Todd McFarlane's Spawn movie has been in the works for a long time now, and the comic book writer and artist has frequently promised that news is coming. The pandemic appeared to have caused the project to stall for a while, but with Spider-Man: No Way Home star Jamie Foxx still attached to play the title character, it feels like it could happen...eventually.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Foxx didn't offer any concrete updates, but shared high praise for the direction McFarlane is taking this new Spawn in.
"I talk to Todd and we want to craft something that is so special because I remember seeing the first Spawn movies and then seeing the HBO versions and so we have something that is almost like an original, without giving too much away," Foxx said. "But it starts in a way that is so cool. And it's not big budget, you know? And that's what I love about it."
"It's sort of like how when they did the Joker. The Joker, yes, is here, but the story about this man who was in fire, it's the same with what we're doing," the actor continued. "And so, we're just getting this right, cooking it right, but staying in contact, keeping the energy going and when we lay it on you, there's gonna be some moments where you go, 'Oh man.'"
McFarlane plans to step behind the camera to direct Spawn, a decision which may make the reboot a harder sell to studios. These comments are promising, though, and those comparisons to Joker are definitely intriguing (the character's creator has previously said the movie will be R-Rated).
There's no need to panic about this new take being too grounded in reality, though, as Foxx would go on to tease Spawn's epic big screen costume.
"I've seen a lot of concepts," he teased. "Because Todd, what he does it, every single day he's doodling and he's fixing and he's doing some things that, to me, I think is gonna be like way out when you see it. And how he crafts that cape and how that cape becomes almost like – I'll say this – as big as the screen that you're watching."
Sounds pretty awesome, right?
Hopefully, we'll see Spawn begin to take shape over the coming months as a fresh interpretation of the iconic Image Comics superhero is long overdue. As always, keep checking back here for updates!
