Since purchasing LucasFilm back in 2012, The Walt Disney Company have been committed to exploring George Lucas' Star Wars universe through all sorts of mediums. Naturally, the focal point of this endeavour has been the upcoming movie sequels (starting with JJ Abrams' The Force Awakens) but there have always been other projects in play too. One such project is Disney XD's Star Wars Rebels, which debuted back in October to largely positive fan reception. It appears the channel is now going ahead with plans to re-tell the main saga - in LEGO form.
The new series, titled Star Wars: Droid Tales, will follow C3P0 and R2-D2, as they reminisce about their old adventures. Initially set after Return Of The Jedi, an accidental kidnapping sets in motion a whole new chain of events, which sends the droids on a whole new adventure. The subsequent reapperance of several familiar faces prompts a re-telling of the original saga in chronological order - beginning with The Phantom Menace. Much like the hugely popular 'LEGO Star Wars' video game series, the show will deliver a humorous take on the Star Wars universe.
In a statement, the Vice President of Licensing and Entertainment for The LEGO Group, Jill Wilfert, had this to say:
"Since we introduced our first LEGO Star Wars set in 1999, we have seen and heard from countless Star Wars fans who have used LEGO bricks to tell their own version of this timeless story, re-enacting favorite scenes and imagining new story lines. LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales gives us an opportunity to share highlights of the Star Wars story with a sense of humor and excitement that can only be conveyed through the LEGO brick, and will be a fun resource for families as they gear up for the next movie."
Star Wars: Droid Tales will be a limited series, comprised of five animated specials. Due to be released later in the year, the series will build up to the much-anticipated arrival of The Force Awakens in cinemas on December 18th.
What do you guys think of the news? The thought of telling the saga from the droids' perspectives is an interesting one. At least, David Fincher thought so anyway. After Star Wars Rebels, are you excited to hear about another DisneyXD Star Wars adaptation? It's worth noting this does appear to be aimed at a younger demographic.
