Sam Raimi Reiterates That He "Messed Up" SPIDER-MAN 3; Says He's Available If Marvel Needs Him

Sam Raimi created two action-packed Spider-Man films, but when it came to the third one, it was a film that just didn't work very well. In a new interview with The Week, Raimi dishes on that film, and shared his thoughts on the newest Spider-Man. Hit the jump to check it out!

In a recent interview with The Week, director Sam Raimi spoke on "Spider-Man 3", and admitted that, that's a film he messed up on. "I messed up on the third one." He then added, and explained how he would be willing to work with Marvel again, if they needed him "I think they're so complete now, Marvel. They probably don't need me anymore. But if they needed me? I'd love to. It's great to be wanted."

This isn't the first time Raimi has spoken this way regarding "Spider-Man 3", in an interview with Nerdist early this year, he also shared his thoughts on how the movie was "a movie that just didn’t work very well," and that he "didn’t really believe in all the characters" that appeared in the film. Even though he's admitted this, I'm sure he'd love another crack at a Spider-Man film!

When asked about the new incarnations of Spider-Man (Amazing Spider-Man and Tom Holland's Spider-man), Raimi says he hasn't really stayed on top of them, despite seeing both "Amazing Spider-Man" films. "I'm not really on top of it. I know they made two [Amazing Spider-Man] features, and obviously, I've seen those." Sam Raimi has said in the past that he loved Marc Webb's Spider-man films, and probably from this he'll keep up with Marvel's newest Spider-Man that will appear in Captain America: Civil War!

Would you like to Sam Raimi tackle another superhero film? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

Honestly given how all the non-Marvel Studio projects Feige worked on, the one he was closet to was the Raimi Spider-Man films. I wouldn't mind Raimi has sort of a counselor.

I still love Raimi for Spidey 3. He didn't want to use Venom because he saw that Venom was nothing but style over substance so if Avi wanted Venom, Raimi was gonna give him Venom by turning Venom into a joke along with the black suit.

I mean look at the casting for the villains in the Raimi series. Dafoe, Church, and Molina were all spot on castings for Green Goblin, Sandman, and Doc Ock. But when it comes to Venom, Raimi changed it a bit (which I understand. He wanted Eddie to be a dark reflection of Peter). Then he changed the black suit design and had it when Peter wore the black suit he would be all emoish.

He made a mockery out of a shitty character as a middle finger to Avi and I loved it.

This i think is one of the first instances of Studio Interference in the new age. Previously it had died down after it [frick]ed up Batman and Robin, but the then new-found success of Spider-man got studios cocky again.

This is less so studio interference like we've seen in the Amazing films and more like them having the director use a certain character and the director throwing a hissy fit.

I love Raimi but how he handled the whole situation makes him the child in this instance.

It's not like he's not prone to bad ideas either, remember back when Spider-Man 4 was a thing he wanted to do the Vulturess? Bleh.

Hmm, I'm not really sure what I would want to see Sam direct within the MCU. I don't want him to go back to Spider-Man (though it would still be fantastic)

Marvel needs to contact him and get him to help out with the movie! I still don't trust those writers Marvel hired.

X-Men 3, X-Men 2 (Singer actually wanted Sentinels but Fox was like "GIANT ROBOTS? THAT'S [frick]ING STUPID"), the Tim Story Fantastic Four films & Daredevil.

@JamesMann

He only did "Vulturess" because he originally wanted Black Cat and Vulture and Sony felt Black Cat was too similar to Catwoman and wouldn't let Raimi use her so Raimi came out with "Vulturess" as sort of being able to use Black Cat without using Black Cat.

I blame Sony more than Raimi. Guy knows Spider-Man and considering how praised Spider-Man 2 was, just let him make whatever he wants. Sir Ben Kinsley actually signed on to play Vulture in Spider-Man 3. Kingsley could have actually played a real supervillain.

@JamesMann

Yupp, Anne Hathaway was supposed to play the daughter of the Vulture and was going to be the Vultress, while Bruce Campbell was said to have a bigger role and the guy who played Uncle Ben's murder in the original films was also going to have a secret role as well.

Uh hmm why don't people want him back on Spidey? Spiderman 1 was a great start. Spiderman 2 has so far been the best one ever made. And Spiderman 3 is pretty good up until the black suit appears (Which Raimi didn't even wanna do). I don't see the problem guys...

@DeusExSponge

I don't trust the writers either. I don't know why they just didn't get the guys who worked on The Spectacular Spider-Man. With a few live action tweaks they would've been perfect for the job.

@XelCorp

I wouldn't want Raimi to direct or write. He's done his Spidey films. Unless we get a Shattered Dimensions type film in which we could have Tobey's Spider-Man, he should direct or write. I rather have Raimi take more of a Tarantino in Sin City 1 and be a producer and counselor to the film.

@XelCorp

I personally think Sam returning to do Spider-Man movies would be fantastic. His imagery surrounding the villains was pretty cool, (Sandman, Doc Ock, even how he played out the Symbiote) but eh, I don't know a part of me feels worried about the script he would be given despite him having fantastic directorial skills. Anything is possible though. Anytime you have someone like Ridley Scott still doing Alien movies I don't see why Sam couldn't return to the Spider-Man universe.
DeusExSponge
DeusExSponge - 10/29/2015, 7:51 AM
TheRationalNerd - Exactly! Marvel basically got their golden boy back and they hire these writers?! Now I'll give Marvel the benefit of the doubt, but I'm going to remain skeptical about this. Also this is one of those instances where I wouldn't mind some actual studio interference.
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 10/29/2015, 7:53 AM
@TheRationalNerd

They should have a Shattered Dimensions film and have like Watts directing all scenes with MCU Spidey, Raimi directing all scenes with Tobey Spidey, Webb (yea let's just let him back) directing all scenes with Garfield Spidey, and then get a new director to handle 2099 Spidey.

Hell maybe like in the game have Tobey Spidey regain the black suit since he's the only one whose had it and to make him seem different.

4 directors collaborating on one film would big [frick]ing epic.
DeusExSponge
DeusExSponge - 10/29/2015, 7:57 AM
LEVITIKUZ - Having 4 directors collaborating on one movie is bit much no? Though the idea sounds great, it could potentially hurt the movie and would turn out to be a classic case of having too much cooks in the kitchen. Wouldn't want another clusterf*ck like Green Lantern.

I don't get it, why was everyone so quick to abandon ship after one bad movie after two very successful, very strong films being released prior to? But at the same time, people talk about how Iron Man is amazing when he's only had one solid film. His first film was great, his second was "meh", and the third, well, the third gave us this:

So how come we can forgive and even justify that terrible turn of events, but we never gave Spider-Man a chance to redeem himself?

*sighs* nevermind...

As mediocre as Spider-Man 3 was it was still far far superior to TASM 1/2.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 10/29/2015, 8:13 AM
@LEVITIKUZ

I've been saying that the entire time!!!!!! :D The sony properties still exist seeing that they're basically teaming up with Marvel Studios, if they did a film like that not only would it tie in all of those films into the bigger picture but it would also (sort of) excuse some of the horrific outcomes of those franchises as well. Needless to say it would make MAJOR bank!!!!

@DeusExSponge

I think you could keep those individual directors for different "looks" from other franchises you know? Just allow them to direct their own individual pieces focusing on the characters before the entire shared universe scenario starts.

Spiderman 3 is FARRRRRRRRRRRRR from being a terrible film. It has some awesome moments in it.

I would totally give him another chance to direct a Spiderman movie. I loved Spiderman 2... Still the best Spiderman film yet.
