Warner Bros. and New Line's
Shazam! was one of this year's biggest successes, grossing over $363.1 million worldwide ($139.7M domestic; $223.4M foreign) on a very modest $100 million production budget (before P&A), which gave the studios more than enough reason to give a quick go-ahead to a sequel with the same creative team on board.
It was
reported in early April that Henry Gayden, who wrote the first film, had been tasked with penning the sequel's script and that David F. Sandberg and Peter Safran would also be returning as producers. Sandberg is also expected to return to the director's chair.
With the film awaiting its home video release, the sequel is still in the very early stages of development, but earlier this week, star Zachary Levi (
Chuck) confirmed that Gayden has already begun working on the script. Levi also added that he expects filming to begin in late spring or early summer of next year, meaning - if everything goes according to plan - cameras should actually be rolling on the follow-up by this time next year.
A release date has yet-to-be announced, but this filming timetable would seemingly suggest the studios are eyeing a 2021 date, possibly making it the third DC movie of the year, joining Matt Reeves' long-gestating
The Batman (June 25) and James Gunn's
The Suicide Squad (August 6).

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
