Latest Reviews For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Are More Mixed

Several Sites including IGN, HitFix, Associated Press and more have released their reviews for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. These reviews are more mixed than what we have previously heard and read. More after the jump!

Over the past couple of days, sites including IGN, Associated Press and more have released their full reviews for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. Some of these reviews are mixed and have therefore dropped the film's Rotten Tomatoes score from 92% to 78%. Check out excerpts from the reviews down below.

But in terms of tone, characters, performances and even visual effects, "The Amazing Spider-Man" feels like its own separate entity. It may not be as transporting or genre-altering an experience as those earlier films, especially the first two, but it finds a distinct voice. And a great deal of that has to do with the central performance from Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.

Superhero movies have been going strong for 12 years now, putting more pressure on “The Amazing Spider-Man” to start fresh, deliver the goods, stand on its own merits and honor the webhead’s legacy on his landmark 50th anniversary.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” does all of those things and lives up to its name – and that, True Believers, is an amazing feat indeed. Excelsior!

Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man" may not offer the obvious and immediate satisfaction of Sam Raimi's movies - at it's slowest moments, it almost feels like he's making a Spider-Man for the "Twilight" generation. That said, the more you think about it, the more you realize how well it portrays certain aspects of the character better than other typical comic book action movies, and they've certainly set up solid groundwork for another great superhero franchise.

The Amazing Spider-Man stands as a lesson for all reboots. Audiences don't need to go back to Origin Story 101 with these characters, no matter how much spit and polish filmmakers put on such a tale. And simply copying the success of other pictures -- let's go dark like Chris Nolan! -- isn't the key to super-success either. Undiscerning audiences might be mildly diverted by Webb's film, but alas it won't have the lasting impact of many of its superhero peers.

What's good is okay, and what's bad is baffling, and overall, "The Amazing Spider-Man" is, at best, average, and in an age where talented filmmakers are battling to elevate a genre that has become a mini-industry within the larger industry, average just isn't good enough.

Rating: C+

Even with its cutting-edge special effects, the decision to make Webb’s ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ a reboot gives it a faintly stale aroma — especially when it starts cribbing Raimi’s we-are-all-in-this-together post-9/11 New York City milieu. Rehashing the story we already know gives us nothing more than an excuse for some undeniably impressive imagery. That’s who this Peter Parker is. He’s got an extra visual dimension, but no new emotional ones.

Ten summers after releasing Spider-Man — and in the process giving birth to a franchise that grossed nearly $2.5b over three films — Sony starts all over again with The Amazing Spider-Man, a sufficiently entertaining origin story that doesn’t quite reach the dramatic depths it aspires to achieve. Anchored by Andrew Garfield’s heartfelt performance as the lovably nerdy Peter Parker, this effects-laden spectacle can’t help but feel a touch familiar, even though certain significant story beats have been altered from the 2002 film starring Tobey Maguire. The results may not be Amazing — but they’re certainly good enough.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field; the film swings into theatres July 3rd.

Can't say I didn't see this coming, but I'm still waiting to see this for myself to see exactly how it compares to the previous films.

I don't know when and where all of the Raimi vitriol started up(I've never actually met someone in person who hated them as much as some of the folks here, sour grapes, perhaps?), but those movies were damn good, and did a lot for the genre and the Spider-Man franchise as a whole.

Whatever the case this is all we're left with, and I'm no director/producer/studio fanboy so I simply hope that no matter what shape or form Spider-Man takes on the silver screen, it's a good one that guarantees us more offerings from the franchise. It would be a crying shame if this movie didn't deliver.

I LOVE when your movie gets good reviews it's all "suck it! 92% Rotten tomatoes!" then if they're mixed or bad it's "I don't need a critic to tell me what to see. I'm my own critic!"

Just face it, they're professionals and know more about film than you do.

after watching trailers, this is what I feared "he's making a Spider-Man for the "Twilight" generation" and it is exactly what the reviews are saying .....
spidey23435
spidey23435 - 6/27/2012, 11:09 AM
To be fair all the negative comments seem to be centered around the fact that it is too soon for another spidey origin story. Which is really what you would expect someone not enthusiastic about the character to say. Where fans will see the potential of the new story arc going forward non fans or the general audience would see little difference between this and Raimi's version. Obviously I have not seen the film so I can't say this is the only issue but even the bad reviews seem to say Garfield did a great job and its just that its not original.

It's hilarious how when reviewers give films bad reviews the fanboys either talk about how "critics don't matter" or destroy the critics credibility by bringing up some of their past reviews. Face it people this will not be a great film, at least on a critical scale.

I agree, the negative reviews seem to mostly be people who still haven't grasped the fact that they've rebooted the series. They just can't seem to move on and judge the film on its own without comparison..

I'm not certain this film will do as well as we'd all like, critically or financially. It just feels .... rushed? I don't know. I expect TDKR to do better at the b/o, but not by much. People do seem to be in a movie-going mood these days, so maybe it will do gonzo b/o regardless of what critics think.

Not surprising. Still not sure if I'll see this in theaters. Probably a rental. Too bad, cuz Spider-Man is one of my favorite superheroes, but what I've seen of this movie so far not only doesn't have me excited, it's repulsive.

Wow its at 75% on RT just after 15 reviews..... could this end up being rotten? It's a possibility as a harsh backlash always comes with films and this film has a lot to "bash," reportedly.

Really guys as a Spider-Man fan, I feel strange about this movie (the new one to be released soon).

It just doesn't feel like it did back when Sam Raimi's Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire was released. From the trailer then in 2002, it really felt like a Spider-Man movie.

This movie, just doesn't feel much like a Spider-Man movie. It feels like an alternate Spider-Man version 2.0 movie, which I don't really care about. I am interested and want to really see it, but something is missing. I can't put my finger on it. It's like those alternate versions of Spider-Man comics you see in the comic book store. You may pick it up and read it once in a while, but your heart is in the original series.

I think its darker, which is a different approach (okay some change), but it kinda makes it lose that Spider-Man like movie feeling. And the music too. The Sam Raimi movies and its trailers music gave it a Spider-Man like comic book quality to it.

And really, they should have called it Ultimate Spider-Man. Everything about this movie feels like an Ultimate movie. Sam Raimi's really felt like the original (The Amazing series). It was only the web-shooters that were different.

What do you guys think?

I can understand why people would have a problem with the rehash, it's more fun when you watch a movie for the first time and don't know what will happen.

CBM's generally have a set formula to begin with, when you factor in that this is 10 years after we last saw Spidey's origin and you once again have Uncle Ben's death, a villain who knows Peter on a personal level, and said villain is a scientist gone wrong due to self experimentation, it does seem pretty familiar.

Unfortunately I have to wait till the 13th to watch this and the 27th for TDK (that's what I get in return for watching Avengers on the 26th of April).

And yeah it's funny how the critics mattered last week :)

bestintheworld - 6/27/2012, 11:43 AM
It was only a matter of time until the general movie going audience got superhero fatigue. I think these reviews are saying it's starting to set in. Avengers was an event, so people flocked to it, but after TDKR comes out, I'd expect superhero box office to start taking a dive. Too many of these movies have been thrown out there since Spidey back in 2002.

It had to be rebooted. They killed off everyone in the first trilogy!! And screwed up the rest of the characters. There wasn't anything to work with except Connors, but where do you go after that? It's rebooted, they can do better with their characters and stories and hopefully not kill off every single person that comes along.

When all is said and done, this movie will still be better than Spider-Man 3, and still have the status of a well made comicbookmovie. It seems the overall concesues surrounding the film is the performance by Andrew, which really comes as no surprise to me, I just hope the movie dosen't relay just on the strenght of his performance and offers up something more to remember.
