Following another strong day at the worldwide box office on Monday, it's now been confirmed that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has passed Iron Man 3 at the worldwide box office to become the twelfth biggest movie of all-time. The current total for the Rian Johnson helmed release is $1,215.3 billion. $574.5 million of that came from North America while $640.8 million was earned internationally.
As of right now, The Last Jedi is running 34% behind The Force Awakens and 32% ahead of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That's not a bad result by any means but the tepid response in China (it's made only $31 million there) is a definite disappointment. For whatever reason, moviegoers there simply aren't interested. On the plus side, it slightly overperformed this past weekend overseas with $65.9 million.
It's still not quite clear how high The Last Jedi will go but the movie is a hit no matter how much some angry fans would like to write it off as a flop because they weren't happy with the creative decisions made by Johnson. The Force Awakens was a huge event so it was probably always going to be the biggest of the new trilogy from a financial standpoint. How many times have you watched the sequel?
