SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Star Zachary Levi Reveals Why The Sequel Is Better Than 2019's SHAZAM!

By the time Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrives in theatres, it will have been four years since the first instalment was released. Now, Zachary Levi has hyped up the sequel with some very interesting remarks.

Shazam! opened to positive reviews and solid box office numbers in 2019, but the wait for the sequel has proved to be a long one. Production has already wrapped on Shazam! Fury of the Gods, but it won't electrify audiences until mid-2023. It's unclear why Warner Bros. is holding off on sharing the movie sooner, but it could very well be because Black Adam will be released next year.

Regardless, Collider recently caught up with Zachary Levi to discuss his new movie American Underdog, and the actor made it clear he believes the sequel will be even better than its predecessor.

"I will say that I genuinely — and this is not just lip service — I'm really proud of the first one, I think we made a really, really good movie. I think the second one is better. I think that we had more time, we had more budget," the actor explained. "We had, essentially, the entire cast returning, and we all knew our characters a little bit more; we could kind of sit into them a little bit more."

"Henry Gayden, who wrote the first script, wrote the second, and he did a fantastic job doing so. Everything just clicked even a little bit more. And also the kids have grown up a little bit more, so even the sensibilities of them become even slightly more mature which brings it closer to my or other people's adult minds, so there's even more connection there, I think."

"The action's great, the comedy's great, the relationships are great," Levi continued before highlighting some of Shazam! Fury of the Gods' new casting additions. "The bad guys, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, are fantastic. I'm very proud of it. I want it to come out sooner than June of 2023."

The first movie served as a great introduction to Shazam and his Family, but a follow-up that's even grander in scale is exciting for a lot of reasons. Fans continue to hope that the stage will be set for the title character to clash with Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam, but that meeting doesn't look likely to happen for a while yet. Hopefully, the upcoming movies at least lay the groundwork for a crossover!

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on June 2, 2023.

Genuinely loved the first, one of my favourites of the DC hit and miss era.
Recently rewatched Aquaman and enjoyed it more a second time.

MOS, Aquaman and Shazam are my personal faves of DC, wish the universe had been more coherent, in terms of shared universe

I'd be really surprised if an actor said that the sequel is worse than their previous movie.

But yeah, I get it...

As someone who actually loves MoS, BvS (Ultimate Edition), and ZSJL - I loved Shazam too! The first film had a lot of heart and I remember being pleasantly surprised when I saw it in theaters.

Just don’t have Shazam doing any stupid tik tok dances and we’re all good

I liked Shazam, Aquaman tried to squeeze three movies into one and thats why I won't rewatch it as much. Same writer is good, I'm expecting something slightly better. Bring it on!

The first Shazam movie was outstanding. A shame there will have been a four-year wait for the sequel.

The problem I had with Shazam was a kid in adult body still acts like a kid.

Whenever I read Shazam in a comic book,he sounds or talks like an grown man not sound like a kid, hence The Wisdom Of Solomon.

@marvel72 - Totally! Also think its going to be weird to make another shazam movie after this or even have him in other films. As the kid ages up into a young adult (pretty much already there), what do you do?

@Shivermetimbers - Don't know, maybe trap him in the Shazam body,so he can't change back.

Unless this seriously bombs at the box office there will be a third movie. In the comics the kids don't get older. (In the comics main characters RARELY get older, but you get my point.) I really wonder how they're going to incorporate children into the third one. The first was released in 2019. 2023 will see the release of the next one. Unless they fast track it (not a great idea) the earliest possible outing for the third film will be 2026. That will age the littlest kid in the movie to 19 in real life. They can easily rework the story where the kids actually DO age up. But unless they work out a way to explain why the adult actors look different than the (not so much anymore) kid actors, that would put the adult actors out of work as well. It's easily workable to where everyone would keep their jobs through the third movie. But I wonder if they will go that route or recast the kids in the third one.

He's underrated as a dramatic actor. The first two or three seasons of Chuck have some legit pathos that he actually plays really well. Looking forward to this.

I just listened to a podcast the other day with John Krasinski, and so when I read this quote I had to remind myself for a second what Zachari Levi's voice sounds like.

"And also the kids have grown up a little bit more, so even the sensibilities of them become even slightly more mature which brings it closer to my or other people's adult minds, so there's even more connection there, I think."

But so much of the appeal of the character and the first movie comes from the child-like wish fulfillment, immaturity, and innocence. It can still be good, but the aging of the young cast isn't really a plus for me.

The first one will be tough to beat for me. I wasn't aware of Shazam/Captain Marvel or the Shazamily at the time, so I got very emotional seeing Billy's family rise alongside him. It was really really cool to see.

In a franchise that boasts rivalries like Batman and Joker, Superman and Luthor, Wonder Woman and Cheetah, Aquaman and Ocean Master, it could very well end up being Shazam and Black Adam that comes out on top.
