UPDATED: Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Still Strong With $19.2M For Saturday!

Studio must be really happy right now, as they should...Rupert Wyatt's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is still overperforming with a almost no drop from Friday to Saturday and it's heading to a $53M-55M for the weekend.

UPDATE: Film opened with estimated $54M over the weekend, plus it added another $23.4M internationally:

"Fueled by great word of mouth, 20th Century Fox's Rise of the Planet of the Apes opened to $54 million at the domestic box office—$20 million more than the best forecast. Overseas, the prequel also exceeded expectations, grossing a stellar $23.4 million from 25 territories, including only four major markets, Australia, Spain, Russia and Taiwan, where it came in No. 1."

Rupert Wyatt's latest film Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes starring James Franco, Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis playing Caesar, opened stronger than expected on Friday with $19 million. Film is getting good buzz from most of the critics, word of mouth should help its weekend gross. Now, it seems that APES collected another $19.2M on Saturday, and it's expected to make between $53M-55M for the weekend. From The Hollywood Reporter:

"Moviegoers continued to flock to 20th Century Fox's Rise of the Planet of the Apes on Saturday, guaranteeing a better-than-expected opening of $53 million at the domestic box office. Rise of the Apes is exceeding all expectations, and breathes new life into the cult sci-fi franchise."

Film had a reported budget of $93 million, which is not a lot when you look at Thor and Green Lantern's budget, and almost every big film this year was playing in 3D. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes can be compared to another FOX's prequel of this summer, X-Men: First Class, which was also only in 2D and it made $55M in its first weekend. Stay tuned for actual numbers.

@JLA2014 - Actually Captain America is doing just fine especially for this period of the year. With 15 days of release it's at $133 million, at the same period Thor had made $134 million and X:men:FC had made $111 million.

So even with a more competitive release schedule, it's tracking higher than X-Men:FC which is currently at $144 million and just slightly behind Thor which has made $180 million. At this rate it should finish with anything between $170-180 million easy. Also Captain America cost the least to make out of all the Marvel Superhero films this year with a $140 million budget which was $10 million less than Thor and $20 million less than X-Men:FC.

The real flops this year have been Green Lantern and Cowboys vs Aliens which don't look at all likely to recoup their basic budgets let alone what it cost extra to market them worldwide. Note, both these films had higher budgets than all the Marvel films too!

Worse for Ryan Reynolds, he's become box office poison with his newest film "Change Up" just being released to a very poor $14 million weekend estimate. Poor guy hasn't had a hit since 2009 with "The Proposal" alongside Sandra Bullock. Infact the four movies he's made since then has made less than $130 million in total box office!

Paper Man = $13,514
Buried = $1,044,143
Green Lantern = $114,460,092
Change Up = $14,000,000

This movie is one of the best of the year and I think Andy Serkis and John Lithgow should both win Oscars for their roles. It is no surprise that it is doing so well considering the quality of the movie.

GL has LESS than GHOST RIDER: a crap movie about a 4th tier MARVEL character.

Captain America is still to be released in another 17 countries so it has a lot more international box office to go and will easily make a profit for the studio, it's more or less certified its budget recoup with its domestic performance after just two weeks. The studio gets between 80-90% of tickets sales in the initial weeks so around $178.5 of that $210 worldwide gross is theirs with $38.5 of that pure profit to be built on all the way to December. The last country to get Captain America is Japan in October and that's another potentially decent ground for taking double figures in box office. Cap should make at least about $80 million profit by the end of its run, far from a flop or dead in the water!

Cap's doing fine, neck and neck with Thor domestically (and would be 20% ahead of Thor if 3D ticket sales were even) and seems likely to equal X-Men First Class internationally. The idea that it won't make it to $280m (double it's budget) internationally doesn't seem to be based on anything in reality.

I'm quite surprised that Rise of the Apes is doing that well... I honestly didn't think there was that much excitement built up for it. Perhaps the quality of the film alone is pulling people in.

I thought this thread was about Rise of the Apes.. not a cry baby session!
I like the fact that Rise is doing so well and is getting its' props as being a really solid movie. Kinda reminds me of the Star Trek reboot!

@JLA2014: it's a good thing Nolan's Batman Begins wasn't asked to earn 3x it's budget back in theaters, as it came up well short. As did Abrams Star Trek reboot. In truth, that's a bullshit benchmark... The profitability of modern tentpole films has almost nothing to do with box office receipts... Most studios knowingly pay more on advertising than they'll ever see back from their share of a film's box office. It's all a loss-leading advertising campaign for the more profitable streams of revenue that come later. Look up an article titled "hollywood profits demystified" on google if you'd like to understand it better.

Ok, I just wondering here but where the hell did Green Lantern and Captain America come from in this post.

I mean, isn't this supposed to be about how Rise of the Planet of the Apes prove that Fox is changing their gameplan (though they started to change with the A-Team movie and Avatar).

"A movie needs to make atleast 3 times its budget to be called profitable and If my maths is right then $350 mill is not three times $140 mill"

Your math may be okay, but you may want to study accounting. Seriously, some of the things people say on here make me wonder about the education system out there. If you make your budget and operate in the black, then you are profitable. If a movie makes $1 million over its budget and expenditures than it is profitable. It may not be as much as the film company wants to make, but it is still profitable.

I never liked any of the old Apes movies, but I just saw this one and it was fantastic.

I thought the only problem was Franco, and I usually like him but he didn't bring anything to this movie.

This movie is worthy.Lots of nods to the originals.
1)"get your hands off me you dirty damn ape"!
2)Cornelia(reference to Cornelius)
3)..."it's a mad house,a mad house!"
4)fire house
5)ape on horse back
6)'Bright eyes'
...and so on...
