Roberto Orci No Longer Helming STAR TREK 3; Edgar Wright Beaming Up As Director?

Remember how disappointed we all were to learn that Paramount were considering replacing J.J. Abrams with the guy who wrote The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Transformers as director for Star Trek 3? Good news tonight as he's out, and Ant-Man's Edgar Wright may be in...

Deadline reports that Roberto Orci is no longer attached to direct Star Trek 3. He was rumoured for the job shortly after it became clear that J.J. Abrams would be too busy with Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens to return and get the movie out in time to coincide with the franchise's 50th anniversary in 2016. It's not clear why he'll no longer helm the threequel, but Orci is set to remain a producer so there may not be any drama there to speak of. The writer recently split with longtime partner Alex Kurtzman (they teamed up to butcher a number of franchises, including The Amazing Spider-Man 2), and had passed on directing the Power Rangers reboot to focus on Star Trek 3 apparently. Regardless, he's out and Edgar Wright is said to be on the shortlist to replace him...

Glad Orci's out. Not glad Wright is in. Eh, oh well, Trek blows anyway. Star Wars is the shit, Trek just is shit.

Kicking that 9/11-truthing hack off the film is great news. Courting Edgar Wright to direct is even better.

Good, Trek 3 was some kinda warped ego trip for Orci. Wright is much more fitting, but a small part of me would hate for him to take this.

Hehe "small part of me". I'm here all week folks.

You mean the guy who wrote Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, the two movies you're implicitly praising while lamenting Abrams' departure?

Look I don't like Orci either but the childish need to bitch about Amazing Spider-Man 2 in every quasi-related article is annoying.

According to Devin Faraci, this is what the plot was going to be under Orci:

"...my sources tell me that the script Orci was working on saw the Enterprise, the Vulcans and a new alien race competing to get a time travel device. The Vulcans want to go back and stop the destruction of their planet, and the time travel schtick is what would allow Chris Pine and William Shatner to share the screen. Is that still going to be the plot of the movie - a MacGuffin that could wipe out the previous two films?"

That sounds awful, but who knows if some of it will stay in place when the new director takes the reins.

Really hope this is true, Wright can hopefully add a dose of pulpy fun to the new film.

Also still hope Shatter makes an appearance.

Edgar please!!!! Orci shouldn't have been given such a huge film as his rookie debut. Maybe te studio realized this. And his writing is suspect at times

Pretty good choice. The World's End was great (yes am of the minority opinion that it was the best of the Cornetto trilogy). Hopefully we can get a moral message back in Trek while we're at it. Still, I won't get my hopes too high as long as this movie occurs in the Abramsverse.

Kurtzman & Orci should be tried for Crimes Against Humanity.

Edgar Wright knows better than wade into that quagmire. But maybe Simon can talk him into it...

@SuperheroFan96 I actually REALLY enjoy the first Trek, and everything after the Khan reveal in Into Darkness is just absolute garbage. Edgar Wright taking over Trek 3 could save the franchise, IMO.

@CaptainObvious, No better way to celebrate 50 years of Star Trek than with rebooting the reboot, amirite???

No! Not Edgar Wright! I don't want to wait a decade for him to tinker with his vision only to get annoyed the studio was getting tired of waiting and then quit.

Very mixed bag as a writer (alongside Kurtzman), their work usually falls under either the "pretty good with quite a lot of stupid stuff" or "rubbish but with a few cool moments". I think they've done a pretty good job on Star Trek so far, but I'm glad Orci isn't directing this anymore, it's just too big a film for anyone's directorial debut - I mean, it'd be difficult enough just directing a Star Trek movie as a newbie, but directing the third installment in a pretty well received reboot of the series would make it nearly impossible to get right.

As for Edgar Wright... It could be great to see him get this gig, but I wonder how he'd manage to adhere to the tone established by Abrams when he's known for his own very distinctive style; the same style that apparently caused him to quit the Ant-Man project he'd dedicated like 10 years to, when told he'd have to alter it to fit into a previously established universe. I know he directed a very small segment in Star Trek Into Darkness, which might indicate an ability to mesh with this version of Star Trek, but I'm still not entirely convinced it'll work out.
