The Star Wars saga is rife with long-standing traditions, such as a character losing an arm, someone having a bad feeling a this and the Wilhelm scream. The most recent installment in the saga, The Last Jedi was seemingly without most of these traditions.
If not for clarification by the director that it was apparently beeped and booped by BB-8, it would be without an "I've got a bad feeling about this" line While it has mostly gone unnoticed, it does feature the loss of an arm; After Snoke's bisection, his severed arm is shown momentarily. However, like Rogue One, Episode VIII doesn't feature the classic Wilhelm scream, Matthew Wood, the supervising spound editor has revealed that they're officially retiring the shriek from upcoming Star Wars films:
In this movie, we decided to move from the Wilhelm scream. We’re letting the past die, as Kylo Ren says.
We’ve started another scream that we like, it’s actually been in this film and Rogue One, and some other films that are not Star Wars-related. But it’s our own little calling card.
And when pressed for more information on the new sound effect, like its placement in the movies or what they've dubbed it, Wood said:
It would reveal too much, but in due time it will be revealed. I’ll let it gestate in a few more films before we start talking about what it is.
Thought most will remain indifferent; This may perturb some fans, that don't subscribe to the villain's mentality, as the sound effect has featured in every Star Wars movie all the way up to The Force Awakens, as well as over 400 other movies, and it looks like we're going to be without it from now on. Star Wars is evolving, do you like the direction it's taking?
