Stop complaining about the reboot. Please.

I've been holding back my anger towards the haters out there who are criticizing Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker for long enough. After reading article after article on the new Spider-man reboot and seeing angry comment after angry comment of people raging against Garfield's Parker, I just can't hold it in any longer. So what am I going to do? Write an angry article to combat all those angry comments of course!

Now before everyone gets all pissy and tells me that I know nothing about Spider-man and that my opinion is worthless, I am going to tell you exactly who I am to judge. I am a Spider-man fan. I have more Spider-man comics than any other comic, Spider-man was the first hero I ever loved; Spider-man is what made me get into comics in the first place. I've read almost every era of Spider-man; the Stan Lee stuff, the Romita era, the Venom era, the Clone Saga, J.M.S's run, Ultimate Spider-man, the Brand New Day stuff, and Dan Slott's "Big Time". I know Spider-man, I know his story, I know his villains, I know his girlfriends, hell I even know his clones. I have also seen the three Raimi films. I'm not one of those people who says that Raimi's movies sucked and that the reboot will be perfect. I love the Raimi films(although I wouldn't use love to describe my feeling for the third film). I don't think the reboot will be perfect, how could it be? I, just like most of you, hated the thought of rebooting the franchise when I first heard the news. But after thinking about for a long time, I think the reboot will be good for Spider-man fans. But enough of my history with Spider-man, its time for me to get on to the hate comments filling up every article about the reboot. Most of these comments focus on Andrew Garfield being cast as Peter Parker. People say that there is no way he could top Tobey Maguire's performance. Really? Did Tobey Maguire really do that good of job? Don't get me wrong, I think Tobey Maguire is a great actor, just not necessarily a great Peter Parker. I enjoyed his performance, and the movies are still great, but there are still some problems with Tobey's Peter.

First of all, he never really came off as that smart to me. Peter is supposed to be really smart, and Tobey has his moments, but he didn't convey that sense of young genius. Before people try to point out the many moments when Peter said something really smart let me remind you that those are just moments. Tobey's Peter only seems smart when he's saying or doing something extremely nerdy. This means we get a lot of "Look at him, look at him, he can't catch the bus! Or talk to a girl! He MUST be nerdy!" moments. Or the, "Listen to him! I can't understand a word he's saying! All this scientific jargon MUST mean he's smart!" But think about it, when did Peter Parker actually do anything smart in those three films? Getting good grades doesn't count. In the comics, Peter always used his smarts to think of ways to beat his villains, but in the movies he just beats them up. I'm not saying there can't be fights, just that Peter should show a little more ingenuity than the simple "web, punch, repeat" routine that we get in the first three films. He didn't even deduce that the symbiote was weak to sonics, he just realized it in the middle of the big fight. Tobey does successfully capture the "gee whiz" aspect of Peter wonderfully, but if there was one aspect of Peter I'd be willing to sacrifice it would be that one.

The worst part about Tobey's Peter, and probably the worst part about all the Raimi films, is that he isn't funny in costume. AT ALL. Peter doesn't make a single joke in the entire three films. Calling someone "Gobby" isn't a joke. In the comics Spidey was always joking, to the point where he's almost a more family friendly version of Deadpool. This joking thing brings me to my number one complaint about people who hate on the Spidey reboot. They say it will be too "emo". People just don't get tired of calling James Garfield an "emo" Peter Parker. But from the footage shown at comic-con, it appears like he will actually be making jokes in this film. And is Tobey Maguire's Peter really less "emo"? He cries ALL THE TIME. In fact, I think about one fourth of Spider-man 3 was him crying, and another fourth was him dancing for goodness sake!

People always say that this movie looks too dark and that Spider-man is supposed to be fun. But the comics are pretty dark. Kraven burying Spider-man alive and then killing himself, police captain Jeanne DeWolf getting murdered by a serial killer, the Green Goblin killing Gwen, Carnage, the Lizard eating his own son, and Arana getting sacrificed by Kraven's voodoo family all come to mind as stories in the comics that were really dark, and really good. Spider-man is often at his best when he's dark. So what's everyone complaining about? Andrew Garfield's hair?

...I guess you have a point there.

............I'll still complain.

I watched The Social Network over the weekend and while I was actually impressed with Garfield's acting, he never struck me as someone who could pull off Pete.

if the new Spidey is supposed to be funny....why is he "emo"? emo people don't crack jokes all the time.

the lack of humor or smart moments in the Maguire films can be blamed on the writers/director, not Maguire.

RunDTC, do you know what emo is? How is Andrew Garfield emo? That doesn't make any sense.

I am still a little skeptical about him. He seems way too broody for Peter.

Garfield isn't my problem with the movie. I just dont think itll be as good as the first two of Raimi's Finland. Just my opinion.

@Stmblin: from the little we've seen about the film, there seems to be alot of emphasis on Peter being a moody, quiet -emo- teen who wears his hood up all the time. I'm not saying he's goth and wants to kill himself or anything, he just doesn't look like the happy, witty Peter we've known for so long.

my bad. @Stumblin.

I personally don't see him as moody OR emo. In fact, see him more as a concealed/secretive teen - which he should be, considering NOBODY is supposed to know who he is. I think it'll be great and worth my money, but that doesn't mean that you think that too. To each his own, my only hope is that once the film comes out, you guys will see it and find out for yourself whether it was good or horrible.

Most of the "problems", with Peter Parker, you wrote about were due to the wriiting not the acting.

The kid will probably perform well tho.

@golden123- Agreed. Toby was a fine Pete/Spidey.

@RunDTC "Happy witty Peter?" No, Peter's never ever been those things. SPIDER-MAN is, but not Peter. When Peter's in his Spider-Man costume, he realizes that he can be the person that he's too shy to be in school: the witty, charming, and outgoing personality. Peter, on the other hand, has always been the opposite. Don't go getting the two mixed up. And he's not "emo." Don't be such a judgemental authority. He's lonely and depressed, the way he's always been. Maybe if your uncle died, you're an orphan, you're poor, girls generally don't talk to you, AND you have no friends, you'd be the same. Rant over.

Thanks for reading everybody. To address the people saying that the Peter Parker problems are due to writing, fine there due to writing, but there still problems. When people refer to Tobey Maguire as Spiderman they aren't thinking of JUST the acting and not the writing. The two kind of go hand in hand.

Ok being that I really liked this article (great job LAWLZY96). A few things I'd like to point out. I know it's a person's opinion, but Tobey was never really good at Peter/Spidey, and did I like the movies?HELL NO! I enjoyed them, I don't even mention the third.A lot of what was said in this article is VERY true, and as much as someone wants to blame the writers, that's BS bcuz as much $ as Tobey made he could and do anything he wanted in his portrayal, so to say it's the writer's fault is stupid. If u really wanna know how good this movie will be then watch the spectacular Spiderman on YouTube and then say something. Andrew Garfield is an amazing actor and I watched a few movies he was in and will nail. THIS REBOOT WILL DO WHAT RAIMI'S DIDN'T AND THAT'S STAY TRUE TO SPIDEY! No organic webbing, no MJ, No emo dance no BS crying. But wise cracking, think on his feet Spidey .Gwen Stacy (need I say more) .this movie WILL deliver

Other than being in his late 20s, I think Garfield's the best choice for Spider-Man right now. He's an excellent actor and seems very devoted to doing the character right.
As for what I'm concerned about...

1)So far, it seems like they're doing the origin completely all over again, step-by-step. Despite the tweakings, I don't wanna see the origin story again. It was done perfectly ten years ago.
2)I'm fine with the suit for the most part, but the mask's eyes have to be fixed. I would've loved something Edge Of Time-inspired, or even by Alex Ross' design. Plus, even the extended legs can't make the emblem look too different from the Raimi version.
3)It looks like Marc Webb will do a good job directing, but does he have the experience to direct action sequences well? I hope Sony hired him for a reason other than his name being 'Webb'.
4)I'm not sure about the whole dark/gritty/realistic approach. Spider-Man's a character that needs to be done on a grand scale, it'd be tough to imagine him swinging around on a lower scale. Plus, ever since The Dark Knight it seems that a CBM has to be gritty/dark in order to be good. Not true.

Other than the above stuff, I think the movie will be good. Glad to see that they're likely being much closer to the comics, not enough faithfulness to the source material was the Raimi trilogy's biggest fault IMO.

To the publisher of this well-written article: I agree with every single word you said. Tobey Maguire was a little whiny bitch in tights. Mary Jane was ugly. Spiderman cracked no jokes. It was a soap opera with costumes... and dancing. Bring on the reboot. It's exactly what this series needs and just in time too. And to the haters, no Spiderman is not emo. He never was. Just because Parker has a freaking hood on in the damn trailer don't make him a freaking emo person. Just be glad this is being rebooted in general because if we got Spiderman 4, all you haters would have been eager to have a reboot. So, shut the f up with the hate.

i dont think ill ever fully understand where the hate is coming from for this movie, it has good actors, its staying more true to the comics (aside from the suit which does look THAT bad at all) and it has the Lizard...what exactly seems so wrong about it that so many feel it will be complete failure?
