SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS Writer Explains The Thinking Behind That Big IRON MAN 3 Connection

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callaham explains why the movie brought a certain character back from Iron Man 3, and how Tony Stark's death ultimately factored into that decision.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings features a few fun surprises, but one of the most unexpected comes when we're reintroduced to Trevor Slattery.

In Iron Man 3, we learned that A.I.M.'s Aldrich Killian had hired the actor to portray "The Mandarin," and in the All Hail The King One-Shot, Trevor was busted out of prison by the Ten Rings. In Shang-Chi, Trevor returns, revealing that he's been imprisoned by Wenwu to entertain his men (the only reason he wasn't executed was that he started performing for them seconds before they pulled the trigger).

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Dave Callaham explained why the decision was made to bring the character back after his Iron Man 3 appearance in 2013. Ultimately, with Iron Man gone, it sounds like this was the best way of tying into that franchise they could find!

"In our case, Sir Ben’s character, Trevor Slattery, was really the only connective tissue we had available to us to connect to any previous iteration of the Ten Rings or the Mandarin, because Tony Stark is dead," Callaham explained. "We knew we wanted to use Sir Ben if it was possible, and that was a question we asked very early. 'Would Marvel be open to that? Was that a good experience? Did he enjoy playing Trevor Slattery?'

"It’s been some time since he was in Iron Man 3 so I didn’t know what his appetite is for coming back to a role like that. We asked and Kevin said, 'Sounds great. We all love Trevor here. We’d love to see him again. But you guys need to craft the story and then lure him in. And that will be on you guys creatively, to give him something juicy,'" he recalled. "I don’t know if we did outlines or had an actual script at the point we first approached him. That’s the moment I believe some version of Destin having to do a Zoom meeting or something like that happened, and he described what we were thinking, and it turns out Sir Ben very much likes to play Trevor Slattery. It worked out."

The response to this "Mandarin" reveal wasn't overly positive, especially after the trailers marketed Kingsley's version as the one fans had been waiting to see from the comic books.

Things did work out for the best by the time all was said and done, of course, as we ultimately got a far more authentic take on this villain thanks to Tony Leung. Trevor, meanwhile, was definitely an entertaining part of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings...even if he did outstay his welcome!

As of right now, there's no word on the possibility of him showing up elsewhere in the MCU, but stay tuned as you never know when that might change.

Wenwu's talk about the importance of names and how his was misused and exploited was great.

Trevor's hilarious & makes every scene he's in light up. Completely unpredictable & that can be a breath of fresh air in these movies, especially leading up to conventional 3rd Act CGI-itis.

Nice to have the great Sir Ben Kingsley representing south asians in the MCU's first asian led film, as well.

@nmasterofnaught - I really think the big problem with the Mandarin reveal in Ironman 3 was that Ben Kingsley played a genuinely scary villain for Tony to take on so we all wanted to see that happen. There was no good build up for Killian, he was a nerd who made himself better and hated Tony, Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin had a strength and mystery to him.

I didn't really see the point in his character nor that plush toy selling creature being in the movie. I didn't hate it or anything, and some of their stuff made me chuckle, but the entire time he was on screen I kept internally asking myself, "why is this guy here, does he really need to be here"? Also did anyone else have any issues with Wenwu saying he and his ten rings took over the world yet when we meet them in Iron Man for the first time they're just a bunch of terrorists? By then he would have been wielding the ten rings again or at least before Iron Man 3.

@JustAChillFan - I agree, for what its worth. I didn't hate it, but he did take me out of the movie a bit. Maybe because it was a complete surprise?
I don't know. No hate towards Sir Kingsley or even Trevor. But, I was asking how much more he was going to be in the movie. Although I did want to hold the plush toy, personally!

@JustAChillFan - those terrorists were a faction of the Ten Rings.

Wenwu was all about ruling from the shadows. The opening scene illustrated that influence held in the dark was his thing.

@JustAChillFan - What we saw in Iron Man was the tip of the iceberg. We saw guys like that to guys in Ant-Man showing up in suits to try to buy the Yellow Jacket tech. His entire army is deep. They’re everywhere.

Pff Trevor did not outstay his welcome. He had everyone in the theater cracking up.

@newhire13 - true, just seems weird to be a shadow organization that is also a well known terrorist group.

I had no idea there was going to be THAT much Trevor Slattery and I was so happy they got to use him the way they did. Felt like Kingsley hadn't missed a beat

I get that they set up the Mandarin run back in the hail to the king short, but it didn’t quite all work out that well. Either the ten rings we saw in iron man where fake 10 rings all along or the real 10 rings have a small Middle East terrorist cell in their global empire. Just nitpicking really, I’m sure someone will be able to/ has thought up a semi workable explanation

@Twenty23Three - I'm thinking they were just one of many global cells, and since Stark Industries had such a presence in that area that is who Stane was able to negotiate with 🤷‍♂️

@Twenty23Three - as a worldwide thousand year threat he has terror cells in all countries.. maybe even within SHIELD

Iron Man 3 had a good first act and then everything went to hell.
The movie was based on Warren Ellis "Extremis" story, which redefined Iron Man for the 21st century and is probably the 2nd most important story after "Demon in a bottle". The Mandarin was behind the creation of the extremis virus.

Ben Kingsley played a modernized terrorist Mandarin really menacing, before it was revealed that it was just a role that an actor by the name of Trevor Slattery played - whoever had that idea should never get another opportunity to write a script.

Shang Chi also had a good first act, the 2nd act with all the flashbacks and the deus ex machines moments wasn't as good and the final act was a pointless, soulless (pun intended) cgi battle.
It is a shame that Robert Downey never had the chance to play with a real villainous Mandarin.

The moment when the Mandarin said that he was also known as Master Khan made me roll my eyes - it's a totally different character.

Absolute garbage i’m afraid, more Disney family adventure like Mulan rather than Marvel comic book.
