Deadline reports that The Amazing Spider-Man made $21 million at the North American box office yesterday, putting it right on track for a six-day total of around $140 million. This is by no means a huge result on the scale of Marvel's The Avengers for the Marc Webb helmed superhero reboot, but as a Sony exec tells the site, "In the world of reboots it’s pretty spectacular." To put this into context for you, it's worth remembering that 2005's Batman Begins had an opening weekend of $48.7 million, while X-Men: First Class opened to $55.1 million last year. The Amazing Spider-Man on the other hand looks set for around $65 million in total. The site also mentions that, "Sony is fast-tracking the next installment of its new trilogy with fresh villains and storylines that should spark more interest in this too-soon reboot." Check out my interview with Marc Webb HERE and be sure to click HERE to read my 4* review of The Amazing Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

STARRING:

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard
Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben
Sally Fields as Aunt May
Denis Leary as George Stacy

RELEASE DATE: Out Now.

Sony fast-tracked the sequel more than a year ago when they announced a date for The Amazing Spider-man 2 in order to have more franchise blockbusters on their development slate.

And it is a fairly impressive result for a reboot, especially compared to DC's Batman Begins and Superman Returns. Spider-man as a character certainly maintained a great deal of audience appeal. (using the X-men as an example is a bit more misleading, considering how few returnin characters were included in the reboot there.)

The sequel will make way more. Especially if Norman is the villain. It had the best action scenes I have ever seen in a Spidey film.

What happened to that expose article that was on here around 5a.m. ET this morning? It was a youtube video of a user who always had his articles deleted. I was on the third page of comments when the article just vanished. It looks like the powers that be didn't like people talking about articles being deleted!

nothing new to expect from this B movie, it shouldn't be like this, but TASM is just a low point on Spidey movie career hope the sequel con do more.

Movies are a business. Sony would have been fools NOT to make more Spiderman movies considering their first three made them tons of money. As far as a reboot goes, it really was necessary in order to tell the stories they wanted.

This article tries to sugar-coat the fact that this reboot has scored way below expectations. Initially they expected over $170 million for the six day total, then that came down to $160 million when its Thursday takings showed a huge drop and now they're saying $140 million after Fridays low takings.

And if we keep things in context, Batman Begins came out 8 years after Batman and Robin. None of the Batman films had huge openings, the biggest was Batman Forever with $52 million so BB's $48 million was not a disappointment. Especially since it grossed more than any other Batman movie at the time aside from the first Tim Burton flick.

Spider-man under Raimi all had huge box office weekends, Spidey1 opened to $114 million, Spidey2 opened on a Thursday and by the Sunday had made $152 million, even Spidey3 opened huge with $151 million! For this film to be released merely 5 years after and make less than every sequel before it is a let down and doesn't bear well for its final gross either.

They have a hit on their hands, yes. But its a much smaller hit than its potential would allow, that's plainly obvious. They expected much bigger numbers especially with 3D presentations galore, none of the other Spiderman films had that benefit. At this point the people who thought this was going to make more money than the Avengers can stop dreaming.

Green Goblin is a must for sequel & hopefully his costume will look more like the comic book
version than 2002 Spider-Man film.

Willem Dafoe was great as Norman Osborn but the suit / mask was awful.
Spider-Man 2 was best of that trilogy so perhaps Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be better than the current film.

I just wonder what actress will play Mary Jane once Gwen is killed off as she MUST be.

I believe this movie will be a big hit...I expected that it will not have huge opening numbers since almost everybody already condemned it before it was even released...Spider-man 3 opened huge but because of bad reactions fell flat and finished only with $330 million...this will be the opposite...with good word of mouth, I believe it will eventually get its numbers...

@Just1superguy: eh, it was a pseudo reboot at least, muddled in it's continuity by seeming to keep the majority of the first two films (if you didn't question the timeline, including the relative ages of the characters not to mention the era it was set in) but jettisoning the next two and Supergirl. That puts it close enough into the definition of relaunching a franchise with new actors and new continuity for me, especially when the time between franchises is added.

I think the opening would have been far bigger had they not retold the origin. You certainly don't need to start with the origin each time, or at least show it all. The whole reason Batman Begins could get away with restarting from the origin is that Tim Burton's Batman wasn't an origin story to begin with... The only thing they shared was a flashback to the night Bruce's parents died.

The two marvel reboot films with authentic names The incredible hulk and The amazing spiderman have both been written off before they were released. 5 years isn enough to make the masses forget hulk and spiderman 3. I loved this film though, best one of the lot imo.

The sequel should be pretty great. I loved this one, but the sequel doesn't have to re-do anything. It can be its own, original thing. From here, the story can pretty much go anywhere. It's exciting!

kraven in the sequel could be quite good, he heres about two animal related humans, humanoids fighting in new york and he wants a piece. Perhaps have Norman hire him and similar to ultimate spiderman the series have osborn be intriguied and want to dissect spiderman. Im thinking they should make this series 4 films, first 2 have no indication that gwens in any danger of being killed so when goblin throws her off the bridge at the end of the 3rd one its more shocking. Then have the fallout in the 4th so you have spidey murn but eventually 100% becmes the optimistic spiderman of the comic.

BB numbers of 48.7 mil are from 2005. SW: Revenge of the Tshi (horrible example I know) made $380,270,577 which adjusted to $469,850,700 according to the boxofficemojo inflation chart. Adjust BB similarly and you get just over 60 mil today. That's a little more apples to apples. And wait for it... BB didn't have the 3D numbers. TASM was supposed to get healthy before the freight train hits.

boxoffice records are cool and all...

but some people pay too much atention to it.

the first movie of a reboot wont have a bigger impact than the previous movies, lets be realistic.

The best important thing is that Spidey has 4 movies already, that's pretty good for any superhero, and he'll have two more, at the very least.

Not all the superheroes has that luck.
Sabconth
Sabconth - 7/7/2012, 8:14 AM
@gambgel

That's a pretty poor estimation of a characters success.

The Resident Evil films and Milla Jovovich's character will have appeared in 5 films, doesn't make them any less shitty though.

@ckal

Precisely. They should have done what Burton did with the first Batman film, have Spiderman already be an established superhero.

Start the film off with him taking down a lesser villian, like Rhino or something, but show he still has a long way to go to being fully experienced or powered.

That way they could have set off any story they wanted for the first film, rather than spending nearly an hour going through the motions of an origin.

who in the right mind would blatantly admit that their product is not selling the way it should have? none of course. fortunately though this reboot has it's biggest selling point being the character name itself that's the reason it's still generating positive response amidst the not so positive one even before it started. lol

Well, maybe if people weren't so picky about it being a reboot it would sell more. We have people like Grif out there who don't give a crap about it being Spider-Man, the fact that its a reboot kills it.

The movie is AMAZING.
It deserves more.
Great action, great humor, genius dialogue, and a solid string story, and a great, GREAT, villain.

it felt odd to me being on the other fence with this one as a huge Spidey fan boy but what can i do i still prefer the original 1962 comic book storyline over this ultimate version and it's not about Garf being on the lead or whoever played that part for me it's about the closest i could get from the origin and not the re imagined, reboot, repackage, refurnished, remastered, revolutionized, and all the "good adjective you can stick on this one" and it wouldn't matter much to me. no offense to mr. Horner i love his other film scores but just as the same the score is also a big let down to me not a sticky melody could be left hanging to your head that will make you go humming and let you spun recalling how memorable the film was.

nuff said.
