Marc Webb Talks 3D And Teases Extended Edition Of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 For IMAX

Many fans were disappointed when the point-of-view sequences in The Amazing Spider-Man ended up having such an insignificant impact on the film. Well, Marc Webb now shares his own regrets about that, teasing that the IMAX release of the sequel may contain extended sequences!

Promoting the release of The Amazing Spider-Man on DVD and Blu-ray recently, director Marc Webb looked ahead to the release of the sequel, indicating that he wants to put more emphasis on the IMAX format in the follow-up. "I remember watching the abbreviated version [of the POV shot] in IMAX when I went to test the IMAX version, and I was like, 'Shit, I should have held on it," he told Comic Book Resources, revealing that he cut the scene down from 40 seconds to 12. "There was a real feeling in the IMAX environment that was really great. I learned a lesson then to be reverent of the IMAX experience. Maybe we'll do cuts that are specific for the IMAX in the future, I don't know, but there was something about that environment specifically that is unique and really exciting."

Whatever faults some fans and critics may or may not have found with the reboot, there's no doubting just how good the 3D was. Common sense points to the format also being used in the sequel, but the director says that he still has no intentions of bowing down to studio pressure to include any unnecessary and gimmicky effects. "I tend to think more about depth than stuff coming out at you. Avi Arad, my partner, is always like, 'Have it come out at you!' ... so there's different philosophies, even within our camp," reveals Webb. "But I don't want people to be thinking about the 3D. I want it to enhance the sensation of feeling, and if it becomes too in your face -- literally -- it pulls you out of the story and becomes a gimmick," he said. "We were very, very careful not too push it too far."

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

STARRING:

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard

Sally Fields as Aunt May
Denis Leary as George Stacy

RELEASE DATE: Out Now.

Marc Webb's enthusiasm and passion for the World he's shaping with Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and the cast are contagious. Can't wait for the sequel, and my blu-ray should better get here already.

How's about an extended cut of the first one? The film needed a better editor.

Awesome movie. Better than Spider-Man 2.

For its faults (and by no means do I think it is a flawless, perfect movie), The Amazing Spider-Man was the best film in the franchise by far. I was initially very concerned about the film (having been a huge childhood fan of the first 2 Raimi films) and as I was looking forward to watching it I yo-yoed between excitement and terror at what I had seen in terms of news about the film pre-release. But when I watched the film, all my anxieties disappeared and I loved it. It's a far more personal, deep version of the origin story.

I think it's main problem was the fact that it was the second version of the origin - in my opinion, it was the better of the two versions, but the fact that it had to reuse many elements of Raimi's version obviously had a negative impact. That and the one avoidable comparison which was the scene where Conners talks to his Lizard self subconsciously - that reminded me too much of the Norman/Goblin conversations in the Raimi film.

And I agree with Brady, the editing could have been a lot better.

That's just stupid. There is no artistic reason to put extended scenes in IMAX cinemas, but not in regular cinemas at the same exact bloody time. If it's good for the goose, it's god for the gander. Gain a pair af artistically integritous balls, Webb!

I think I speak for all of us that we want Webb to PUSH THE 3D TOO FAR for the sequel. That is why the first movie looked more 2d than 3d. I mean come on, people can do amazing stuff with 3D, and TASM 3D falls flat compared to them. Like Legends of The Guardians (Plot was okay, 3D was AWESOME) or Hugo (I haven't seen it but they tell me the 3d is very awesome too)
