Sony Paying Andrew Garfield $500,000 For Spider-Man Reboot

Sony Paying Andrew Garfield $500,000 For Spider-Man Reboot

Deadline is reporting that Sony will pay Garfield an estimated $500,000 to take over the role of Peter Parker in Marc Webb's upcoming reboot of the franchise.

Sure that ain't chicken feed to the average Joe. But in the worlds of big budget Hollywood blockbusters, it's really not a lot, especially when you consider how much Tobey Maguire made from his three portrayals of Parker. But then of course, we always knew Sony were going to bring this one in at a much lower budget. I suppose it's not that surprising.

Tobey Maguire was paid $4 million for the first film. It has been reported that he was paid $17.5 million plus 5% back-end for "Spider-Man 2," and $15 million plus 7.5% back-end for "Spider-Man 3." And he was supposedly offered $20 million plus a small percentage of backend for "Spider-Man 4" which of course was scrapped in favor of this reboot. According to Deadline:

..I'm told Garfield's pay scale on the film is around $500,000 salary on the first film, $1 million for the second one, and $2 million for the third film. All of the finalists were presented with those terms in a deal for one film and two options.]

Director Marc Webb had a lot of critical and commercial success with his debut feature 500 Days Of Summer, although he still wouldn't have been considered a big time player by any means. And of course Garfield is a relative unknown. Appearing in mainly indie fare like Boy A, the Red Riding series, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus etc. But gaining huge praise and plaudits for his work. So it seems like Sony has managed to nab some big time talent for hardly any cash at all. I think that might be a good thing. Obviously a film like Spider-man needs special effects, but without millions upon millions to splurge, sometimes a movie will focus on story and character more than it might have before--which is never a bad thing. I'm still not in favor of this reboot, but if they can make it the best they can, I'll certainly give it a chance!

But despite rumors(and hopes) that with the casting of the 26 year old Garfield, the movie would change its proposed high school setting for either college, or even have the story take place around the same time period that the third Raimi movie ended(sort of requel style a la The Incredible Hulk) it seems as if it's still going to go the Spidey 90210 route.

The film will begin shooting by year's end for a July 3, 2012 release date from a script by Jamie Vanderbilt.

im worried about this movie because of the writer. James Vanderbilt. He wrote THE LOSERS and that movie had a really bad story and some of the worst dialogues ive seen in the last few years. yes he did do the screenplay for zodiac but that was based on a novel.

Man Tobey got paid way more for the first movie, then he got a big payday afterwards, but man talk about lowballing someone on this, they really are caring more about the sappy aspect of this than they should

Damn, I know that's probably more than he's ever been paid before but what a measly sum! (especially when he gets home and converts it into £££'s, lol!) I'm looking forward to when we actually hear Garfield talk about taking the role...is he a fan of Spider-Man I wonder?

I really like the direction this reboot is going.

1) like Ror said, smaller budget may equal more focus on the story

2) Unknown actor that can act is a +, he has great opportunity to OWN this role.

3) I'm a big fan of Ultimate/Spectacular Spider-Man AND if they do as Ror suggested and reboot like The Incredible Hulk and pick up where Raimi left off we might get to see the Lizard. Finally.

@TankGirl were are you from?

Time, as always, will reveal all.

I think the Lizard would be a great first villain because his motives will be close to Peter and they wont be blowing their deepest story lines right off the bat. It would be cool if both Eddie Brock (not Jr.) and Norman Osbourn are in the first one as semi important characters too, it'll change up the whole notion of these crazy bad guys just coming out of no where, and they wont have to make up rediculous excuses to connect these guys to Peter's past.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 7/5/2010, 10:40 AM
The Budget will still be in the $150M range, it just wont push $300M like the last one did, largely because of the cast.

@Anil, you're right, 3 was total shit, but i was thinking with how successful TIH was in doing it, maybe the same would be true for Spidey and the reboot haters and the Spec/Ult fans would be happy. That's one of the reasons TIH worked was cause it gave the TV fans something to be happy about without throwing the original under the bus.

I also think Sony, from a business POV is smart, they know that Spidey is a guaranteed winner. All the fan boys are gonna show up and see (hopefully) a well told story with great talent on a MUCH smaller budget, they just increased their profit margin incredibly

I'm wondering if they'll use some of the $ they're not paying Garfield and surround him with not only great special effects, but quality actors as well in the supporting cast.

I say Jason Isaacs for Norman Osbourne. This guy just oozes that character for me. Defoe was good in the 1st Spidey movie (not as GG mind you), but almost too recognizable a face to be the role, imo. I can't remember who said it, JoshW. maybe, but I could totally see Helen Mirren as May.

While they're at it, change the eyes on the mask. They are too triangular and big. I think they should look more like they do in any Alex Ross Spider-Man art.

Sony will be smart too if they include as many characters from the books even in minor roles, just like Spectacular SM did.

Good article ROR!

If memory serves me right after the success of Spider-Man 1, Tobey renegotiated his contract for more money. If they do Spider-Man 1 type money again with the reboot I bet this guy will redo his contract. Who knows, hope for the best.

PoPcornDude: Wow, are you really complaining about that? Who gives a
shit if Garfield's British? As long as he puts on a convincing American accent, why should it matter? People find the most stupid reasons to bash the reboot.
fanboiii
fanboiii - 7/5/2010, 11:48 AM
@Destroyer14 It depends on when they get the Venom spin-off out. I would like to see an Eddie Brock cameo right before the Venom movie comes out. After the Venom movie, they could have a Spider-man and Venom movie. Then, Spider-man and Venom could split up into their own separate movies so they'd be like side by side stories. It's too soon though. They should start off with the Lizard and then show Dr. Connor studying the symbiote. They could even write it so Dr. Connor mixes the DNA of the symbiote with reptile DNA to regenerate his arm and mutate into the Lizard.

Less than half the budget of the previous three films. A cast of unknowns. A reboot sending the gang back to high school for possibly another origin story...

Looks like Sony has as much faith in this reboot as most of us do. But the good news is, if it bombs the way I think it might, Sony will have to scrap any plans for a sequel, and in a few years, Spiderman will return to Marvel/Disney, where it belongs!

Reason why Spider-Man Should Fail

1. An Unknown Actor who looks like an Idiot

2. Two Producers who are not only Senile but have Ruined alot of Marvel Movies (Avi Arad Especially he needs to be removed from the production and any other Marvel Adaptations)

3. The Directors only done ONE film and a list Of Completely stupid music videos

4. Its a REBOOT have we not forgot about PUNISHER war Zone and While the Incredible Hulk was a A Great Film with Norton we have Not yet Seen a Sequel or had any talks about him being in the Avengers

5. Personally i

5. Personally I believe Sam Raimi Could have redeemed himself If given a Chance to do Spiderman 4

6. Have you seen how low there going with the budget? This means less Spider-man and More wasted time

7. The pass of this film already seems rushed enough so the CGI will probably be rushed as well giving us a horrible view of Spiderman

8. SONY owns the rights to Spiderman, If Marvel Owned them we would have an awsome Spiderman and Possibly a cameo roll in the Avengers

9. The Marvel universe on Film Is never going to get any better if Different studios own the rights to these films, I want a film where all the characters have heard of each other this X-Men not knowing anything about the punisher, thor, the hulk, daredevil its all becoming ridiculous Only one studio should hold the rights to all the Marvel properties PERIOD

10. If its not Broke don't Fix it.
