@sKeemAn - I'm pretty sure someone at Disney is looking at the overwhemingly positive reaction to 5 minutes of Vader in this movie and going "hmmmm..."

I love this scene so much but I also find myself agreeing with the few who say it makes Vader seem oddly tempered in IV. He has no problem cutting through Rebels to get the plans but then his troopers do it for him in IV?

Also, man, does that lightsaber fight between Vader and Kenobi look silly these days. gotta forgive some stuff and accept it I guess.

@MattBellissimo - I just try to chalk it up to it being the late 70's and the ideas and choreography weren't as fully developed as they are now. It always bugged me how clumsy Vader seemed to be with the lightsaber in the original trilogy.

@MattBellissimo - ..I think Vader was scared of Obi 1...remember the last time they fought....Darth got cut in half so I would fight caution with the old man myself!

@MattBellissimo - I think during that time they made ANH, they did not have the choreography with the lightsaber they do today. Plus i get the feeling Vader was a little fearful of Obi Wan, I mean he did cut him in half.

@MattBellissimo - Vader's much calmer temper could be chalked up to the fact it took him a while to catch the Tantive IV - days rather than the minutes suggested by the filmmakers. The hunt would have cleared his head, and knowing he was going to win made him less amped up at the beginning of ANH.

@MattBellissimo - Have you ever seen the Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn? That movie is from the late 30's and has an AMAZING sword fight at the end between Robin Hood and Sir Guy of Gisbon. Now, it helped that Flynn and Basil Rathbone were both fencers, and they used metal swords. You can find it on YouTube. It's fast and furious. They utilize objects in the environment in the fight as well. I can't think of a sword duel in American cinema that even comes close until, like, the 90's. Kind of amazing we took that long to best it.

If you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch.

@sKeemAn - I'm kinda thinking now that Vader's playing down to Kenobi's diminished level of ability, just toying with him to some extent. His "your powers are weak old man" line really sells it IMO.

I'm now more convinced than ever that that Darth Vader hallway scene was tacked on at the last minute. Its very clear in Ep IV that Leah's ship INTERCEPTED the plans in a transmission . not that they were passed down a hallway. If you watch the final scenes, When they cut to the next scene which is the one with Leah the tone is completely different - it's calm and positive. You would never think that the guy handing Leah the floppy disk just witnessed a nightmarish slaughter a minute earlier where they barely escaped with their lives. and the way that Vader scene is shot i think it's pretty clear that it's a hastily done reshoot without much of a set to work with. After seeing the first cut someone probably said that we A) need one last obstacle to close the movie on, and/or B) we didn't do enough with Vader and I think fans are going to be pissed and say it was a bait and switch ala episode 3. So let's kill 2 birds with one stone and add on a floppy disk hot potato scene. The guy that gives the disk to Leah - don't know if that's captain Antilles or just somebody else- even inquisitively says "what is it that they sent?" not "what is it that they shoved to me through a half open door while they were being slaughtered?" And Leah is calmly chilling on the bridge. There's no sense of urgency at all. So I think the original intention was Leah's ship is not at the battle and the rebels transmitted the plans to Leah's ship as indicated. Then the scene where Darth Vader says prepare a boarding party is supposed to close out the movie which would then lead into episode 4.

Theres also major continuity error that adding that Darth Vader hallway seen creates hallway scene creates. In Ep IV Darth Vader boards Leah's ship for two reasons - 1. to look for the plants and 2. to kidnap Leah because he suspects that she is part of the rebel alliance and thinks that she might be able to lead them to the hidden rebel base. Leah's ship is not full of rebel pilots. It's full of Alderon pilots that may or may not know that Leah is even part of the rebellion. Vader chokes captain Antilles because he's looking for the plans but Vader doesn't even suspect that anybody besides Leah on board would know where the hidden base is. Otherwise he would've kidnapped and tortured the pilots on board and they would have been much easier to get the plans out of then Leah was. So having Leahs ship at the battle and having Vader know for a fact that everybody on board that ship is part of the rebellion messes that entire opening scene from a new hope. Now Vader looks like a moron for killing everyone on board and only taking Leah. If You take that ONE hallway seen out and you put Leah out in the middle of space on the diplomatic mission that they said she was on (to find Obi-Wan Kenobi and bring him to Alderan) and The rebels transmit the plans from the battle to her ship way out in space. Then it makes sense again. Then Vaters ship tracks down Leah's ship and boards it and that's the beginning of a new hope.
Jimmy Smits even says in Rogue One that hes going to send Leah to find ObiWan .. THAT'S her mission. She's not supposed to be at the battle. But they put her there at the last minute to tack on this Darth Vader fan service scene and its screws a lot of stuff up.
