Written by Scott Blaszak and directed by Isaac Ezban, sci-fi movie Parallel focuses on a group of friends who stumble upon a mirror that serves as a portal to a "multiverse." However, they soon discover that importing knowledge from the other side in order to better their lives brings increasingly dangerous consequences.
The cast includes David Harewood (Supergirl) and Martin Wallström (Mr. Robot), and we recently had the opportunity to catch up with the latter to discuss Parallel ahead of its release from Vertical Entertainment in Select Theaters & On Demand on December 11th, 2020.
You'll find the full interview here tomorrow, but during our conversation with Martin, we had to ask the actor if superhero roles are something that interest him. If you've seen Mr. Robot, you'll know he would make a great comic book bad guy, but it turns out Spider-Man is something of a dream role!
"I can be attracted to that kind of storytelling. I'm from Sweden. I talk with my friends about this a lot, but in Sweden, we don't have this sort of heightened drama where you can play [a role like in] Parallel or Mr. Robot," Wallström explained. "We have this very down to Earth thing, and so it's rare in Sweden that we do sci-fi or horror movies because it's just not a natural way of storytelling."
"When you look at American or British plays, and you have such a long history [of these] at least in England, like Shakespeare, for instance, it's in your DNA. That's very appealing to me because sometimes as an actor it's nice to take a big, big step away from yourself." As for his dream role, the actor added: "I've said this before that I'm a huge Spider-Man fan, but I'm 37 so unless they reboot that with a middle-aged Spider-Man, I think I'm...it's a closed story there."
Wallström would make a great older Peter Parker (it's not hard to imagine him teaching high school science, for example), but it doesn't look like that's on the cards. However, when we suggested he could tackle a Spider-Man villain instead, he responded: "That's right. I'll have to put my hope to that!"
Norman Osborn, anyone?
