STAR WARS: Lucasfilm's Movie Plans May Have Taken Another Step Back After Key Executive Steps Down

It's coming up to three years since we last had a Star Wars movie, but Lucasfilm's live-action plans may have taken a step back with the news that a key executive has stepped down. Read on for details...

The Skywalker Saga concluded with 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and we haven't seen a single movie from Lucasfilm since. The pandemic can take at least part of the blame for that, of course, but as we head into 2023, there's not a single project that appears even close to becoming a reality.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins once looked set to helm Rogue Squadron, though that's seemingly fallen apart - probably due to "creative differences" - even after a flashy hype video was shot for Disney's Investor Day in 2020.

Since then, we've heard about projects from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi, but neither is heading our way imminently. For whatever reason, Lucasfilm appears unable to crack this franchise on the big screen after the mixed response to the sequel trilogy and Solo: A Star Wars Story, though the studio continues to find success on TV.

Disney+ TV shows like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor have all been hits, but any movie plans have just been dealt yet another blow.

According to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), Michelle Rejwan is leaving her post as SVP Live Action Development & Production at Lucasfilm. She will transition back to being a full-time producer and will remain at Lucasfilm, but this suggests the studio is looking for someone new to take charge of future live-action plans.

On the one hand, this could be a good sign that Lucasfilm is looking to shake things up and start developing a proper slate of Star Wars movies. Alternatively, this may be a step back for any of the projects that are in the early stages of development, creating an even longer wait for fans hoping to visit this Galaxy Far, Far Away on the big screen again.

Star Wars Celebration and D23 have been and gone, so we don't anticipate any solid updates this year. As always, though, you'll want to keep checking SFFGazette.com for the latest updates!
