Lucasfilm Reveals Plan to Bridge Gap to the Force Awakens with 20 New Books

Since Disney bought Lucasfilm and we were told to throw out what we knew about the Star Wars expanded universe, everyone knew that a total ret-con was coming and it looks like we will get a look at those new stories sooner than we thought. Lucasfilm has announced via Entertainment Weekly that they plan to release at least 20 new books that will give fans a look at what was going on in the 32 years between the Return of the Jedi and the Force Awakens. These books will range from novels intended for adults to storybooks and sticker books intended for young children (and their parents, of course). These stories will in no way follow the previously released "expanded universe" of Star Wars stories that were discarded once Disney bought the franchise.

The Force Awakens is an extraordinarily, heavily guarded storyline. To track it, a lot of top-secret meetings were happening up in San Francisco as we worked through this program,” says Andrew Sugerman, executive vice president of Disney Publishing Worldwide. The company is managing the release through its own imprints as well as at least seven outside companies, among them sci-fi publisher Del Rey, DK, and Marvel Comics.

Multiple publishers will release the books and most storyline information is still being kept under tight security in preparation for the major film release of the Force Awakens. Some already confirmed titles and storylines include Star Wars: Aftermath, which will probably deal with what happened directly following ROTJ, Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens, which will be released by Marvel Comics, as well as Star Wars: Ships of the Galaxy, which will be a technical manual for Star Wars vehicles. The goal is not only to indulge Star Wars fans but to also attract the YA generation of readers to the new movies.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to this or is it too much Star Wars already??

So the 100plus books I've read are no longer canon so the next 100 books I read will be.... until the next re-boot in 20 years anyway.....

Solid point. Sorry if it was misleading.

I consider myself a pretty big Star Wars fan, but I do have to admit that most of the books were just generic sci-fi stories. I did enjoy Shadows of the Empire, though. I remember when I was a kid they made Shadows of the Empire into a huge event, it got a video game, toy line, comic book, everything. I'm still hoping for them to make a Shadows of the Empire movie, no matter how unlikely that is now that Disney bought the franchise.

That's my only problem with this is that sense of inevitability that in another 25 years, this 'new' canon will also be rendered obsolete. I'm totally okay with throwing out much of the old EU, as a lot of it was terrible, but if we're just going to do the same thing again later, it's like what's the point?

How do you know? Do you know exactly what will happen 25 years from now? It's entirely possible that Disney, or whoever could own the rights at that time, might decide to make a NEW new canon.

Why not? Sega has already tried rebooting Sonic. Cartoon Network is rebooting Powerpuff Girls. Look at all the movie franchises that have been rebooted over and over again. It's happened once, Star Wars comics/novels/video games can certainly be wiped from the slate for a second time.

Sonic 06 was intended to soft reboot the franchise, (hence it's actual name of just Sonic the Hedgehog) but development was rushed and the game was shit so they made the ending cancel the game out of the timeline regardless. It's a failed reboot, but it's a series Sega originally wanted to reboot the franchise with. I guarantee you if the game was a success, they would have called the next game Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

And literally every source I've seen concerning the new PPG show has called it a reboot. It may be a continuation of the original show, inspired by the original show, but it is a reboot nonetheless because they're bringing it back as it was without any noticeable change in story or characters besides the design.

None of this has to do with Star Wars, whose EU continuity is being flung out the window for a new one. If it happened once, it can certainly happen again.
