MADAME WEB Has Dropped Below MORBIUS On RT To Become The Worst-Reviewed SSU Movie Yet

It held out for a while, but as more reviews have been added to Rotten Tomatoes, Madame Web has now dropped just below Morbius to become the worst-rated SSU movie on the aggregator...

At 15%, 2022's much-maligned Morbius remains one of the most negatively-reviewed mainstream comic book movies on Rotten Tomatoes, and its fellow SMU instalment, Madame Web, can now also lay claim to this dubious honor.

The initial wave of reviews were far from good, but the movie did gain enough positive verdicts to score around the 24% mark when the embargo lifted earlier this week. However, as more critics weighed-in, the score continued to drop, and Madame Web now sits at a truly abysmal14%.

We didn't have high hopes for this one after the trailers, but didn't quite expect the complete lambasting its been getting, either. Box office prospects are not high (it's expected to take in just $25 million over its first six days on release), but you can never discount a few people seeing the movie purely for a bit of fun.

Who knows - maybe Sony will give Madame Web a re-release down the line!

One cast member who seems to be having a bit of fun with the reactions is Isabela Merced, who took to social media to make reference to that now infamous "he was in the Amazon" line from the first trailer - which isn't actually said in the movie itself.

The Superman: Legacy actress shared a new shot of her character, Anya Corazon, along with a Valentine's Day message incorporating the quotes.

We don't know where another flop would leave "Sony's Spider-Man Universe," but the studio also has a third Venom movie slated for Nov. 8, 2024, and Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, coming on Aug. 30, 2024. El Muerto, which was set to star Bad Bunny, has reportedly been dropped from the schedule.

"'Meanwhile, in another universe...'" reads the official synopsis, "In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines." "The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present."

S.J. Clarkson, who also helmed Marvel’s Jessica Jones and The Defenders, directs from a script by Matt Sazama, Kerem Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Adam Merims executive produced.

I was looking forward to the same, but the movie is so blind there are not even giggles.
I was shaking my head a few times.
This movie deserves 5% on RT.

I just found out this director was the show runner and director of the GOT prequel show starring Naomi Watts that was cancelled and deemed unreleasable.

Sony decided to give this guy an 80 million dollar film.🤡

Yikes.

@Variant - I’m not going to ever stop being a sarcastic joker. This type of stuff is intended to be light hearted.

Let’s just take it as the joke that it was, and not get into this stupid debate again. It’s Friday, I’m off work today, and it’s going to be a good day - not for Madame Web’s box office mind you - but it can be for each of us if we choose it to be.

I wonder how long Sony will keep this up. They are bleeding cash on projects nobody wants to see and are damaging their brand with these poorly made films.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/16/2024, 2:07 AM
@SonOfAGif - I do hope they realize it, especially if Kraven and Venom 3 underperform. They should already drop Hydrodude and El Muerte though
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 2/16/2024, 2:30 AM
@bkmeijer1 - This is what happens when you have a studio that doesn't care about the property and just wants to keep it to prevent their rival from producing a better product. They should have worked with Marvel Studios and made Kraven a joint project. They could have set the film during the Blip with Wakanda at its weakest without a Black Panther and a witch doctor named Calypso uses this moment to craft Herbal potions to make a replica Black Panther. Kraven breaks into Wakanda to obtain specific plants but has to deal with the Dora Milaje led by Okoye. It could have been Kraven vs. Okoye and him eventually obtaining his super human strength but ultimately gets apprehended by Wakanda. And then have the film end with Kraven breaking out of his cell when Namor attacks Wakanda.

bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/16/2024, 2:24 AM
This kinda sucks to be honest. Not because I wanna see Sony succeed with their Marvel movies, but I wanna see more female superhero movies. And with another fail, studio execs probably take this as a sign there's no bread and butter in it.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 2/16/2024, 2:32 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I think part of the problem is that the movies with female heroes just aren't good. Elektra is a well known female hero and yet her solo film with Jennifer Garner was abysmal. Tomb Raider was terrible and so was Resident Evil. All of which have excellent female leads in their franchises.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/16/2024, 5:38 AM
@SonOfAGif - exactly. There are ofcourse good movies with great female leads, like Alien or Prey, but none of them are superhero movies.

It shouldn't be too hard to get it right, right?
