Well, with just over a month and a half until release The Amazing Spider-Man is really starting to amp up it's marketing campaign. Yesterday we were given 1 minute and halves worth of new footage. In this article, I will go over the things I loved about this new trailer.

The Colour And Tone :

One of the many things that impressed me with this clip was the use of colour. It is very stylish making it very unique and interesting. It is a beauty to look at and really separates itself from the Raimi films visual style. It has a very comic book feeling to it, ticking the right boxes for myself personally. That is why I am a big fan of films such as Sin City and 300. The visuals to both those films are very unique, making them very different from most films. I like to see a creative input because in my opinion, it shows the filmmaker truly cares about the project. The tone of the picture is great in my opinion. The first thing I thought of when I saw this preview was, Spider-Man : TAS from the 90's. It looks like Webb and co have done their research and it looks like it is beginning to pay off. It's a living breathing version of TAS and for me that is a good thing.

Tension :

This was one of the best parts of the trailer. The tension and suspense of the scene really pulled me in. It is very hard not to when you are witnessing a hero trying to save the life of a young child as flames begin to crawl their way up the car. What really sells this sequence for me is Andrew Garfield's acting. I can see why they chose to loose the mask for a moment because it gives Andrew the chance to put his acting abilities in full swing, helping the audience to really clamber behind the tension of the situation. if he had just worn the mask, I don't think the scene would have been as nearly impactive.

The Heart Of A Hero :

What really made this sequence for me was the themes that unraveled before our eyes. I was kind of worried that this film would be quite hollow in that respect but it appears there will be a sense of meaning behind it. When Spidey tells the kid to put the mask on, so it will give him strength, a huge smile crept across my face. This is what a superhero is about people. The point of being a superhero is not just to save people but to make them feel a sense of safety and empowerment. It was a very touching moment and helped to add to the tension of the sequence. This I feel was also directed to Peter as well. It appears he fully accepts his responsibilities and would do anything to ensure that he meets them. He is willing to risk his identity to make a child feel better and for me that shows the true heart of a hero. People may complain that he is too willing to take his mask off but in this situation, it made complete sense for me.

The Red Epic:

This bit of tech is turning out to be a revolution in filmmaking. The sheer amount of detail and colour it generates is unmatched in my opinion. This is why I think some people viewed the footage and found something "off" about it. The imagery is so clear. it is something most of us have not experienced before visually, so I feel it will take a little while to get used to it. it is a big leap from the traditional style of cinema and something that we will become more accustomed to as time progresses. I think that is the gripe with The Hobbit at the moment. Spider-Man has not been filmed in 48 fps like The Hobbit but it is pretty clear to see that these cameras give films a very glossy and detailed look. Almost too detailed some would argue.

All in all, I was most impressed with the new footage that was shown, even if it was only a minute. I am personally happy for them to not show me anymore because I want to surprised. It would have been very easy for Sony to just release four minutes of unseen footage to the public but I think they chose the right option.

So far, I am loving the themes that seem to be apparent in this film and it is making the wait unbearable. At this point, the quality of the film could go either way but hopefully it is along the lines of great. July 4th is almost here ladies and gentlemen and I for one am as excited as ever.

Anyway what did you think of the new clip ? Did you like it or do you feel it could have been done better ?

I have no idea how the movie is going to turn out over all but one thing that I am pretty sure about is Garfield as Spiddey, I mean the dude has immense acting talent and its time rest of the world saw that, and that little clip just proves how talented he is, in those 60 seconds he nail the whole idea behind spidey. Garfield FTW

I loved the bridge sequence at the begining of the preview. It was so intense and I actually felt scared/worried when the car dropped and the kid was still in it. I felt something real in it unlike the Raimi films (which I loved), I think people are just starting to warm up to this film and I think this is gonna be much bigger than anticipated.

July 3rd can't come quick enough.

Ashes, couldn't agree more. I was always looking forward to the movie because I've always been a fan of the character, TAS has always been a favorite of mine. But I was worried with Webb directing, and he seems to have blown it out of the water. I love the dark tone to it, like you said the cinematography looks amazing, and I am sick of people complaining about the movie, without seemingly giving it a chance, or having any clue what they are talking about.

Good Points as usual Ashes, can't wait for the movie.

Completely agree with everything said here- it definately is shaping up to the kind of movie I'd wished Raimi's original was. Don't get me wrong, the first two Spidey films are classic CBM's but they weren't fully accurate portrayals of the character, and this seems like it to me. Great article Ashes.

"...Andrew the chance to put his acting abilities in full swing..." heh, I see what you did there!

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to this.

I agree, I really am as on board as you can be now that I've seen that scene between the kid and Spider-Man. This is going to be a really great movie

I can say i'm looking forward to this film. The only thing that has bugged me from the trailers is the way the action scenes looked in 3-d and the rumors that they changed the origin story.

Also is it just me, but it seems that the Raimi series has been getting a lot of hate since the footage from this film got better.

Yeah I don't get that personally. I liked the first two Raimi films but it appears ever since this film has come into the spotlight, people have been quite harsh about the previous films. I personally believe it is because at this beginning when this film first released the teaser trailer it was getting a lot of hate. Then once it released its second trailer the people who were defending the teaser trailer had gained ammunition to throw back at the haters.

I think the reason why this is happening is because there is really nothing else to compare it to, so people are going to pick out flaws in both series. Old and new.

@nowtheresaBATman - I totally agree with you. The only thing that made the first Spider-Man so memorable was 1)the upside down kiss 2) it was the first time we got to
spider-Man on the big screen. Overall the costume design for the Green Goblin was a let down and the plot was just the classic Goblin vs. Spider-Man plot that has been in every Saturday morning cartoon. Spider-Man 3 was an absolute disaster. So that is 1 for 3, maybe 1.5 for 3 on the previous series. I think this new series is going to be way better.

All of these where high points.
The one thing that I didn't realize would be as prevalent was the color.
I was expecting it to be darker and more subdued, like Batman Begins, but apparently they're going for a mostly realistic, slightly brighter New York City, contrasted with comic-book fantasy quality of Spider-Man ripped from the pages.
I'm really loving the visual style of the film so far, much more than I thought I would.

@Ashes2Phoenix:
Loved the article, especially your words on Color and Tone, and The Red Epic. This camera provides astounding clarity. It'll make those first person shots look amazing. My only worry is that with Sony Image Works lagging behind in the CGI department, will this extra clarity make weak CGI moments stand out more?

Watching these clips gives you yet another a good idea of how far they went to put a real guy up there on rigs and wires and all that stuff. But then you get split second moments where the CGI looks off. I don't know, I guess I just want it all to come together.

It must be said though, many moments in these newer clips look much better now than when we first saw them in trailer 2. That part on top of the Oscorp building where the tower comes crashing down, that part looks much, much better. Lizard is also looking a lot more detailed. Passable now, even if it's not the best CGI creation ever. Neither was 2008s Hulk, I still liked it though.

about peter taking his mask off:

am i the only one that notices great character development? the film takes place when peter is just getting to grips with his powers. hes in an early spider stage.

when he took his mask off i instantly though that it suited the character early on perfectly. i ended up thinking 'ok, if this was spidey having his powers for a few months/a year, would he do that?'. very good acting and choices there, well done.
