascot, but at the same time you can root for him.
