JK Simmons Reveals J. Jonah Jameson's Character Arc for Spider-Man 4!

The actor who agreeably played boss of Peter Parker at the Daily Bugle in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man franchise, JK Simmons reveals to his character's arc in the delayed fourth film.

With production on Sony's reboot of the Spider-Man franchise moving swiftly, all the plans that were set for Sam Raimi's delayed-Spider-Man 4 have been long forgotten. We knew that the film would pen Spidey against Vulture (John Malkovich) & Black Cat (Anne Hathaway), but we didn't know what was in store for Peter Parker's ill-tempered boss, J. Jonah Jameson.

Well the actor behind the character, which apparently has been exiled from the reboot completely, JK Simmons recently sat with MTV, where he reveals vaguely where 'Jameson' was headed in the fourth adaption. He also reveals how he felt when Sony pulled the plug.

"J. Jonah Jameson was going to be somehow exiled or disgraced or demoted and end up in some little cubicle somewhere and be railing, even more than usual, against the world," "I'm still reeling from the rug being pulled out of us," he said. "I had just bought a house I can't afford!"

"There wasn't a script-script yet, but I had seen Sam a few weeks before that and we talked about story ideas, because on those movies, we always started on the script and we expanded on it," he explained. "There was a lot of either us coming up with stuff in the room or doing it literally on set — a lot of improv-y stuff with the whole cast in those office scenes." Simmons added: "He was saying, 'This is the basic outline, now go bring me funny stuff.'"

Now we have no JJJ! : (

you could recast anyone out of the old spiderman trilogy, and the only person i'd truly miss is JK as JJ. IMO I have a great idea for a new JJ but I'm saving it til I finish my Spiderman fan fic series and do a fancast

My God, I'm so glad Raimi is gone. Simmons was amazing as JJJ, but the character is more than just comic relief. It was bad enough we had to sit through that idiotic pill scene with him and Betty in Spider-Man 3...this would have been even worse. I just hope Webb introduces the character in the second movie and has him create the Scorpion. [frick] Raimi. Long live the reboot!!!

I always thought Dennis Farrina would have made a good JJJ.

They should really just bring him back for the new Spidey film. Kinda like they did with Micheal Gough as Alfred in the Batman movies... :P Although Micheal Caine is a way better Alfred.

where does he say anything about how he felt about spidey 4 being pulled?

The pill scene was hilarious to me and I don't think we'll see scorpion on-screen for a while until more ridiculous costumed characters appear first.

yeah yeah this is so much better, a tween twilight wanna-be playing him and a crappy futuristic looking scarlet spider suit and no JJ and 3 movies worth of work down the tubes with so many compelling stories left to tell, wow you're right Sony...good call on pulling the plug, morons.

Man that guy is awesome. He's so good at comedic roles It's hard to picture him as the hard ass he played in "Oz" on HBO. What a shame to lose him as JJJ.

TayDee - 1/21/2011, 5:49 PM
And I don't care what anyone says, another actor can do a JJJ performance. JK Simmons got the goofy/spiderman hater part of the character right but JJJ can be serious at times and we didn't see that. I'm not saying JK Simmons wasn't fantastic in the movie, but another actor can bring justice to the character.

i love jk simmons, but after hearing this and about the characters, vulture and the black, and the people who were to portray them.... I AM SO GLAD Spiderman 4 did not get made...im a huge spidey fan and liked very little of sam raimi's movies, however the first two entertained well...And being an even larger fan of Marc Webb, whom i've been following since he did a music video for blink 182 years back, i cannot wait to see this new spiderman film, only concerns are with emma stone play gwen stacy and not mary jane, should be interesting

dickmastaflex - 1/21/2011, 7:56 PM
just recast him back in the sequel. jk is a great actor he can be a bit more series, his jjj is unmatched. let the reboot continue without out the character for 1 film, he is one of the only things that made the first 3 feel like a spiderman movie.

I never thought there would come a day when i would agree with LEEE but i have to in this case, R LEE ERMY would be AMAZING as JJ. I dont think anyone could be more suited to play him as naturally as Mr. Ermy could.

He feels irreplacable as J.Jameson. Hope they still cast him in one of the reboot's trilogy.

Poor guy bought a hose he can't affored.

@LEEE: R. Lee as J. Jonah may just be the best casting suggestion EVER! Seriously - imagining him yell "Parker!" right now makes me feel like I'm setting myself up for disappointment, because if/when someone else is cast, it's just not gonna be as good as my dreams of what Ermey coulda been! It would just be too perfect!!!

As the only character pulled of perfectly in the first three flicks I will miss him. While he may not be in the first of the reboot films I just can't see him not being included eventually. I just hope they can cast him as well then.

In Spider-Man 3 Betty had a button that made Jonah's desk vibrate. The influence of the evil alien symbiote made Peter dance a lot. New York City hosted Spider-Man Day with Spidey balloons. Ted Raimi made repeated appearances. CHEEZY.

JK Simmons is an excellent Jameson, but all his scenes were worthless comic departures from the plot. I'm surprised Raimi never had him sit on a whoopee cushion.

And enough with the R. Lee Ermey crap. Jonah's a New Yorker born and bred. Ermey's heavy midwestern accent would sound ridiculous. Why not cast Jason Statham as James Bond, too?

James Remar's not a bad suggestion - he's from Boston but doesn't sound like it - but Dennis Farina gets my vote. I can overlook his heavy Chicago accent since he's just so damn perfect otherwise:

@luckylu

there was nothing to whine about because it's a goddamn movie, it has no real impact on anyone's lives and if it does then i'm sorry you should probably go ahead and end yours
