J.J. Abrams On His Desire For Secrecy And STAR WARS Scrutiny

"[STAR WARS has] always been a more open, fan-engaged universe than I've been used to, there'll be some sort of compromise...there's a purity in not knowing every little thing [about a story ahead of time]."

J.J. Abrams has a well known desire to keep details on his projects top secret. Sometimes that works in his favor and sometimes it creates incredible levels of fan expectations that are neigh impossible to meet. In look at Star Wars: Episode VII and the already high fan expectations, Abrams admits that it will be tough to keep such high levels of secrecy throughout production of the project. Abrams told The Daily Telegraph [via Joblo], "[STAR WARS has] always been a more open, fan-engaged universe than I've been used to, there'll be some sort of compromise...there's a purity in not knowing every little thing [about a story ahead of time]. We're living in a moment of instant information and a sense of entitlement to that information. I think it's nice to remember that there's nothing wrong with a sense of anticipation."

But there's still, what seems to be extreme cautionary measures in place to make sure no details leak out before their time. "My office… I’m working on the Star Wars script today and the people in my office have covered up all my windows with black paper. I guess they wanted to make sure no one could see what I was doing," said Abrams. "It seems rather extreme," he concluded.

Do you think keeping details on Episode VII ultra-secret will work for or against the highly anticipated sci-fi epic?

Normally for sci-fi/comic movies I love knowing the spoilers. But for Star Wars i'd rather be completely surprised.

I agree with Abrams. I like that someone isn't caving to the internet's desire to know everything instantly. He seems like a really new school director with some old school ideology. I hope he pulls through

Covering the windows? Sounds awesome to me. When STAR WARS, Indiana Jones, E.T. and the like came out, I didnt know shit about the film other then what the trailer provided.

Bravado - "Well, the Khan secrecy was pointless and stupid, but I had much bigger issues with the last Star Trek movie. A Trek film and script devoid of social relevance isn't Trek. It's Die Hard In Space or something."

Its hard to believe the 60s TV series was and is more ground breaking than the recent films.

I don't know why, but it seems to me that JJ Abrams uses "secrecy" as a gimmick instead of honestly. He's always going on and on about how secret everything is, but it doesn't seem more secret than any other major production.

I agree with Abrams. I used to want to know every single detail about a cbm or hot scifi film before its release. I realized that it that it felt like i'd already seen the film upon first viewing in the theater. What a waste. It's like going through your parents room before christmas!

Could you imagine if EVERYONE knew that Vader was Luke's father before it ESB came out in theaters? Man that would've such a drag.

Sometimes less is more. And even though I would like to know who the main characters and villains are going to be, I don't mind being left out for everything else.

The only guideline he has to follow is 'The Empire Strikes Back' that style of suspense and art-direction.. And a guest appearance by Daft Punk in stormtroopers outfits..

#1 Abrams needs to stop posing in pictures like he's some elite entertainment film making genius. That's a group with Nolan, Spielberg, and a few others. Abrams is in the League of Michael Bay.

#2 He needs to stop lecturing on making good films. Abrams has yet to create one great or classic film.

#3 Secrecy didn't stop Into Darkness from being a worse Star Trek than Nemesis and Final Frontier.
He's just a visionless filmmaker who uses stats, focus groups, and screenings to tell him what movie he'll make.

#4 Into Darkness was in the same League as Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones, only with more puns and bigger names.
That is what Star Wars 7 will be. Crap with big names.

@ Newbus: "Its hard to believe the 60s TV series was and is more ground breaking than the recent films."

Assuming you're actually serious...

It was the 60s. The bridge crew contained a representative from every race (in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement), both genders (at a time when a female editor on the show had to use her initials rather than her name), and a lot of major nationalities (in the middle of the Cold War).

Into Darkness is a generic thrill ride with no pretensions to doing or saying anything except "Heh heh, like that explosion? Good, give us your money."

@ManDeth Worse than Nemesis and Final Frontier? Are you serious. I hope you guys get something like Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, seriously I thought Star Wars fans were bad.

Such strange and odd commenters. Any intellectual property with a long and historied fanbase should be thankful to have someone like JJ on their projects.

@Melkaticox I never got to read the books with the Solo and Skywalker kids. Although I would like to see them tackle a female lead.

JJ Abrams only gimmick is keeping a ridiculous level of secrecy around his projects. It's nothing more than that...a gimmick. It backfired horribly on him with Star Trek Into Darkness, so hopefully he learns a thing or two from that. Secrecy and plot twists aren't the things that make a movie. He's somewhat good with the plot and the twists and the secrecy, but seriously bad with everything else. I'm far from convinced that he's going to do a good job with Star Wars.

Seems like a simple concept: If he has come up with something completely awesome, being so secretive should work in his favor. If he has come up with something just good, then being so secretive will lead to a major let down. Either way, I can't wait for this!

Secrecy is all well and good if the payoff is worth it. If we end up with a shit storm after multiple years of secrecy then it becomes a what was the point of all this secrecy if it was just going to suck?

Films need more secrecy. A lot of films these days have all the plot details and twists revealed months before it's even released and it's really irritating.

@JediPhilospher In JJ's defense, he was only on Lost for the first three seasons (which I heard were the best ones), and I loved Cloverfield tbh. I can understand why a lot of people can't watch because the shaky cam made them sick.
